WELL, WELL, WELL… Romney Camp- busted!!!

From the Washington Post:

A top adviser to former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney appears to be behind today’s launch of a new Web site attacking GOP presidential rival Fred Thompson.

The site, www.phoneyfred.org, paints an unflattering picture of Thompson, dubbing him: Fancy Fred, Five O’clock Fred, Flip-Flop Fred, McCain Fred, Moron Fred, Playboy Fred, Pro-Choice Fred, Son-of-a-Fred and Trial Lawyer Fred. [View an image of the Web site]

Shortly after a Washington Post reporter made inquiries about the site to the Romney campaign, the site was taken down.

Fred Thompson in period dress — from the Phoney Fred Web site. (PhoneyFred.org)Before it vanished, the front page of the website featured a picture of a regal Thompson dressed in a frilly outfit more befitting a Gilbert and Sullivan production than a presidential campaign. Under the heading, “Playboy Fred,” the site asks the question: “Once a Pro-Choice Skirt Chaser, Now Standard Bearer of the Religious Right?”

Nowhere on the site does it indicate who is responsible for it. But a series of inquiries leads directly to the website of Under the Power Lines, the political consulting firm of Warren Tompkins, Romney’s lead consultant in South Carolina.

They left the section called “Pimp Fred” out of the article, but you can click on the article link and see that it’s there. Pimp Fred, Mitt? Nice way to show your true values. Let’s continue…

The site www.politicanetroots.com brings up the homepage for “Under the Power Lines,” which lists Tompkins as “Partner, Consultant,” along with Terry Sullivan and Welsley Donehue.

South Carolina politics is known to be rough-and-tumble. In 2000, it was in South Carolina that then-candidate John McCain ran into an organized effort to tar his character, including anonymous allegations that he had fathered a black child.

At the time, then-candidate George Bush was desperate to stop a surging McCain, who had just won a stunning upset in the New Hampshire primary. Tompkins was the chief strategist for Bush in South Carolina at the time, though Bush campaign officials have always denied that the campaign was responsible for the attacks.

A spokesman for Romney’s campaign said he would look into questions about the anti-Thompson site. “Our campaign is focused on the issues and ideas that are of paramount concern to voters,” said spokesman Kevin Madden. “The website we are focused on is MittRomney.com.”

Tompkins did not return calls or emails for comment.

So this is how the Romney camp wants to play? Desperate measures for desperate times.

UPDATE: The owner of the web domain is also a Romney donor. From politico:

The owner of the web-host provider used to launch an anti-Fred Thompson website is a donor to Mitt Romney’s campaign.

Matt Heaton, President and CEO of Utah-based bluehost.com, gave $500 to Romney in June.

Until earlier today, his company hosted the domain “phoneyfred.org” that included a trove of personal and political opposition research on Thompson. But after I disclosed the anti-Thompson site just after Noon, the site came down.

Heaton declined to reveal who purchased the domain name.

“I can’t give out any information about site ownership,” he wrote in an e-mail. “I don’t know why it was taken down either. That isn’t something I deal with and is also information we wouldn’t be providing to anyone but the site owner.”

Asked if anybody from the Romney campaign contacted him today about the site, Heaton said he was “not personally aware of anyone from his campaign that has called to talk to us.”

But he cautioned that his company has many clients and customers and said he is “rarely involved personally in these type of matters.”

A Romney spokesman said he would look into the matter, but did not respond to follow-up inquiries about their connection to the site.

  1. JS Says:

The website has mysteriously vanished off the face of the earth…

  2. Tommy Oliver Says:

Yea. They obviously knew they got caught.

  3. Adam Says:

I hope he keeps this up. The more people really get to Romney, the more they’ll see the inner snake beneath that phony smile.

  4. Jason Bonham Says:

Thompson is the death of Romney… It’s only a matter of time.

    Keep dreaming.

Mitt has amassed millions upon millions of dollars in campaign debt

Yeah… to himself. Nice spin. You sound dishonest here. He can give his campaign all he wants. And he has still raised more than anyone else combined without his loans.

