McCain, Giuliani To Speak at Major NY Fundraiser in May

Well, this is certainly quite interesting:

The New York GOP chairman has lined up Arizona Sen. John McCain to star at a major party fund-raiser alongside presidential-primary rival Rudy Giuliani, a move some see as a diss of the former mayor in his home state.

Some political watchers and supporters of Giuliani, who sits with McCain atop most polls of Republicans, saw it as a strange move, since it gives McCain a platform and forces Giuliani to share the spotlight with his main primary challenger on his home turf.

“It’s a slight,” said one Giuliani supporter, who noted that the former mayor’s ties to the state party are not historically deep.

State Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello insisted that he wasn’ trying to slight anyone by inviting McCain and other GOP hopefuls to the May gala at the Sheraton New York hotel.

“The state committee is broke, we have no money, and we need an infusion of some finances into our coffers,” said Mondello, who has yet to make an endorsement.

He added that he also invited Mitt Romney, Mayor Bloomberg and former Gov. George Pataki.

I wish the Post article had said when in May the fundraiser was supposed to be held (anyone here know?), because the first Republican Presidential debates are scheduled for May 15th April 4th, in New Hampshire. This could make for some entertaining fireworks either way.

The first debate will be held April 4 in New Hampshire, so the candidates will have already appeared with each other at least once before this event.

It is interesting, though, that the state GOP party thought Rudy couldn’t bring enough money in on his own in his own state, and had to invite McCain and Romney, his two main rivals, as well.

Also, isn’t it pretty tacky and poor business strategy for the state Chairman to announce the party is “broke” and “we have no money”? Sheez, the GOP in NY is in a sorry state these days…

Wow, this should be very interesting.

I wonder if there will be any video of this on YouTube.

    LOL

    HeavyM,

Thanks for the correction. I fixed it now.
