Minuteman Founder Endorses Huckabee

I bet that’s a headline no one was expecting to read today:

Snowed in, the Mike Huckabee campaign cancelled his morning events and organized an impromptu news conference where he received the endorsement of Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the anti-illegal immigration Minuteman Project.

Huckabee accused the federal government of “failing” to put together an immigration policy where people “come through the front door, not the back door” and live with their “head held up high. Calling the “amnesty of the 1980s” a “miserable failure,” Huckabee said “we’ve created” a “society where people are forced into hiding.”

Gilchrist said he had been made aware of Huckabee’s plan a month ago and Huckabee said the endorsement had nothing to do with Romney’s new ad criticizing him on the immigration issue and was merely “providential.”

It’s all the more surprising considering Mike Huckabee was one of the stronger advocates for comprehensive immigration reform out there and has accused some critics of racism as recently as last year. How times have changed.

    WHAT THE –

  2. LJ Says:

    TLG,

    My thoughts exactly.

  3. Matthew E. Miller Says:

Unreal. Huckabee was to the left of John McCain on illegal immigration; Gilchrist is loony tunes if he thinks compassionate Pastor Mike will do anything positive about illegal immigration.

  4. Micah Says:

The GOP is in REAL trouble!

  5. Jonathan Says:

I though that Gilchrist was running for the Constitution Party nomination?

  6. Erik Says:

This guy needs a piss test. Can you say drug abuse?

  7. LJ Says:

    Matthew,

I agree. It’s depressing to endure years of comments about how McCain should be disqualified for the Presidency based on a few positions when Huckabee is to the left of McCain on almost everything.

  8. Jonathan Says:

I would feel safer with McCain as president everyday as compared to Huckabee

  9. bethtopaz Says:

Is he going off Hucks “New Strong Immigration Policy?!”

If he is, he is seriously smoking something he found on one of those illegals trying to cross the Border.

    Unbelievable!

  10. bethtopaz Says:

Whoops - the dupication police didn’t catch this!

  11. Joe Says:

I’m surprised. This is a Rudy-type endorsement. And dissappointed. Mike Huckabee is not the man for us.

  12. jcali Says:

Gilcrest is a meathead. I’ve watched tons of his videos on youtube and it’s hard to view him in a positive light.

  13. Joe Says:

    Gilcrest is a hero.

  14. steve Says:

Someone please Look up that guys religion.

  15. Richard P Says:

He’s a social conservative Catholic. I can’t believe he’d pick Huckabee on social grounds though. THis makes no sense.

  16. Rett Hatcher Says:

Hmmm…can you say ad with minutemen in iowa…hmmm

  17. Greg Says:

Gilchrist is a very religious man. I’ve seen him invoke the name of God a lot when talking about securing the borders.

  18. steve Says:

this is what Gilchrist said about McCain

“If John McCain enters the race for president I will definitely run. John McCain should have forfeited his right to run for president on the Republican Party the moment he put his name on immigration legislation with Sen. Ted Kennedy.”

    see #3

    Are we missing something here?

  19. Feltcher Says:

Wow, this is indeed a surprise. This immediately beefs up Huckabee’s immigration bona fides, just in time to throw at Romney tomorrow in the debate. If I were Huckabee I’d buy a powerball ticket.

  20. ThatLibertarianGuy Says:

Here’s what our good friend the Wiki says:

    “Religious Views

Gilchrist is a conservative Roman Catholic. He is strongly opposed to and critical of abortion, but has mixed views on homosexual civil unions and same sex marriage.”

What the hell is going on here?

  21. Jonathan Says:

Steve: Maybe he is saying that if McCain wins the nomination he will run

  22. LJ Says:

    What’s up is down
    What’s down is up

My head is about to explode. It just doesn’t make any sense.

  23. Peter Says:

    Poor Romney camp……everyone’s against them!

  24. Peter Says:

Oh well…a year ago I was saying Huckabee would win and all the snarky campaign people could do was laugh their heads off….guess I get to laugh now that all their precious candidates are self-destructing…

  25. Jonathan Says:

Well it’s been fun but I’m outta here. On to my first college final (Algaebra, God help me).

  26. steve Says:

Peter since you are so prophetic maybe you can answer the question no other huckster on this site can:

putting Hucky’s negetive record aside can you point me to a notworthy accomplishment (I stress noteworthy). I’m not looking for a copy and past bulleted list from his site. I’m looking for somehting simple and noncontroversial (nobody can dispute) like turning around the olympics or turning around private companies or turning around NYC. You know something big that he has done that can’t be debated wether it was good or not.

In light of what is happening however I must say that past accomplishments don’t seem to matter anymore.

  27. Richard P Says:

Gilchrist is either taking his direction from God, or he’s very ill informed on Huckabee’s record and has only seen Huck’s recent immigration strategy.

Is Gilchrist THE Minuteman, or is someone in the organization able to endorse a different candidate and stop the lunacy.

