Steve Forbes, former Republican presidential candidate, President and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes, and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine has endorsed Rudy Giuliani for President of the United States. Mr. Forbes will serve as a National Campaign Co-Chair and Senior Policy Advisor:
“I am honored to support Rudy Giuliani for President,” Steve Forbes said. “As Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani showed how exercising fiscal discipline including tax cuts lowers deficits, spurs economic growth, and increases revenue. It is time the rest of the country benefit from a true fiscal conservative leader who gets real results.”
“Steve and I share an economic vision that embraces supply-side economics, tax relief, and spending restraint,” said Mayor Giuliani. “I look forward to working with Steve and am proud to have him as a member of our team.”
Nice addition, as those of us who value economic liberty certainly look to Mr. Forbes as a leader on that front.
Update: Soren provides the following analysis:
This is a big deal, and Ryan Sager has it.. Rudy Giuliani was endrosed by Steve Forbes today. Forbes ran in 2000 and performed well, 30%, in Iowa, and so-so in New Hampshire. But what Forbes has is a network and lists. One of my persistent criticisms of the Giuliani campaign has been that there has not been an in-state organization. Signing Forbes helps a huge amount.
For example, when I was in New Hampshire last weekend, Matt Lewis and I interviewed State Rep. Stephanie Eaton who had not decided between Rudy Giuliani and John McCain. But she endorsed Steve Forbes in 2000. I bet that this is swinging her to Giuliani.
Good job team Rudy.
Soren also has a wrap-up of this morning’s McCain conference call.

Fantastic! Rudy may be behind on endorsements, but this is a big one, like Ted Olson.

WOW!!! Is this the endorsement that was going to take place at the NASDAQ this morning???

This definitely seals the deal on the economic conservative front.
Great job Rudy!

This is great news for Hizzoner but part of me was kind of hoping that after seeing Senator Fred Thompson and Speaker Gingrich flirt with entry that Steve Forbes might have considered taking the plunge. His unifying message of fiscal and social conservatism resonated and may have proven successful in 08.

JA Pruce: Steve Forbes ran in 1996 as a pro-choicer, excoriating pro-life extremists. Then he flipped before 2000 and many bought into it.

What makes this very important, it that Forbes will be actively working on the campaign. With his exposure on Fox and in his Magazine, this is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

Ummmm, I think someone is just a weeeeeee bit out of the loop here. If one of your big issues is supply-side economics/fiscal conservatism (probably the most agreed on, ubiquitous, undisputed aspect of the GOP’s platform, even more the foreign policy and social issues, arguably), then you have to admit this is a quite a coup.
I have been dismissive of the import of endorsements per se, just for the sake of racking ‘em up like notches on a headboard (Romney has his endorsements, Rudy has his wives…lol), and I still don’t think they ultimately amount to much on their own, except as a reflection of the current CW. (An aside: CW is always a bit behind the curve; it may only be now that Rudy’s strength as a candidate is sinking in, and not any great effort on the part of Rudy’s team specifically to “bag” some quality endorsements at this specific time.)
But, it has been heartening to see the quality of Rudy’s endorsements when he does land them, as opposed being focused on quantity to the point of obsession. Also, not only are they some seriously big hitters, but they’re big hitters whose influence in their respective fortes are singular. I mean, Ted Olson on judicial philosophy? Forbes now on economics? That carries some serious weight.
Aside from the war (moot for the GOP primaries, all the GOP candidates are strong here), the only area were Rudy doesn’t have an influential backer, and I doubt he will get one, is in the social issues arena. Still, when you toss out the war, and consider that social issues, judges, and economy are probably the biggest remaining issues for GOP voters, having the endorsements of two demigods in their respective, important-to-the-base fields, out of three — well, it ain’t bad. Ain’t bad at all.

Mitt Romney Is Not A Fan Of Forbes’ Flat Tax.
To add a little fuel to the fire…
In truth though, it was 1996. Think that, if ever it applied, the statute of limitations for flip-flopping charges does apply here. Also, while the flat tax isn’t exactly embraced, even by mainstream conservatives, it was really third-rail stuff in ‘96.

MJS, where’s the flip?

I just saw Forbes endorsing Rudy on Fox and Friends.
Great exposure for a national endorsement!
