From MSNBC:
Gov. Rick Perry has been campaigning for Giuliani after endorsing him on October 17, but today he had a slip of tongue implying support for Huckabee, saying the former governor is the best candidate for ending abortion. “The issue becomes very, very clear to me from the standpoint of who I want to support and it is Mike Huckabee.” Perry said yesterday while filing papers for Giuliani to participate in the Texas primary. “And it goes to the next level, who do we have that is the most electable of our the candidates, and I think without a doubt it is Rudy Giuliani.”
Perry became defensive when reporters then asked him if he thought Huckabee is indeed the best candidate on the abortion issue. While Giuliani has come under fire for his stance on abortion, Perry reiterated he believes Giuliani is the most electable candidate. “I’m sorry,” he later replied. “I made an error. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.”
Those comments probably went over real well with the former Mayor’s campaign (sarcasm). Sometimes people should either hold their tongue or stick by their decisions. Perry’s comments are quite disturbing to me. Support the person you believe in. If the only reason Perry endorsed Giuliani is electability, then he is being dishonest and unfair to the Giuliani campaign. Comments like that only fuel the pundits and bloggers into a whirlwind of spin.

You have got to be kidding me Tommy… this was 100% a slip of the tounge… first, this happened like 3 or 4 days ago. Perry has been campaigning in Iowa for Rudy every other week. He is 100% behind Rudy. I can’t believe you would even bring this up.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:51 pm
Iowa,
You need to seriously relax. I brought it up and actually defended Giuliani. I thought it was a dishonest remark, adn I just came across it.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
You title was is Perry having second thoughts…. NO HE ISN’T.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
That’s pretty bad when one of Rudy’s “big” endorsements says that Rudy is awful when it comes to the abortion issue. And, we want this guy to represent the GOP and rid us of Roe v. Wade? Ha! If Perry can’t even say that Rudy would fully represent our social issues, than how can anyone represent that Rudy will unite our party?
December 13th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
wtf???
December 13th, 2007 at 4:56 pm
brett….just out of curiosity, who do you support?
December 13th, 2007 at 4:57 pm
Where exactly did Perry say that Rudy was awful Brett??? Moron.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
The local newspaper reported the context and it is clearly a slip of the tongue.

“…
While Mr. Huckabee might be doing well in Iowa and New Hampshire, Mr. Perry replied, he strongly believes that Mr. Giuliani will win in the delegate-rich states that cast ballots Feb. 5.
He said Mr. Giuliani is the best, most experienced GOP candidate, one who has pledged to nominate Supreme Court justices in the mold of conservatives Samuel Alito and Antonin Scalia.
“If that is the model, the issue becomes very, very clear to me from the standpoint of who I want to support, and it is Mike Huckabee,” Mr. Perry said.
When asked to explain that statement, the governor seemed surprised that he said Huckabee and immediately corrected himself, saying he meant Rudy Giuliani. ….”

Iowa,
The title of this post is in the form of a question. Nowhere does it state that Rick Perry is having second thoughts. It asks the question “Is Rick Perry having Second Thoughts?”
December 13th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
Good for Perry…I didn’t think he had any conviction left in him after endorsing Rudy…
December 13th, 2007 at 5:04 pm
i think this underscores the lack of the “establishment” candidate. you know what republicans? this year you’re not going to get the perfect guy, and i think thats great. lifes not perfect, and niether are presidential candidates.
December 13th, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Tommy,
There is no evidence to suggest Perry is having second thoughts, and the suggestion that he should keep his mouth shut is absurd.
You have swallowed whole MSNBC’s nefarious narrative, which was, as Iowa indicated, a 100% slip of the tongue.
Here is how this non-story was reported (in its proper context, I might add) by the Dallas Morning News:
After filing in Texas for Mr. Giuliani, Mr. Perry was asked if he has any buyer’s remorse about his early support for Mr. Giuliani, especially now that Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee – a friend of Mr. Perry’s and a kindred spirit on conservative issues – is surging in national polls.

A President can’t get rid of Roe.
Not Reagan. Not Bush I. Not Bush II. Not anyone.
December 13th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
All this proves to me is that abolishing all abortions immediately is not Perry’s only criteria for the presidency. And it shouldn’t be.
December 13th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
Why not? Saving innocent human lives isn’t as important as torturing muslims?
December 13th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
Opinionated,
Thats true. But you have to realize that Bush II has nominated 2 men to the surpreme court who are conservative and now whoever wins the 2208 election will likely have 2, but at least 1 supreme court nomination, and that would be huge b/c that would be the end of Roe V. Wade b/c we would have a Conservative Supreme Court!!

17 Bryan
O’Connor was supposed to be “Conservative” as was Souter.
You never know until they vote.
Giuliani has promised the type of Justice you want. He has made the promise without pretended to be something he is not. He didn’t see the light running for one office as compared to another. Probably makes him more trustworthy on the issue.
December 13th, 2007 at 6:21 pm
Yeah, it’s just awful when people speak their minds in politics.

More confirmation of something we Texans have known for a long time: Rick Perry is awful.
December 13th, 2007 at 9:24 pm
Huckabee will win Texan. Perry knows that now. He jumped on Guiliani early, and now he’s wishing he hadn’t. Don’t worry, Gov. Perry…no hard feelings. Come on board. Huckabee is a very forgiving man.
