Compare and Contrast

One of the reasons that I’ve been despairing over the rise of Huckabee is because it happened at the perfect time. He’s had an incredible surge in the polls and tons of free media coverage. That is what millions of voters will see before they tune out of politics between Christmas and New Years. As soon as they return from their holiday, the first thing they’ll see is Mike Huckabee dominating Mitt Romney in the Iowa Caucuses. That’s why Romney has decided that he needs to go negative now in order to change the narrative.

Pretend you’re an Iowa voter. Watch the latest Mitt Romney ad first. Let it sink in for a minute.

Then, watch the latest Mike Huckabee ad.

Do you think Romney managed to change the narrative there? Me neither.

  1. Iowa Says:

    Romney- Attack Ad

    Huck- Nice guy ad

    Winner- Huck…

  2. ben Says:

Great job of out-smarting the politico’s on Romneys team Huckabee!!!

  3. Blake Says:

Nice Analysis. Any thoughts on McCain in SC?

  4. Michael Reichard Says:

That was a great idea by Huck’s people.

Going negative at this time of the year probabaly won’t help Romney, but I understand that he has no choice.

  5. fran Says:

Hi I’m Mike Huckabee, and I want to avoid the issues until after the caucus, because frankly… The status quo looks pretty good right now.

  6. JohioW Says:

Wow. Gag me with a wooden spoon. This is why so many of the other Republicans (non-evangelical) have sucpicious thoughts about evangelical voters.

Huckabee has no substance whatsoever and is an empty candidate that can only speak in Preacher-ise. I hope the voters of Iowa will see through this shrilless attempt to play on their emotions, buecause this candidate has nothing to offer America.

  7. Micah Says:

    Vintage Mike. No substance.

  8. Michael Reichard Says:

Whatever you think about Huck, you have to admit, good ad leading into Christmas.

  9. David Shenk Says:

Hi I’m Mike Huckabee, let’s not debate the issues. I mean it’s only the leader of the free world. Can we vote tomorrow?

  10. Carson Says:

#6 I agree, this has got to be the most ridiculous ad I’ve ever seen.

  11. FCOH Says:

This ad is further evidence that Huckabee concedes argument of the issues to his competitors.

I expect we’ll continue to see more bobbing and weaving from the Huckabee camp as the glaring spotlight intensifies. Another “make ‘em feel warm and fuzzy while avoiding discussion of the issues and running away from his record as governor at all costs and get their vote” effort by the Huck-a-team.

It is a nice ad and will appeal to the segment of the population that does not want to cast an informed vote.

  12. ColoradoRepublican Says:

Huckabee: Don’t worry about the issues, just remember that I drink “Jesus Juice”.

  13. dubious Says:

I just threw up watching this ad.

while romney and rudy run on their records, huck runs away from his with ads shamelessy using Christ to get him in office and jokes with chuck norris. he is ht only candidate trying to apeal to pure motion and religious convictions to get him elected. where is the substance.

it is insulting that he would think us voters are so stupid that we vote on these types of tings.

well, now i know who i want to be commander in chief, this guy who makes jokes with chuck norris and who wished me a merry christmass. i am so stupid that i can’t even think straight so i think i will vote for him for these reasons.

it is a shame that huckabee is doing well. it is telling that none of his ads speak to his record.

  14. Jared Says:

For those Huckabee supporters out there, save this ad, and replay it when Hillary is POTUS. Maybe it will help you feel all warm and fuzzy inside as our country goes down the toilet thanks to Huck-a-Hillary.

  15. JohioW Says:

#13 – This is a shameless attempt to use Christ to get him elected.

  16. sjd Says:

Hi I’m Mike Huckabee. In this ever so important race for President of the United States of America, I’d rather not discuss the issues. Let’s celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and vote tomorrow! Yay!

  17. cwpete Says:

It is a nice ad, but it tell you absolutely nothing. No meaning at all with it. Just a nice guy saying ‘Merry Christmas.’