  28. steve Says:

HUck camp is just accused Rush of sabataging their campaign. He has also accused hannity of sabatage. THe guy is the biggest Whiner I have ever seen.

  29. Ben1 Says:

    Go Huck!!!!!

  30. Mcon Says:

    steve,

where? I would love for them to get on rush’s bad side.

  31. Feltcher Says:

Romney working on companies that closed down or sent jobs overseas is not disputed? Giuliani’s record in NYC of using taxes to drive and protect his mistress and her dog is not disputed?

Put down the bottle and go to rehab.

  32. steve Says:

30 - Rush just mentioned it on his program.

  33. Brett P Says:

This is an interesting campaign season, that is for sure! Go Mike!

  34. steve Says:

#31 Fletcher- if you are disputing romney’s success at business you are the only one. if you are disputing the fact that NYC was not turned around you are the only one. The fact is you are dodging the question because Huck has no conservative accomplishments.

  35. Conservative Gladiator Says:

I’ll bet that Gilchrist is an Evangelical…

  36. steve Says:

    *NYC was turned around

  37. Richard P Says:

“Romney working on companies that closed down or sent jobs overseas is not disputed?”

    Feltcher, you’re a liberal!

  38. MWS Says:

I just heard Tancredo’s head explode.

  39. MWS Says:

Well, Huckabee is now bulletproof on immigration, just in time for Romney’s new ad.

Maybe now Huck can run that commercial:

“Two governors. Both anti-illegal immigration. Let’s look at their records on the right to life…”

  40. MWS Says:

BTW, Rush said today (this is a close paraphrase):

“I only have one problem with Huckabee; exercise. He’s for it, and I’m against it.”

  41. Hot Air » Blog Archive » Huh? Founder of Minuteman Project endorses … Huckabee? Says:

[...] And why not? What better choice for a border enforcer than a guy known for blaming opposition to comprehensive immigration reform on “racism or nativism”? Snowed in, the Mike Huckabee campaign cancelled his morning events and organized an impromptu news conference where he received the endorsement of Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the anti-illegal immigration Minuteman Project. [...]

  42. dubious Says:

i bet God told him to vote for Huckabee. why else would someone with his clear record of uspportin amnesty get his vote? ? it would not b rational. like I said, I am sure he became aware that Huck is our true Christian leader comes to deliver the US from anti christian forces.

  43. dubious Says:

fletcher, its called the freemarket. it is what amreican the most powerful nation in the world. got a problem with that you populist communist.

  44. Conservative Gladiator Says:

Rush isn’t coming clean with us and it has to do with his job, but I’m sure that he knows about the things that Huckabee’s about and doesn’t like it at all. But what does he care? He doesn’t get paid to take Gomer or any of the candidates down at this point. He did mention though that he’ll have pick when he’s ready. He still thinks it’s early. In public, it doesn’t matter to him and his ilk who represent us as the POTUS because that ends what he can talk about and alienates his listeners who are his pick’s opponents.

One things for sure though and that is Rush Limbaugh will not back a Mike “Gomer” Huckabee.

  45. Michael Says:

This flies in the face of Romney’s new ad.

  46. Feltcher Says:

Dubious, you need a lesson in economics, english, grammar, spelling, and probably potty training. Is your daughter ashamed of you?

  47. Cory Says:

Huckabee is as liberal as Republicans come. Despite the recent endorsement, he is VERY weak in illegal immigration. He is weak on foreign policy. And he is weak on fiscal conservatism. Who are these people supporting Huckabee right now?!? If Evangelicals manage to get him nominated and then he loses big to Hillary, they will have hell to pay from other conservatives for helping to give the Presidency to Hillary!

  48. Ace Sums Up My Feelings on Huckabee : The American Pundit Says:

[...] In fact, if, given his record and how he is now obviously pandering to evangelicals and who knows what he promised Gilchrist to get his endorsement, if he buys the Republican nod with a smile, a prayer and empty promises, I’m [...]

  49. Greg Says:

There are still many other illegal immigration groups all over Huckabee. The Minutemen Group was always viewed poorly in public. The real anti-illegal immigration groups are scared to death of Huckabee.

  50. SDGOP Says:

Rush has in the past called huckabee a closet democrat, but he hasn’t bothered to repeat that in some time.

  51. Bob Says:

Maybe someone called in claiming to be Gilchrist! Huckabee is such a snake oil salesman.. but unfortuantely most people don’t give a lot of thought to this thing. grrrrrrrrr

  52. Randy Says:

Romney can counter with his endorsement from Sheriff Joe Arapio from Arizona.

  53. Jody Says:

I think you guys have never been in the modern day Republican Party of Reagan.. The socons have brought the party to paower and will be the ones to keep the party in power. This site is the minority in the Republican party today. I enjoy the “BIG TENT” and everyone is invited to come in and watch the show, but the main event has to be focused on the issues that the majority of people are there to see.

  54. sampo Says:

did anyone hear my jaw drop to the floor?