If someone in Romney’s team did this it’s a sloppy work. But how about Thompson soming out of the gate attacking Giuliani and McCain.

Thompson is a passing fad. Nothing more.

  5. nowandlater Says:

Nothing wrong with running a political hit website as long as it is factual. This is in the mode as WND, or Eye08 who are just hit job websites. Mitt has to fight back. I bet this was uncovered during the bulgary of his office. Mitt doesn’t have the luxury of commiting felonies to get dirt on him. His opponents however no know bounds.

  6. Jeff Yeager Says:

I’m just going to throw another possibility out there. The campaign was questioned about the site, they investigated and had it taken down. It’s completely possible Mitt wasn’t involved but once he found out, they removed it immediately. It could be either situation.

“And he has still raised more than anyone else combined without his loans.”

Just to clarify, he doesn’t mean all of the candidates combined. He means Romney raised the most with all quarters combined.

  7. Husky Says:

As a devout Mitt supporter, I am bothered that Mitt’s team would be behind this (if true). Especially when Mitt has been attacked at great length by McCain, Brownback, and others. His religion has been attacked horribly in SC. I think Mitt should rise above these type of things and since the site is gone, I hope they have.

This race for me will really come down to one thing, COMPETENCE. I love that Fred is in the race now. I just dont think he will come across as more competent, hard working, innovative, or charismatic as Romney when voters get to compare the two.

As for Real Deal’s thoughts that Romney will be Youtube’d to death. I dont see that, especially when voters in IA wont soon forget who played their rules and contributed to their fundraiser (Ames), and who thumbed their nose at it.

Besides that, people should stop and compare Governor Reagan of the sixties, and candidate and President Reagan in his later years, then ask themselves “was Reagan a conservative convert?”
Consider too that Fred, Rudy, McCain and others have all changed their positions. People who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones.

  8. ACT Blog Says:

You idiots are conveniently forgetting something – that this was a Romney advisor, not directly on orders from Romney himself – unless you can directly tie in the Governor to this site, I think you are best advised to shut your mouths. This is, at least for now, the equivilent of the big brother/Hillary Youtube ad that was created by a worker within the Obama campaign. It is entirely possible that Romney had no knowledge of this. In fact, considering that Romney has not been shy about criticizing his rivals publically before, it seems likely.

  9. Adam Says:

You’re right, ACT. I’m sure Mr. Squeaky Clean will distance himself from the “Romney advisor” just as quickly and as publicly as he threw Larry Craig under the boss. I mean I’m sure he will, right? Since the Larry Craig incident was personal disgust and he wasn’t just cozing up to the so-cons and playing to their hot-button issue, right?

  10. Adam Says:

    Oops – under the bus

  11. ACT Blog Says:

“You’re right, ACT. I’m sure Mr. Squeaky Clean will distance himself from the “Romney advisor” just as quickly and as publicly as he threw Larry Craig under the boss. I mean I’m sure he will, right? Since the Larry Craig incident was personal disgust and he wasn’t just cozing up to the so-cons and playing to their hot-button issue, right?”

Are you suggesting that Romney should have kept Craig? Are you suggesting that he should have continued to allow a Senator who hid a major event from both his collegues (spl?) and the electorate? Or are you simply looking for any and all ways to spin a situation against Romney?

  12. Adam Says:

No. I just thought that his sprint to throw him under the bus had a lot less to do with personal disgust than it did with finding yet another way to carry favor with the so-cons. I think he tried to play the Mr. Clean card. I wonder how quickly he’ll do it this time.

  13. ACT Blog Says:

“No. I just thought that his sprint to throw him under the bus had a lot less to do with personal disgust than it did with finding yet another way to carry favor with the so-cons. I think he tried to play the Mr. Clean card. I wonder how quickly he’ll do it this time.”

Well, I won’t deny that how it would play probably played some role in the decision, but I’m sure you won’t deny that it was the right thing to do?