  18. JohioW Says:

Remember, this is also a play to the voters in Iowa – “Remember, I siad Christ and Merry Christmas in my ad. Romney did not. Who are you going to vote for?”

  19. sjd Says:

And by the way, I’m the most anti-abortion person on this website. And I’m for Romney. Pandering does nothing for me.

  20. Michael Reichard Says:

Regardless of what you say, it will resonate with voters. A “Break from Politics”. Not only that but they’ll be with their families on Christmas and think about the things that are most important in life, People.

  21. Psycheout Says:

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you all get to spend some quality time with your families. This is the season of good will and cheer, after all.

  22. Illinoisguy Says:

For those of you that use the Holy Bible, you may want to apply St. Matthew 7:14, 15. “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly, they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs from thistles?” Mike Huckabee sometimes sounds great, but his record as Governor of Arkansas, and his current rhetoric discloses his true character. What he would love his followers to do now, and what this ad is intended to do, is encourage people to stop looking into the records, just sit back and enjoy the holiday season. That’s the only way he can keep his followers, otherwise they will catch on and leave him in time.

It’s amazing that all the other candidates stand back and let Mitt do all the work to bring this guy down. Do they not realize their own candidates’ ships are about to sink if they don’t stop him?

  23. JohioW Says:

I do agree, and sadly so, that this will probably help Huckabee. But, if Huck’s the nominee it will give me something else to do next year rather than working for the campaign like I have done the past few elections.

  24. fran Says:

Did I here him mutter under his breath “Don’t Mormon’s believe that Christ was born in April?”

  25. dubious Says:

hi, my name is mike huckabee. i have two things going for me: i am a smooth talker and God has endorsed me. That is all i need to get the gop nod and all i need to completly tank in agenneral election.

  26. Micah Says:

I hope Huckabee gets struck by lightening for using Christ his ticket to the White House.

  27. dubious Says:

    #23, word. me too.

  28. dubious Says:

this ad really does speak to the weakness of mike huckabee. theer is a lot to what 22 says.

  29. FCOH Says:

I had to play the ad in slow motion to pick up the sound in the background…

“Remember, it is not your duty to be an informed voter. It is Christmas afterall – forget about a serious study of the issues and positions, and whatever you do, don’t look at my record and how I governed in Arkansas and all of those lapses of ethical judgement – they’re not important. It’s Christmas and we need to remember Christ. Forget the election – forget about who you want to vote for, just remember that you can trust everything you hear from me. Now go be good Christians and run out there and vote.”

Too bad Huckabee has painted himself into this corner that a reason-minded voter has to read the subtext of everything he says and does.

  30. Axel G. (independent) Says:

I think the best thing for the GOP is to take Hillary out in Iowa. I heard this idea yesterday from a well-known conservative writer. I don’t know if its possible for republicans to vote in the dem caucus, but seems like such a great idea to strangle Hillary’s campaign in the crib. But perhaps its too machiavellian to work.

  31. Greg Says:

It will only help Huck with the base that he now has. The rest of the voters who want to be educated on Mik’e record are not going to enjoy this so much. Any word on getting another debate together before Iowa. I know that a lot of the candidates were hoping for one.

  32. Jason Bonham Says:

Man, this guy is a charlatan.

  33. cwpete Says:

Can you imagine the reaction if Romney had done a ad like this?

  34. David Says:

I guess non-Christians can go pound sand. So be it. Mike Huckabee will force this 20-year Republican to pull the lever for a democrat for the first time.

I’d like to be more eloquent, but the bottom line is: this guy just pisses me off.

  35. Micah Says:

    #34, Amen brother.

  36. MWS Says:

    Fran,

“Did I here him mutter under his breath “Don’t Mormon’s believe that Christ was born in April?”

LOL! That was actually really witty.

