Alaska and Colorado have moved up their caucuses from May 17 and April 15, respectively, and are now going to hold their caucuses on… you guessed it, February 5, 2008! This makes 20 states on that single day. In somewhat related news, Hawaii is now holding their caucuses on March 2 instead of June 6, so they’re leaping ahead more than three months and will still find they have no influence on the race.

Now 20 states have their caucuses on Feb 5th? Now my state Colorado is up for Feb 5th. Don’t know what to really think of all this.
It seems to me if these states really wanted a “greater infuence” on this process, they’d all be trying to one-up eachother by going first / earlier verses all at the same time Feb 20th.

The DNC and the RNC have threatened to reduce the number of delegates from any state which moves its primary or caucus too early (allowing exceptions for a few states such as Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina).
I believe February 5 is the first “open” Tuesday allowed for all states to use in 2008 without requiring an exception or being penalized in number of delegates. That’s why so many states have moved their primaries/caucuses to then.