  14. jrcutler Says:

Pointless Bickering… obvious shot at Romney. As usual, you guyz always have to blame Romney for something someone else did. That is what I call desperation. Some of you can’t stand the fact that Romney has a lot going for him right now, and has for most of his life. Yes, there are people out there that try to play fair throughout their lives. You must just have trust issues. My advice to you guyz is to leave Romney alone – he’s behind in your national polls, so what do you have to worry about if Thompson is a tower of strength and everyone will stick with Rudy thick or thin.

  15. Tommy Oliver Says:

    jrcutler,
The bottom line is Romney or his advisors shouldn’t be involved after all the crap he’s taken from the other campaigns. It makes him look even more hypocritical.

I don’t think it’s the death of Romney by a long shot. This is a minor story, but it’s still showing that they are hardly above the fray.

    Jason,
When Thompson has taken little shots, he’s done it himself or had an email comparing their records. This is personal slander.

  16. Adam Says:

No Jrcutler. Desperation is when your supporters don’t think your message can carry the day on its merits and the only way you can win is to bring your opponents down. Kinda like when Mitt tried to bash Rudy over the immigration issue by disingenuously trying to be mr. Conservative. Romney’s only been conservative on immigration since about the time he got his NRA membership card.

  17. sampo Says:

DUDE! and it was the washington post?! the damage control should be VERY comical.

  18. sampo Says:

at least brownback had the stones to stand by his attacks on romney. the WaPo releases this and camp romney folds like wet cardboard. too funny.

  19. Tommy Oliver Says:

Did you expect any different? Actually, after Brownback pulled his stunts, you’d think Romney would keep the above the fray attitude.

Of course, Brownback attacked Romney’s record, not personally.

  20. Adam Says:

“Of course, Brownback attacked Romney’s record, not personally”

And that’s all it took to really piss off the Romney supporters. I remember hearing something about a glass house and stones when I was a kid…

  21. ACT Blog Says:

Again, is there anyone here who can present any evidence that Romney knew of the site before this article was released? If not, all points you make are mute.

  22. sampo Says:

google cashe is still up if you care to indulge yourself in romney gutter sniping.
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=wBZ&q=site%3Aphoneyfred.org&btnG=Search

  23. ACT Blog Says:

**all points you make are MOOT.

  24. nowandlater Says:

Yawn! This race is not going to be determined by a website (even a factual one to boot)!

  25. nowandlater Says:

Something occurred to me. Fierce Romney critic, Brian Camenker is an IT Security consultant. Couldn’t he be behind the robbery and the revelation of this website?

  26. Jason Bonham Says:

    Tommy,

This wasn’t slander. Slander is spoken word that can be proven to be untrue.

I never saw the site. Was it in an audio format and was there anything you directly contradict with facts?

  27. Tommy Oliver Says:

Calling Thompson a pimp is slander, Jason. Look at the added picture up top in my post.

  28. jrcutler Says:

    jrcutler,
“The bottom line is Romney OR his advisors shouldn’t be involved after all the crap he’s taken from the other campaigns”

There always has to be an OR in there, doesn’t there? Obviously it was an inappropriate site but the fact is that it got very little exposure and was taken down when found out by the campaign. it obviously shows that the Romney campaign found out about it and thought it was inappropriate, and so they solved the problem and deleted it. Could it be that the campaign did the right thing, not vica-versa? Did it occur to you that it wasn’t the campaign that did it, but one person within the campaign? Once again, trust issues, do you argue with me on that?

Go ahead and attack potentially one advisor and say that Romney OR his advisorS did it. It just shows that you know how to make a mountain out of a mole-hill and that you are on a fishing expedition for Romney.

  29. sampo Says:

admittedly i have not followed her campaign but i think hillary clinton but from what i’ve seen, she has handled her campaign with more dignity than romney.

  30. Tommy Oliver Says:

    jrcutler,
I’m making no bigger a deal of this than you guys did of Rudy passing out pamphlets. I don’t think Romney was personally involved, for the record. But this isn’t the first time someone in his staff has been caught doing something like this. One of his advisors was also caught after the LA Times article came out.