  37. dubious Says:

    axel.

i think the best thing for the GOP is that Hillary gets nominated personally. Who else woul unify us when we are so fractured more than hillary rodham clinton. just mentioning her name creates an emotional reaction among the GOP base.

i disagree with you. hillary would be the GOP’s christmas gift.

  38. Tommy Oliver Says:

    JESUS!!! (literally)

  39. MWS Says:

    Jason,

“Man, this guy is a charlatan.”

    As opposed to………

    ……Romney???

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I bet you truly believe that if Romney had run for governor in Utah that he would have run as an impassion defender of “choice” just like he was in Massachusetts. You really, truly believe that, don’t you?

  40. Jack Says:

If Romney did this ad, it would be called pandering. Which is exactly what Huck is doing. (it’s sad that a simple Christmas message would be considered pandering, but that’s politics)

When is Fred going to take Huck down a couple of notches?
Fred should take out an ad saying, “while you are opening the presents with Mike…don’t answer the door it might be an ex-murderer that Mike invited over..oh yeah the presents you were planning to buy are now 23% more expensive”

  41. MarkG Says:

That’s an interesting contrast, LJ. So voters in IA have been blanketed with Romney’s 10-month campaign of introducing himself. And now he morphs into the Boston Strangler devilishly intent on bringing down Huck, the Spirit of Christmas.

Good luck on that one. Someone needs to get Mitt back to the factory to upgrade his AI unit. Russert apparently broke it yesterday…

  42. Abe Says:

Huckabee = It takes a “warm, cozy, christian” village

Romney = Actual thought, reason and substance

  43. Michael Reichard Says:

Man you guys are really over the top, if Romney would/have run a similiar ad I would have thought it to be a good idea.

  44. fran Says:

    #36

    Thanks MWS.

Too bad I can’t bring myself to spell very well today.

  45. Casey Says:

Huckabee or Hillary….hummm. I refused to vote Democrat because of her but damn, if it’s a choice between her or the Huckster I think I’ll serve drinks at the Democratic Caucus.

  46. Arron T. Says:

    Huck is piece of crap.

  47. Abe Says:

    Hey Everybody,

I don’t think the Huckster can run any more ads after airing this……

  48. Illinoisguy Says:

Try 34% higher, don’t use Huck’s numbers; they aren’t even close.

  49. Michael Reichard Says:

    Abe,

On Romney you forgot, must be willing to change views on virtually anything for expediency.

He is thinking alright, which position should I change this time?

He is a phony and people see that.

  50. Brett P Says:

you guys are amazing. You can spin anything into a slanderous attack. This is just an ad to get him in front of the people and let them see some of his character.
Chill out – relax. Just because Mike doesn’t respond to attacks or criticism doesn’t mean that he is ignoring issues. He is not going to go negative, and he is not gonna waste our money on ads responding to attacks when the MSM gives him a platform to do that.
Mike uses his ad money very wisely -he promotes Mike. He doesn’t tear anyone down and doesn’t waste time responding to nonsensical accusations.
People are very tired of the politics-as-usual mentality of America- they see Mike as a way to bring about a new chapter in America politics.
People that lived in Arkansas while he governed (13 years at Gov or LtGov) love him. He has the highest approval ratings in this state. Even Hillary is losing that state in approval ratings.. Mike’s message is resonating.
    Go Mike!

  51. Abe Says:

Like his family, friends, business associates, co-workers…….Everyone who knows him well….

  52. FCOH Says:

43 – although Romney would have had to change the verbaige, ever so slightly to talk about the birth of “the Mormon Christ”, right?

  53. Opinionated Says:

    Look at the bright side.

If Huckabee is the nominee we get to find out how the nation really feels about abortion, gays, subservient wives, turning the other cheek to our enemies, ignorance of science, if Chuck Norris is more popular then Oprah, God in politics, etc.

The bad news is that we will also find out just how much damage an Obama or Clinton and a Democrat Congress can do in four short years.

    Huckabee won’t be the nominee.

