Ever read The Brody File? You should. David Brody is covering the 2008 elections over at The Christian Broadcast Network, Pat Roberts home. No one can humorously frame a story like Brody. Here are some personal favorites:
So pretend you’re a top level staffer to one of the top 2008 presidential candidates. You’re sitting in the war room this morning waiting for an intern to bring your Starbucks and jelly doughnuts into the room. You sit there and contemplate this question: Should my candidate go on the Don Imus radio show in the future? What do you do? Link
The Brody File is in constant research mode. For all you Fred Thompson fans out there, grab a seat. Pause your TIVO episodes of Law and Order. Put on hold those portraits you’ve ordered of Fred Thompson and Ronald Reagan side by side in your living room…. Link
For House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, first it was a visit to Syria. Now she’s thinking about Iran. What’s after that? A townhall meeting with members of al-Qaeda? I’m concerned the Speaker will run out of headscarves. Link
David has had the opportunity to interview McCain and Romney. He was supposed to interview Giuliani today if it wasn’t for the tragedy at Virginia Tech. I asked David this last week to participate in an email interview and without further ado…
1. Where are you from? What’s your background, family and work?
I was born in New Jersey but raised in New York City on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I went to Ithaca College and graduated with a degree in Communications in 1987. I was News Director at KRDO-TV (ABC Affiliate), Newscast producer at KUSA-TV (NBC-affiliate), Executive Sports Producer at WUSA-TV (CBS Affiliate). I am married with three children ages 15,13 and 4.2. How did you become a journalist. Why did you decide to work for CBN? how many years have you been in the business?
I’ve wanted to be in television since high school. I used to broadcast New York Mets Games in front of my TV with friends. I studied it in college and have had jobs in television my whole life. I have been in the TV business 20 years. I won an Emmy Award for producing the top newscast in market size 51-100 in 1989.I decided to work for CBN because the network gave me the opportunity to go in front of the camera to a nationwide audience. It’s a pretty rare opportunity.
3. What has living in DC and covering the game been like?
It’s a thrill everyday. To meet the movers and shakers of our time is pretty incredible. It’s great to have the access that I have. The 2008 candidates clearly know that CBN is a major player in the presidential race.4. On your blog what is the line between commentary and reporting?
It’s a challenge for me in every blog I write. I am a journalist first. Blogging to me is a free form of expression where I can be a little funny, let my personality come out a little bit and bring certain items up for discussion. I never come to a definitive conclusion about a topic on my blog. I usually leave it out there and let people comment. As a journalist, that’s really the bets way to do it.5. So far you have interviewed a few of the candidates and notables this presidential cycle, what stands out to you?
What stands out to me is that at least as far as McCain and Romney are concerned (since those are the two I have interviewed) they both are very real and genuine in terms of wanting to make America better. They are both very sincere and come across as competent and overall very nice.6. Is there a common perception you get from your readers concerning the current crop of candidates?
The Brody File readers are really all over the place in terms of their views. We get the hard core life and marriage voters; we get the the evangelicals who love Rudy, we get the Romney lovers and haters. It’s really a wide spectrum of ideas. The one common theme seems to be that the candidates better take religious conservatives very seriously.7. You work for an openly Christian news organization. Judging from your readers and your contacts, how real is Mitt Romney’s Mormon problem?
It’s an issue for sure but not something that he can’t overcome. There are those who truly say no way they won’t vote for Romney just because he’s Mormon. But there are an equal amount of other people who care that his values seem to match up with their values.
…Thanks David!

Jason, I know. I was kidding around with you, and could see you were teasing. I was just returning the favor, since we want to be “fair and Balanced.”
But in all seriousness, Brody is a great guy, and a good read.

I’m very impressed with David Brody. He is always looking for feedback on his interviews and blog posts. I especially appreciate the fact that he’s actually responded to a couple of the my email notes.
