Allen Concedes — Senate Officially Democratic

Today, George Allen gracefully conceded to Democratic challenger Jim Webb, marking the official beginning of a Democratic Senate Majority.? The United States has lost a great leader and congressman, and we will all be saddened by Sen. Allen’s absence from Capitol Hill.??But, at least now that the 2006 elections are finally over, we can regroup and move forward, humbled, but more wise, focused, and motivated than ever.

Looks like McCain is back on suicide watch.

Is it coincidental that the two incumbent Republican U.S. Senators who made multiple racially insensitive remakrs – Senator Allen and Senator Burns – lost? Somehow I doubt it.

Burns, as Robert Novak has opined, should have been convinced to retire and then recruited over. Allen has always been overrated in my view, as I think his campaign performance in 2006 showed. The GOP did a horrible job of campaign recruitment on both the House and Senate sides in 2006. Senator John Ensign will run the NRSC in 2008, and let’s see who runs the NRCC in 2008.

If anything, I think Senator Allen has been underrated. I think we underestimated just how valuable he was as a charismatic and motivating leader in the Senate, and I think we underappreciated the integrity and hard work he brought to D.C. working for real conservative values. Granted, he melted when the national spotlight hit him after he hinted he wanted to run for President, but as a Senator from Virginia–not a presidential candidate–he was invaluable, and I’m really disappointed Virginians didn’t re-elect him. But, as Allen himself said, the Bible tells us that there’s a time and a season for everything, and that nothing happens without a purpose. Allen will go on to do good things, I’m sure. I hope Jim Webb retains that moderate flair that got him into the Senate in the first place and that he works with the Republicans to accomplish many positive things.

We disagree. I found Allen unimaginative, not charismatic; his football analogies were trite and stale. As for being a hard worker, he didn’t get much passed in the Senate and was accused of stealing someone else’s amendment during the campaign season. Then he ran an absolutely abysmal campaign. I don’t see how you conclude anything other than overrated.

It may also not be coincidental that the two Republican U.S. Senators who were thinking of running for president – Allen and Santorum – lost. You had better not get too far out in front of things in politics unless you are a Hillary Clinton lock to win re-election. Arrogance definitely hurt Republicans this election cycle.

I do agree with you on the getting ahead of one’s self bit. Had Allen abstained from any one of those tiny little mistakes, whether it be the Macaca Incident, the Durbin Amendment stealing, (especially) the trying to run for President too early, or had he even done something to prevent those scuffles between his supporters and that liberal blogger during the last days of the campaign (or at least offered an apology to the blogger on behalf of his campaign), he could very well have pulled over the finish line. Funny how monumental each of those little mistakes turned out to be in retrospect.

But, while I respect Rick Santorum, I never really saw him as much of a presidential candidate in my opinion.

Also, I think it’s sensible to now make the tough decision to remove Allen from the power rankings.  I just don’t see a presidential campaign in 2008 after what has occurred.

FWIW, I found Geoge Allen to have all of the charisma of a drunken uncle on Thanksgiving afternoon.