  31. jrcutler Says:

Rudy passing out pamphlets? I didn’t care! I actually think and have commented on the fact that Rudy has run a clean campaign – him – his official campaign.

  32. Dave Says:

ACT is right. If anybody comes up with a smoking gun that proves Mitt knew about this it’s a story. Otherwise, and until then, it’s garbage.

  33. nate Says:

If you want to see a “real” hit site made by a Romney supporter you are invited to visit my new webpage. I made it yesterday. Maybe the WaPo will get me too.

  34. Nate G. Says:

I think you’re being a little presumptuous Tommy. Assume the worst if it involves Romney right? I agree with ACT’s points.

  35. nowandlater Says:

Look here, this guy is arguing it was Rudy.

    http://www.blogsforfredthompson.com/giuliani-campaign-behind-phony-fred-site

LOL, look Fred was known to be good at dirty tricks. He is famous for playing dirty tricks on himself and slyly blaming his opponents to engender sympathy.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the case here.

  36. nowandlater Says:

Not surprising that this information is suddenly discovered within days Fred anounces.

Where’s the hitsite on Rudy, McCain? They only did on one Fred? Ah, isn’t that convenient. Poor Fred.

  37. bjalder26 Says:

Please, you losers know Mitt wasn’t involved. He attacks people on their political stances. YOU people however have attacked Mitt personally many times, including this trash piece.

  41. Paul Brown Says:

It just goes to show, when you can’t run a campaign, you either get out of the race — the honorable thing to do — or you run smear campaigns — the RINO thing to do!

  42. KevinP Says:

Tommy Oliver and Sampo were behind the website as an attempt to discredit Romney – may not be true – but it is certainly more credible than trying to say that Romney would resort to such a tactic. Governor Romney doesn’t have to go negative on Senator Thompson – Fred is doing a great job of that all by himself – just by being himself.

  43. Jason Says:

    Tommy.

It’s not slander because it isn’t spoken word.

It has nothing to do with what they called him.

  44. Jason Says:

    Besides,

Did they say Thompson was actually pimping women out for prostitution or were they saying he just has been with a lot of girls and was using the word “pimp” to describe his swinging lifestyle of last decade?

If it’s the latter, again you have no slander. If it’s the former than you have a case of “Libel.”

  45. Chris L. Says:

Tommy Oliver—I noticed early this year that the Romney campaign has on retainer a number of the consultants and operatives who have been involved in previous “slash and burn” tactics from the previous Bush campaigns (S.C. and elsewhere) as well as the assassination job on Steve Forbes in Iowa in 1996. Most are previous associates or employees of Karl Rove, Ralph Reed & Co. I have always assumed that they have been retained for commando operations designed to tear-down those who threaten Romney’s viability. Ironically, those who present themselves as “holier than thou” and the candidate of Christian or family values run the dirtiest and most dishonest campaigns. I’ve seen this up close for many years.

  46. Tommy Oliver Says:

was using the word “pimp” to describe his swinging lifestyle of last decade?

    Jason,
That’s Clinton speak… defining the meaning of “is.” First of all, maybe it’s slander, maybe not, but which ever one it is, but calling a presidential candidate a pimp shows a lack of class. Also, after doing a little more research into it, it seems the guy behind it is none other than Terry Sullivan. Nice hire, the same guy who spread the McCain/baby out of wedlock rumors in 2000. Romney would be wise to ditch this guy.

  47. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Chris L.
Just read that as well. It seems that Tompkins and Sullivan are the same ops who tarnished McCain in 2000. Romney would be smart to clear these guys out. This is getting coverage in South Carolina and could really backfire on him. I still doubt Romney had anything to do with this personally, but he knew what he was hiring when he brought these guys on board.