  54. UA Says:

what is so wrong with the ad? now it’s too politically incorrect to say “Merry Christmas”?

  55. Brett P Says:

#54, they are cry babies, thats what.

  56. UA Says:

    brett – sounds like it

  57. Carson Says:

#40 I agree, Fred is the only one witty enough to be able to counter this ad. He should do it youtube style just like how he took on Michael Moore (plus he doesn’t have time to get a new ad together and on television before Christmas).

  58. murphy Says:

I don’t have any problem with candidates saying Merry Christmas. I think it’s great.

My problem is that Huckabee seems to having nothing ELSE to say.

  59. Abe Says:

WHY IS HUCKABEE’S WEBSITE ON THE BOTTOM…..

If it isn’t actually promoting him, and just Christmas……..

He is using Christmas as an Ad for himself…..

While saying we shouldn’t be running ads at this time of year…..

    HE’S RUNNING ONE!!!!!!

  60. Michael Reichard Says:

#54, 55, Maybe we should report them to Bill Orielly.

  61. Abe Says:

    Mike (Janis-Faced) Huckabee……

  62. UA Says:

maybe he should have said “happy holidays” instead LOL

  63. UA Says:

    61 ??

  64. Micah Says:

Bubba Jr. using Christ as his stepping stool make me feel so good inside!

  65. Carson Says:

Brett P, please for the sake of all of us, some up Huckabee’s message…I’ve been dieing to hear this

  66. Abe Says:

    UA,

    TWO-FACED……

  67. UA Says:

Two faced – worse than Romney??

  68. Brett P Says:

You know if Mike hadn’t surged, these guys wouldn’t have any thing to say – we are doing a service to Race42008! We are keeping you guys busy!
    Go Mike!
    Donate on Dev 27th! http://www.dec27th.com

  69. UA Says:

I would much rather see an ad wishing me a Merry Christmas right now than another attack ad.

  70. ilfigo Says:

MWS…so you are willing to throw away all Blue states rather than having a conservative get elected?? IDIOTIC!

Why do I have to hear that Romney is being negative when he compares the differences between the two candidates on ISSUES!!!!!!!!!

  71. ilfigo Says:

UA how two-faced? What pro-abortion bill to Romney sign a Governor? What tax increase?

  72. UA Says:

Just wait until the attack ads come after Romney. I’m sure the Rombots will be callin foul then.

  73. UA Says:

oh yeah – Romney calls them “FEES”

  74. Carson Says:

thanks Brett, you’ve answered my question entirely

  75. Psycheout Says:

So, who’s going to run a “Happy Holidays” ad to counter Huckabee’s divisive “Merry Christmas” ad?

  76. Abe Says:

Well, Remember the Huckster can’t run anymore ads now…..

  77. murphy Says:

    UA,

I have no problem with honest ads that highlight differences between candidates. I HOPE that other campaigns follow Romney’s lead in his manner of debating the issues. So far, they have failed to do so.

Negative ads that I don’t like are ads that are dishonest in their portrayal of the facts, or ads that question another candidates’ honesty, integrity, fidelity, etc.

  78. Eric Says:

    #53

I’m almost okay with that idea. Let’s allow Huck to go up and get slaughtered in a general. It will be the perfect send off to the Rove strategy of Republicanism. Then in 2012 the rest of us can have our party back. Whoever we lose in the south and great plains we’ll easily recoup everywhere else.

  79. Brett P Says:

    #65,
good, i have been waiting to do this- you see we have new fangled invention called the Internet that we are using. goto http://www.mikehuckabee.com and click on issues – that should help get you started – we are so proud of this medium, because it helps us to communicate effectively and efficiently. Let me know if you need any help with this Internet thingy… it is a rather new technology.. /sarcasm

    jk
    take care!

  80. Psycheout Says:

Two-faced? How about horse faced? (warning: scary Hillary picture shown on Drudge)

  81. Michael Reichard Says:

#77, So, you don’t like the Rombots on this site?

