  1. TM Says:

This makes it very clear, McCain is dropping like a rock.

    Only Rudy can defeat Hillary.

  2. TM Says:

    One more point.

The last time this poll was done, Hillary was beating everyone.

Rudy is the only candidate that has actually gained some ground on Hillary.

  3. Nusrat Says:

Soon, Kavon, should you maybe update the top three to be

    1. Rudy
    2. Romney
    3. McCain?

    then maybe

    4. Brownback
    5. Huckabee
    6. Gingrich
    ?

  4. Peter Says:

I agree. Newt doesn’t deserve #4 and Huckabee should be fifth at least.

    Rudy
    McCain
    Romney
    Huckabee/Brownback/Hunter?
    Thompson/Tancredo/Paul?

And please take Chuck Hagel and Condi off!

  5. Peter Says:

    Oh yeah, and Pataki.

  6. TM Says:

I agree, this would be a good time to update the rankings.

The latest Fox News Poll would be a good start.

    Rudy Giuliani 39%
    John McCain 19%
    Newt Gingrich 7%
    Mitt Romney 6%
    Mike Huckabee 4%
    Duncan Hunter 2%
    Sam Brownback 2%

  7. BarkTwiggs Says:

I would consider McCain and Romney closer to being a 2nd place tie than put Romney solely in 2nd place at this juncture. This coming from a Romney supporter none the less. Romney currently has the edge in momentum, endorsements, fund-raising, and even organization. Until McCain consistantly polls less than Romney does nationally, it would be premature to rank McCain as third. I think it’s going to happen, it’s only a matter of when. Come March 31st and the debates, there’s going to be movement.

As for Newt, I say we put his ranking in cryogenic storage until September (if he actually announces). Personally, I’ll take Huckabee over Brownback anyday. It’s not that Sam Brownback doesn’t have the conservative cred, I personally feel that Huckabee would do much better in a race with a Clinton opposing. He can point to his record on Arkansas as improving the mess the Clinton’s left behind. Brownback only has stances and legislation to go against someone which isn’t enough in my book.

  8. LJ Says:

    TM,

How exactly is McCain dropping like a rock? He got 34% against Rudy, which, if you paid attention, is on the high end of his national poll numbers. In fact, his numbers are remarkably stable, despite Rudy’s surge.

    Nusrat,

How can you justify putting Romney above McCain? Romney’s the one whose poll numbers are dropping. He’s back at 6% in the polls when he was at 10% last week. I thought his numbers were supposed to go up as people got to know him?

  9. TM Says:

I have to agree with LJ on the Rankings. Although, McCain has lost a significant amount of momentum, he still consistently polls ahead of Romney.

Not sure about Newt. Newt is very popular with the base, and has been polling ahead of Romney.

    Maybe This:

    Rudy Giuliani
    John McCain
Newt Gingrich/Mitt Romney Third Place Tie?

  10. JayPe Says:

If one throws in the latest CPAP gathering, Brownback still probably deserves a slot above Huckabee. He has more organisation in place too. Romney is still being ranked on potential.

Perhaps wait for the first quarter fundraising results to come in before changing the rankings. That will give a good hint as to what the lower order should be.

Up top, Rudy is clearly first (electability over quality, is he the next John Kerry).
McCain is still polling well enough, and has enough of the establishment behind him to deserve 2nd place. Romney is light years ahead of 4th (organisation, fundraising, ability).

I’d put Brownback then Huckabee as 4 and 5. Gingrich 6th for his potential to enter the race. (He’d still be more likely at this stage than Thompson or Tancredo).

We can drop Pataki, Hagel, and Rice. But Gilmore should probably be added, perhaps as #7? (He did score over 30% in a recent Iowa poll ;)

  11. TM Says:

    JayPe,

I think Romney is more like John Kerry.

    AKA:

    Flipper

  12. KT Says:

    TM,

I am sprry but I have to disagree with you. Romney is in now way, shape or form, a Flipper. He is a Flopper.

  13. KT Says:

    TM,

I am sorry but I have to disagree with you. Romney is in no way, shape or form, a Flipper. He is a Flopper.

  14. TM Says:

    Good one KT!

The Candidates
