Team Thompson:
“There is no room in our party for this kind of smut. As the top executive of his own campaign, Gov. Romney should take full responsibility for this type of high-tech gutter politics and issue an immediate apology. In addition, Gov. Romney should exercise some of his much-touted executive acumen, take control of his flailing campaign, and immediately terminate anyone and everyone related to this outrage.
Does anyone really think Team Thompson is this angry? does anyone really think they have been hurt by this?
My opinions:
1. This is good for fodder, nothing else.
2. Either Team Thompson is really upset (wow- thin skin!), or is he living up to the website name that he is so “upset” about?
3. Thompson is excellent at playing the victim, he’s done it in every campaign so far. He makes Al Sharpton look like an amateur.
Are we going to get 4 months of Thompson and his surrogates playing the victim card?

Methinks there’s a little bit of projection going on here:
“In addition, Gov. Romney should exercise some of his much-touted executive acumen,
take control of his flailing campaign, and immediately terminate anyone and everyone
related to this outrage.”
One of the biggest weaknesses FT has is his lack of managerial and executive experience.
I’m guessing Team Thompson is jumping all over this one as an attempt to hide or divert
attention away from this (and their not-so-solid campaign so far). It sounds
(I don’t know personally) like they are very threatened by Mitt Romney.
If this had happened with a candidate in the second tier — do you think you would have
heard this much whining and foot-stomping?
I think not.
All this attention on this really minor event elevates Romney, in my opinion.

Fred is the savior! Relinquish your soul to him!
September 12th, 2007 at 2:34 am
Randy, you gave me a good, hearty laugh. Thanks!

In the meantime, the real news is that Fred Thompson is ducking out of yet another opportunity to
debate and discuss the issues with another GOP candidate, Gov. Mike Huckabe (and possibly others).
Thompson said “no” to Huckabee’s acceptance of Thompson’s invitation to a Lincoln/Douglas-style
debate.
Why?!
September 12th, 2007 at 2:46 am
Sigh…We are stuck with these guys for the next 4 months. It’s pathetic, we acting worse than the Dems.
September 12th, 2007 at 2:59 am
I know. It makes me feel kind of sick in my stomach. I think everyone is just so scared
that Hillary is going to be elected in 2008 that they are desperate to have the guy they
think can beat her get nominated.
I have never been involved in a primary before so all this in-fighting is new to me.

I’m thinking of joining a 12-step PA Anonymous program – if I can find one close by.
I’m truly addicted.

Everyone needs to take the time to watch newt’s speech at the AEI. It is a bombshell!! He makes these other candidtes look like the pandering politicians that they really are. I wish I could say I knew he was actually going to do something with all of these excellent ideas he has, like run for pres., but watch the speech.

sorry guys. here’s the speech.

Tyler, Newt is a great strategist and policy guy but I don’t find him presidential. Any Republican President would be wise to hire him as the go to guy on task forces and diplomatic missions. Kind of like how Democrats always turn to Warren Christopher, George Mitchell, and Jimmy Carter and we use James Baker. Thats the kind of role I think he’s best suited for.
We need a GOP version of a supergroup like The Traveling Wilburys. Some kind of non-cabinet brainstorming session in a locked room just pumping out creative ideas. Newt Gingrich, Bill Bennett, Robert Bork along with some younger guys like Rick Santorum would kick ass at something like this.
September 12th, 2007 at 5:00 am
A bit off topic, but I’m thinking more and more Bloomberg is going to get in on an indie ticket and play the manager card to the hilt. This is going to take all the air of out of Romeny’s and Rudy’s executive balloon big time because , while both are accomplished execs, they’re like children compared to Bloomberg in that respect. Bloom is alos going to tap into the HUGE anti war sentiment and use it not only against the Republican nom. but also against Hillary. IMHO Bloomie will get more of the indie vote than Perot got in 92.
September 12th, 2007 at 5:02 am
Addendum: perhaps most importantly, he doesn’t have to spend 5 minutes fundraising.
September 12th, 2007 at 6:23 am
Jeri is running the show, what did you expect? This is a caustic Jeri style tantrum. Expect more. Thompson is hurting the Republican party as a whole.
September 12th, 2007 at 6:42 am
There is no doubt that Thompson is pulling support from Romney. Giuliani has been steady in the high 20’s since May. Romney has been steady or slowly rising since then and since Thompson joined the race Romney’s trajectory (which Mitt supporters have long touted) has taken a nosedive. So complaints from the Romney crowd (while in many cases legit) are completely predictable.

