Remember how I’ve always said that once Rudy and McCain had both entered the race that the rest of the field would be fighting for scraps from the MSM? Well, this is the second poll by a major news organization within the past week that doesn’t bother to include another candidate besides Rudy or Sen. McCain.
The narrative has already been written my friends… It will be Rudy vs. McCain in the MSM from now on:
CBS News Poll, “MCCAIN, GIULIANI AND THE 2008 REPUBLICAN NOMINATION“, taken Feb. 8th-11th 2007 (Republican Primary voters):
- Rudy Giuliani 50%
- John McCain 21%
- Neither 13%
Favorable-Not Favorable-Undecided-Don’t Know Enough Yet
- Rudy Giuliani 41%-18%-25%-16%
- John McCain 31%-20%-28%-21%
Patrick Ruffini notes the similarities between Dubya’s jump in the polls in 2000 after he had declared as a candidate to Rudy’s.

Poll Alert: CBS News Republican Primary…

Here’s the full results of the poll, Kavon: http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/feb07a-reps08.pdf
Funny enough, 67% of Republicans already identify Giuliani as moderate or liberal, and still Giuliani gets over half of the Republican vote. I think that kind of discredits the “Wait until voters get to know him better!” line.

Yeah… I didn’t want to link to it because some people get teed off when you link to a pdf. So everyone is now duly warned!

Hmm, well, I guess now that it’s down to Giuliani and McCain being spoon fed to me I’ll just get in line. :p

murphy,
I think that was hardly the point Kavon was trying to make. He was just commenting on the fact that voters shouldn’t expect to get MSM coverage of Republican candidates besides Giuliani and McCain in the coming election season.

I think it will be Rudy vs. McCain until the 1Q fundraising numbers come out. When Romney has a much better than anticipated showing, it will force people to sit up and take notice. Especially if he comes in ahead of everyone else, which he’s got a great shot of doing. The only candidate that may raise more than him would be Giuliani, and he got such a late jump on the campaign the 1Q numbers should be all Mitt.

Oh I know Woody. I was just facetiously representing Mr. Joe American watching the evening news on who’s running in 2008.

HeavyM,
I’d be very, very surprised if McCain isn’t either the number one fundraiser or at least second come the March 31st FEC filling. Given Giuliani’s late start and the initial trepidation among donors (as you mention), the best he could hope for is a close third.
McCain’s planning a massive fundraiser on March 2nd in Phoenix.

I was talking with the McCain regional director yesterday, and he is definitely pitching this line:
“Wait until voters get to know him better”
I think the McCain campaign is in panic mode now. They really thought Rudy’s poll numbers would tank by now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see things start to get really dirty.
I believe the MSM will also take this approach, because they fear Rudy more than McCain. But it will become increasingly difficult to do so, as time go goes on and Rudy’s polls numbers continue to stay high.
If the choice comes down to McCain and Rudy, I think Rudy will win decisively.

All I know is that if McCain keeps showing up at events with the left side of his face looking like it did the other day, he’ll be in trouble.
I know it might be a reaction to medication or what have you. But television is still the number one medium in politics as well as just visuals at events, and if everyone starts getting an image of McCain that includes huge purple splotches on his face, hat can’t be good for him.

Did anyone catch the temperament poll?
Has the right temperament to be president:
GIULIANI 76%
MCCAIN 59%
This could be a big problem for McCain.
