Just in case you were still wondering — an official e-mail update from the Tommy Thompson campaign as reported by Jonathan Martin:
“Tommy Thompson has made it clear that if he doesn’t finish first or second this week in Ames, Iowa, at the straw poll, he will not go on in this race.”
Got it?

Sounds like he is begging for people not to vote for him.

Funny. Sounds like he’s drumming up some advance enthusiasm for his departure.
Kinda feel bad for Tommy, though. Liked him when I lived in Wisconsin and he was governor, what with ramming some school choice through and all.
Too bad he shares the rhetorical flair and eloquence of both George Bushes…

I’m beginning to suspect there’s something “funny” at work here. Thompson has been entirely more forthright about his expectations, then any sense of logic would suggest. What does he possibly have to gain by setting unrealistically high expectation? It’s not as though he can trick caucus-goers into believing he’s really the front-runner. The only plausible reason Thompson would say these sort of things is if he actually believed them. Is it possible that there’s some sort of “funnel votes to Thompson” campaign occurring within the Rudy and McCain camps? If not, Thompson ought to be disqualified for the presidency merely on the grounds of repeatedly making the same needlessly idiotic comments.

Well, that’s neat.
And that’s all I’ve got to say about that.
As for Tommy, though, he’s my official #2 pick for President because it would be funny to have his hearing aid mess up at some international press conference.

I wonder why Tommy Thompson is showing us what his decision is before he actually makes it. Sure, it’s nice to know what’s in the future, but I think it hurts him.