‘Either Team Thompson is really upset (wow- thin skin!), or is he living up to the website name that he is so “upset†about? ‘
He’s taking his cues from Romney.

Welcome to the big leagues, Fred.
September 12th, 2007 at 9:03 am
I think Shawnie is right. It must be Jeri, because no professional presidential campaign would go this far over the top without being overridden by a candidate’s wife who’s been given a bit much in the way of free-reign. No wonder Thompson can’t keep a campaign team together! They’ve been dropping like flies, and while he has his faults, Fred seems a little too rational and even-tempered to account for it.
September 12th, 2007 at 10:36 am
Here is the best part of the Thompson campaign quote about Romney:
“This latest episode only serves to prove what many voters are already figuring out: Mitt Romney will do anything, say anything, smear any opponent and flip flop on any position in order to win. The American people in general and the Republican Party in particular deserve better than this”.
So if the American people deserve better than a candidate that will smear any opponent, they deserve
better than Thompson. But maybe Jeri wrote this?
September 12th, 2007 at 10:48 am
I’m guessing Jeri is the one with the fire in the belly. And just from observing and
listening to FT, I’m guessing he could give a rat’s a*& about this whole incident.
He just seems too laid back.
Back to my premise that FT is just doing this to make his pretty, young wife happy.
September 12th, 2007 at 11:12 am
Bethtopaz: ‘I’m guessing Jeri is the one with the fire in the belly’
Figures. She didn’t marry him for his looks or youth, that’s for sure.
September 12th, 2007 at 11:25 am
Wasn’t that Marriott porn smear on Mitt Romney traced back to someone connected to the Thompson team? Didn’t that story disappear very quickly after this connection came to light?
If Fred Thompson has a problem he should speak for himself. Relying on aides to play hardball makes him look like a wimp.
September 12th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
Argamenon,
No, it wasn’t traced back to Thompson’s team. That’s horsesh!t
September 12th, 2007 at 12:04 pm
That story was traced back to David Brody, who broke the thing, and two Christian Groups that haven’t been connteted to Thompson.

More crying from the Rombots
Fred is destroying them in the polls and going after them hard. Mitt’s lack of response makes him look like the weak leader he is. Thompson is going for a knock out blow early.
Mitt is finished. It’s great watching all the Rombots cry and whine.
September 12th, 2007 at 12:16 pm
More crying from Jim about the Rombots.
Thompson has no chance in important early states, he is DOA.
September 12th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Jim,
Agree with you 100%, this is the begining of the end for Romney, he needs to admit that he was behind this and step up. Fred Thompson’s surge will only continue to grow stronger and stronger, and Mitt Romney will be left blowing in the wind.
September 12th, 2007 at 4:47 pm
Actually, I predict it won’t be Thompson. Jeri will destroy him in a short amount of time. He can’t debate, has no substance and she is over-reaching and out of control. The flap over the Romney website is the beginning of the Fred and Jeri show. Romney is too resilient, professional and clever to be done in so soon. Giuliani is not my cup of tea, but he is also smarter then “Jed”. I don’t like Giuliani, but I would take him anyday over JED.
September 12th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
About Lincoln/Douglas-style debate, is anyone for Romney vs Thomspon? By the way, Do anyone know if those frontrunners are going to be in the American Family Alliance debate on 17th?
September 12th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
SGS: ‘By the way, Do anyone know if those frontrunners are going to be in the American Family Alliance debate on 17th?’
No, they won’t be attending. And rightly so, they won’t want to be associated with those lunatics.
September 12th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
Shawnie, Who’s JED?
September 13th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
Sorry. Brad and Angelina = Brangelina. Jeri and Fred (because their campaign is SO intertwined) = Jed. It’s even more perfect because he is from Tennessee with that draaawl. And the reason I put Jeri’s part of the name first? Who is leading who by the nose? I guess if it has to be expleained, it wasn’t very clever. But I tried.
September 14th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Jed — you mean like Jed Clampet of the Beverly Hillbillies? That’s cute.
And yes, I do suspect also that Jeri is leading the effort to get Fred nominated.
