Breaking: Fred Thompson Addresses Pro Life Convention

In an exclusive video given to the Brody File, Former Senator Thompson addressed the National Right to Life Convention in Kansas City, via prerecorded video, as his schedule would not permit him to attend in person.? You can view the video here, or you can read the following transcript, courtesy of the Brody File:

“When I was in the Senate a lot of people would come to see me and it usually would have to do with business matters or financial matters or something pertaining to their financial welfare. When you came to see me, I always knew it was about something much more important than that, the most important thing of all in this World and that is life and I must say that those issues are even more profound to me as the years go by. Jeri and I have truly been blessed.

Let’s talk about some of those issues for a moment. In 1994, I made my first run for the U.S. Senate.?I was proud to receive the National Right to Life endorsement. I’ve been with you ever since. You’ve been with me ever since. On abortion related votes I’ve been 100 percent. We’ve had a lot of different kind of issues come up in the Senate from federal funding to stem cell research, Roe versus Wade and the partial birth abortion debate or as former Senator Pat Moynihan of New York used to say it’s more like infanticide than partial birth abortion. You know one of the proudest moments I’ve had as a private citizen was when the President asked me to help Judge John Roberts through the senate confirmation process to become a member of the Supreme Court. Well, now he is Chief Justice John Roberts, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but I think he’s going to go down as the best Chief Justice that this country has ever had.

On stem cell research, I’m for adult stem cell research not stem cell research where embryos of unborn children are destroyed. It looks to me like there is a lot of promising developments as far as adult stem cell research is concerned anyway and we don’t need to go down that other road.

Of course I am also concerned about these children after they’re born. I’m concerned about the cultural environment that they’re going to grow up in. I’m concerned about the fact that we’re bankrupting our entitlement program that’s going to saddle them with unbelievably high taxes when they’re going to try to start their families and buy that first home. I’m concerned most of all about their safety. We have an enemy in this World that would like nothing more than to kill thousands more innocent Americans; men, women, and children. I know you share those concerns, and I look forward to working together with you on them. Thank you so much for letting me be with you here for a few minutes today.”

Pitch perfect. Highlights accomplishments very well.

  4. David B Says:

A friend of mine who has a high level job in a pharmaceutical company says the idea that there is promising non-embryonic stem cell research is a big stinking pile of B.S.

My father voted Republican his entire life until he cast a vote for John Kerry in 2004 over stem cell research. He has Parkinson’s.

Doesn’t do well in a general election to run on the platform of sacrificing sick adults to clumps of cells.

  5. Lisa Snyder Says:

Fred Thompson IS the right man for job! He is a true social and fiscal conservative. I am
delighted to be supporting such a wonderful person.

  6. Dskinner Says:

Sorry David B, but your friend is wrong and probably because he is biased. Do you read medical journals? I didn’t think so. How about science magazines?

There are entire websites dedicated to proving you wrong. Here is an article from Nature magazine.

    http://www.nature.com/news/2007/070604/full/447618a.html

The reason people feel that way is because they don’t know the truth about the issue. The left is running a campaign for stem-cell research based on lies and misinformation just like they did with abortion.

I am for allowing private companies to do research with embryos from fertilization clinics, however there is no way the government should subsidize it. There are many other more proven, more successful types of stem cell research going on for the government to fund embryonic stem cell research.

  7. murphy Says:

Not only that, but recent research is producing embryonic stem cells from ordinary tissue.

DavidB, it looks like there’s no reason to run left with the stem cell issue. Unless, of course, you want to use taxpayer money to kill human life for the fun of it.

  8. Dskinner Says:

Murphy that article in Nature talks about creating cells just as pluripotent (can give rise to any type of cell, these are best to work with for research) as embryonic stem cells. I believe this is the “recent research” to which you are referring.

  9. murphy Says:

Right you are, Dskinner! That’s what I get for not reading the links!

  10. Dskinner Says:

I really like Thompson’s rhetoric now, I just want him to explain his rhetoric and candidate surveys from the 1990s.

Either way I would love all the judges that Thompson puts on the courts.

