The Prowler over at The American Spectator reports in today’s on-line edition that some folks in conservative circles are pining for former United States Senator Fred Thompson to get in the 2008 presidential race. Many conservatives are just not happy with the current Republican field of presidential candidates, which could bode well for Senator Thompson, Speaker Newt Gingrich, or Governor Jeb Bush if they jump into the fray later this year. It seems as if one from that group is likely to make the contest eventually.

Fred Thompson is probably a candidate I would forsake supporting Giuliani for. Romney used to be that guy until his flops became too much to handle (for all the people with Romney man-crushes do not feel the need to accost me for this legitimate personal opinion). Thompson would certainly run a great campaign, he is very telegenic, and is a solid conservative who seems to be an incredibly able person.

I second that - - but I still prefer Rudy. Thank you Bullmoose, for standing up (rather eloquently) to the Romney folks on this site, who can be rather vicious (for some reason… fear maybe? ) LOL

Kt,
No good campaign could operate with out a good dose of honest fear of loosing. It’s what makes you work hard, and it means you care about your candidate and you’re own ideals.

Projecting again, are we, KT?

MARK:
First of all, I respect other opinions and I am never nasty or vicious, therefore I am not projecting. In fact, I tend to hold back on this blog. Sometimes I wonder if some of you guys are not more like those controlling, politically-correct liberal democrats. Seems you can’t say ANYTHING that isn’t PRO-ROMNEY without big-time offending someone. I reiterate that I think Romney is a phonybaloney, period. With a rating of only 4% in the polls, seems to me that most Americans agree.

The only rationales to support a Romney candidacy (as far as I can tell) are:
1) He’s charismatic and ‘pretty’ (like Edwards or Bill Clinton)
2) He’s being the most obsequious in his pandering to the right wing
3) He has moderate credentials as an effective blue state GOP Governor.
I think 2 & 3 mostly cancel out. Perhaps with an 8 month general election voters won’t get fatigued by November 4 with a pretty candidate. Otherwise I don’t see why he gets a ticket into the top tier.

KT,
Perhaps I am confusing you with another two inital poster here who does get rather vicious. I shall be more careful in the future.

EGS:
2) He’s being the most obsequious in his pandering to the right wing.
Question: What is the difference between ‘obsequious’ and ‘attentive’? Answer, you don’t like the guy being ‘obsequious’, but you do like the guy being ‘attentive’.
Question: What is the difference between ‘pandering’ and ‘agreeing’? Answer: you don’t like the ‘pandering’ guy, but you do like the ‘agreeing’ guy.
3) He has moderate credentials as an effective blue state GOP Governor.
I’m curious. What standards do you set for ‘poor’, ‘moderate’, ‘good’, and ‘exceptional’? Can you give examples? Is it once again the case that you don’t like the ‘moderately’ credentialled candidate, but you do like the ‘excellent’ credentialled candidate?

I meant moderate as opposed to conservative. He was billed as a governor who can get Democratic votes. Also differing between obsequiousness/attentive and agreeing/pandering is the element of sincerity. Your mileage may vary.

marK,
I wonder to whom you may be referring…?

Thanks for clarifying.

econ grad student,
For me, one of the biggest rationales for supporting Romney boils down to proven leadership.
In terms of competent executive experience, the only other comparable major candidate in either party is Giuliani.

Fred Thompson, Please, please, please run. You are the only decent person to represent
the Republicans and our Nation.