  48. Chris L. Says:

Tommy (#47), there are more. Check out the history of a firm known as Steinhorst & Feather. Much past association with Ralph Reed and Rove in previous campaigns. They specialize in “animating, organizing, and motivating” Christian Right values voters via direct mail, e-mails, phone calls, push polls, etc. Also, might want to check out the history of Gary Marx. From what I have heard from inside the campaign, the Romney campaign has a whole stable of these folks. The original intent was to replicate the strategy and tactics of the George W. Bush campaign of 2000.

  49. Jason Says:

That’s Clinton speak… defining the meaning of “is.”

Tommy, using terminology correctly shouldn’t be something we call Clintonian. It should just be standard fare. Now I know I am not perfect, but just say ok, it’s not slander, I went a little overboard.

but calling a presidential candidate a pimp shows a lack of class.

I couldn’t agree with you more.

  50. Jason Says:

Gary MArx? Please. He ran the grassroots coalitions for Roberts and Alito nominations and for Bush/Cheney ‘04. If you want to demonize one of the people who helped us take back the court than go ahead. But remember he worked on the same team with Thompson during the Roberts testimony.

Sorry oppo research is fair game, slander isn’t- but no slander existed, let alone anything unfactual. The web site in question was dumb, sophomoric and ridiculous, but there is no evidence it is was from the campaign. As a matter of fact, everything points to some rogue guy doing his own thing.

  51. Chris L. Says:

Correction to #48. Tommy, the name of the firm that I was refering to in comment #48 is Synhorst & Feather. Sorry for the earlier misspelling.

Jason (#50): Yes, Gary Marx was involved in grassroots motivational operation onbehalf of the SCOTUS nominees (under the direction of Rove, RNC, et.al.–nothing wrong with that). He also has other history. I did not demonize him in my earlier comment; I pointed out known facts concerning operational techniques of a set of individuals, Marx being one. Opposition research is fair game as you said, Jason.

  52. Chris L. Says:

By the way—what I have said about the role of Romney consultants, etc., in postings #45 & 48 comes from sources inside their campaign. I’m commenting on what I have been told and what I have seen from looking at their FEC campaign finance reports.

  53. JohnnyG Says:

It’s not wrong to post those things if they’re true. So Mitt is still Squeaky Clean….

  54. JohnnyG Says:

Just kidding! I hope Mitt is not behind it; if he is, then my true love is Ron Paul.

  55. Marksal Says:

I don’t have time to read this entire thread, but the political demonizing of Rove and Reed is silly. Rove led Bush to victory in 2000 when the latter had no business winning, given the peace and prosperity of the time. And Reed, besides unfortunately associating with some cheats (Benjamin Hart and that guy who also messed up Tom DeLay’s reputation), has been a warrior on the conservative side for decades.

Some of Romney’s contributors/supporters appear to have done something stupid. I get that. But last I heard, he hasn’t had a son on his political payroll getting paid big bucks for no work, as Fred Thompson has. Now that’s sleazy!

  56. KT Says:

Jason Bonham I so agree with you that Fred thompson is an old, washed up, dried up, passing fad. However, you are in your own little dream world about MittFlip.

  57. Jason Says:

    KT,

    Dreams do come true.

  58. Chris L. Says:

Marksal (#55), yes, Rove and Reed pulled off tactical victories. Unfortunately, some of their candidates. strategy and tactics have been a disaster for what once was a principled conservative movement and the conservative philosophy of government. Busting up the Reagan coalition is an end result. Don’t believe me? Better take a look at the perception of the Republican/Conservative “brand” these days.

  59. Marksal Says:

Chris, thanks for your reasoned response. However, neither Rove nor Reed is responsible for the destruction of the GOP/conservative brand. Rove may have been put in a policy position in Bush’s second term, but he has always mainly been a political guy, not a governing guy. And I don’t believe he had anything to do with the current war in Iraq, which is at least partly responsible for the current political situation. As for Bush’s never vetoing a GOP spending bill, I don’t know if Rove is partially responsible for that. I think the president himself is most responsible. I agree that Rove was probably responsible in part for the “comprehensive” immigration plan. As for Reed, he hasn’t even been around during these Bush years. He deserves none of the blame whatsoever, most of which belongs to Bush himself for the Iraq War, rampant cronyism and a lack of a spine on spending. (Also for Harriet Miers and immigration.) The rest belongs to the ridiculous suits in Congress (not all of the GOP congressmen and Senators) who call themselves conservatives but are, in fact, nothing more than pigs at a spending trough.