  11. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Dskinner,
I’m sure more is on the way when he feels ready to discuss it. Russert will probably ask him about it when he eventually does Meet the Press. The birth of his younger children obviously had an effect on him, where if he was somewhat pro choice to moderately pro life before, he is much more devoted to the issue of it now. He’ll never support a national amendment, because he would consider it an overreach and a breach of his federalist principles, but we could be sure he would do his best to send it back to the states.

  12. Nathan LaHue, Concord NH Says:

Fred Thompson is a neocon globalist not unlike McCain.

Although Fred Thompson is tougher than McCain and Giuliani on border enforcement, which isn’t saying much seeing how they line up with Barack Obama, he had a rather lackluster record on immigration while in the Senate. As one commentator notes: “Overall, Americans for Better Immigration gives [Thompson] a career grade of C; on chain migration, C; visa lottery, C-; reducing unnecessary visas, F; on reducing asylum fraud, C-; on reducing amnesties, D; and on interior enforcement, C+. Although he was tough on border control, he was lacking in almost every other area.”

Fred Thompson also supports affirmative action, and ideologically worships free trade, regardless how much it harms America. Historically, conservatives have opposed free trade, but Thompson, like others, has been “neoconned” into backing it.

He furthermore is a “fellow” at the American Enterprise Institute, one of the largest (and most sinister) neocon think-tanks, which demonstrates where his true loyalty lies. If you did not receive the Burkean memo, the transformation of the Middle East to liberal democracy is Jacobin, not conservative. There is not a single thing conservative about the membership of AEI. They are neocon / neoliberal globalists.

Why are neoncons backing Thompson? Ideally, being ex-Trotskyites themselves, neocons would prefer a liberal candidate, like McCain, Giuliani or Romney. But they see that conservatives deplore these candidates, and now are going to try to peddle Fred Thompson, who is just socially conservative enough and just tough enough on the borders, even if it is feigned, to woo naive GOP voters. But let’s hope this nefarious neocon plot fails.

Let’s pray that the more real conservatives learn about Fred Thompson, the more unacceptable he will appear. Use your BRAIN America, and not fall for sharply dressed, full set of ’sexy’ hair (Romney/Edwards), nor for someone who ‘Acts’ on TV.

A Dean of a College I know was touting a large RUDY sign. I asked him why Rudy, and he said, “Because he’s from MY state…I gotta support the home team!”. This guy has a MASTERS DEGREE and TEACHES! He has no friggin clue. I encourage all of you to not vote on ‘popularity’ but rather on who is the best candidate for the job. Fred Thompson will KEEP US IN IRAQ FOR A LONG LONG TIME according to his Fox News interview. Please research for yourselves America. It should make you puke if you truely knew who some of these people are.

  13. David B Says:

Wow, someone really got the Koolaid.

  14. Tommy Oliver Says:

One of our truthers for Paul.

  15. Dskinner Says:

Good thing this guy hasn’t found out about Thompson being a member of the CoFR.

  16. Sparky Says:

That’s the best format for Thompson. He’s actually much less impressive in person.

However, I think most people watching the video won’t be able to pay much attention if it’s their first time seeing how young Fred’s wife and kids are. My wife watched this and just said “That’s wrong!”

Maybe this is why Fred polls much better among men than women?

  17. JON Says:

What a shocker that he didn’t show up in person. he is so lazy it is hilarious. trust me, we have a lot more, ‘video show ups’ by fred to see in the future.

lazy fred. instead of showing up in person, he send s recorded tape. doe she ever leave that office of his inside the beltway? love they guy, but i am sooooooo tired of, i am going to run but not yet. seriously, i don’t know how the fred supporters can get excited over him. he can’t win a general anway, but he may make a good vp candidate? NOt much substance but lots of media appeal.

  18. Tommy Oliver Says:

Jon, That was taped earlier in the week. He was out of the country.

  19. murphy Says:

    Tommy,

Citing a scheduling conflict sounds a lot more legit when you send a recording of your comments. Atleast Fred made a little bit of effort.

Contrast that with J-Mac’s “schedule conflict”. No recording. Real clear message, all the same.

Can anyone point me toward links where Sen. Thompson has discussed his position on stem cell research? So far I’ve only found this speech. thanks,