  60. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Jason,
I guess calling Fred a moron can be true in the eye of the beholder, but to me, it’s not true. Calling him a pimp, they were obviously using the play on words, to make it sound vulgar. However, I will give the Romney camp some credit for disavowing it. They still haven’t answered the call for Tompkins though. I’m sorry, but his involvement leads to some skepticism from me. This is the same crew that said McCain had a black child out oof wedlock to scare away voters.

  61. Nate G. Says:

Tommy – for fairness you should add an update to your post that says that Romney campaign disavowed it. Not everyone reads the comments. I will say that I agree with your assessment about Tompkins, but I wouldn’t say that the matter is closed as far as the official Romney campaign is concerned.

“We made it clear that we did not approve of the site and asked for immediate action to make sure it was again in no way affiliated with the campaign,” Madden said in an emailed statement. “The person responsible is not an employee of ours, but we took immediate action to make sure it was clear the site was not affiliated with the campaign.”

With that statement and the fact that the site came down so quickly I’m sure that Governor Romney was furious about this. He knows that even though he had no direct involvement with the site the actions of his reporters reflect on him. I’m sure they are making efforts to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again.

  62. Marksal Says:

I think there’s rampant revisionist history going on in regard to McCain in 2000. The guy blew up on his own. He ranted and raved repeatedly about evangelicals. Basically, he ran against a broad segment of the GOP nominating electorate. You can’t win like that.

  63. sampo Says:

    Marksal,
if you call taking bob jones university to task for banning interracial dating “ranting and raving repeatedly against evangelicals” then yes, McCain is guilty as charged. those of us who know the definition of equality and tolerance know better.

  64. Chris L. Says:

Marksal (#60)– Okay, point taken. But, my observation of presidential politics over many years has led me to conclude that with regard to presidential elections and the presidency, how a guy gets elected will be a major determinent of the success of his presidency, especially his ability to lead the country and inspire confidence in that leadership. For example, Reagan never used social/personal wedge issues in his campaigns; he won well on the substantive issues and I believe that had a lot to do with his success in office.

  65. Shawnie Says:

That is not Romney’s style. And it is traced to a source he would not have much direct contact with. Objectively, he or his top brass took care of it when they found out about it. The author of the website was NOT doing Romney any favors, and Romney is too smart for that kind of gutter sludge.

Furthermore, I doubt Romney would do an all out war for South Carolina. It is a waste of his time.

  66. Marksal Says:

Sampo, no, I am not talking about Bob Jones University at all. I am talking about McCain talking to the press, saliva spewing from his mouth, as he damned evangelicals for exercising their rights to participate in the GOP nominating process.

By the way, as a Jewish-born American whose mother barely escaped the Holocaust in Germany (many of her/my other relatives did not), I think I know something about equality and tolerance.

  67. sampo Says:

you must have been infuriated to learn that bob jones banned interracial dating. how much credit do you give mccain for reversing the school’s 75 year tradition of bigitry?

  68. Marksal Says:

“Infuriated”? Not really. It seemed stupid to me. It was a vestige of an earlier time.

I give McCain no credit for any reversal in the policy. But even if I did, it would pale to the discredit I would heap on him for campaign-finance “reform,” comprehensive immigration “reform,” voting NO on the Bush tax cuts; and for insinuating (or worse) that the U.S. has been torturing its enemies.

  69. sampo Says:

preventing finance reform is more important than racism…. sigh. sounds like you dont even care of the details. but if you change your mind, the details are quite interesting… but i digress. we’ve got a pretty fundamental disagreement.

  70. Shawnie Says:

Did you folks notice the caustic Jeri style tantrum from the Thompson camp? They are not doing the Republican party any favors.