  82. ilfigo Says:

Huck and his supporters do not want to discuss issues..since the issues demonstrate that Huck is not a conservative. Run on the nice guy personality…despite what any polls say, Huck would get destroyed in a general election when ISSUES will be discussed!

UA…there have been plenty of attacks on Mitt’s records thus far…there was no whining then!

  83. ilfigo Says:

    Micahel explain 81….

  84. Michael Reichard Says:

#80, That picture should have a parental warning!!

  85. Chris Says:

Is this why his supporters want Huckabee as President, so he can wish us empty greetings of the seasons? Think about it, if you donated to Huckabee’s campaign, your money was just spent so that your candidate could wish you a Merry Christmas. Go to church or visit your Aunt if you want Holiday Greetings, but don’t pay a guy to do it, especially when he’s wishing you a Merry Christmas just to get your vote.

  86. ilfigo Says:

Doesn’t Mitt get criticized as a phony, flip-flopper, etc.

I guess saying one is weak on crime because he is willing to pardon convicted murders (some because they found Christ in Jail) or raises taxes 21 times or uses political power to protect his son from the consequences of breaking the law.

  87. Michael Reichard Says:

#83, Explain?…I thought you guys said you were thinkers?

“…dishonest in their portrayal of the facts, or ads that question another candidates’ honesty, integrity, fidelity, etc.”

The previous is exactly what the front page postings and supporters on this site have been doing for a while now.

  88. Michael Reichard Says:

#86, You forgot Mitt’s issue with alternative stances on abortion.

  89. ilfigo Says:

How is that questioning his honesty, integrity, fidelity, etc. by showing voters what HUCK has done when he was an ELECTED OFFICIAL.

Most of the attacks on MITT are occurences 8 years ago, to which he acted the opposite when an ELECTED OFFICIAL!

  90. ilfigo Says:

Michael…what pro-abortion bill or issue did Romney promote or sign as Governor?

  91. ilfigo Says:

Or is all you got was a few comments when he ran against Ted Kennedy (uber liberal) in 1994?

  92. ilfigo Says:

I am curious whether anyone on this site has been an elected official in some capacity or worked closely (outside of campaigns) with an elected official in that capacity?

  93. murphy Says:

    Michael,

If you read #77 clearly, you’d see that I was talking about what kind of negative ads I don’t like. Believe it or not, front page posts to this site are not being aired in Iowa on TV.

What I like to see on blogs is far more elbows…though I still dislike dishonesty.

  94. Carson Says:

#79, Mike said that we could become energy independent in 8 years…why isn’t that on his website? He said that gays should be quarantined…I don’t see that under his healthcare page. He raised taxes 23% while he was governor…that seems to be missing under tax policy. Looks like Huckabee has a few kinks to work out of his website. Lecture him on the internet.

  95. Michael Reichard Says:

Maybe you just don’t now the truth. Check out the Washington Post Fact Cheker on Romney’s stance on abortion.

on #91, That is what I am saying. He changes his positions for political expediency, and you just admitted it.

  96. Iowa Says:

    Let the Rudy SURGE BEGIN!!!!!

New National Poll Results From USA TODAY/Gallup

    GOP: Giuliani 27, Huckabee 16, McCain 14, Thompson 14, Romney 14

    Dems: Clinton 45, Obama 27, Edwards 15

Error margin: 5 points The Page, 3:48 PM

  97. Carson Says:

#92 I was just elected to a position last November why do you ask?

  98. Greg Says:

USA Today/Gallup is close to ARG in terms of accuracy – just ask the others who post here.

  99. Brett P Says:

Of all the Bill O Reilly viewers:
    http://billoreilly.com/surveyarchive?action=viewResults&surveyID=4676

Q: At this point in the campaign, which Republican candidate do you prefer?

    Answer Percent
    Huckabee 43%
    Romney 32%
    Giuliani 19%
    McCain 6%

    out of 40,000 that voted…

  100. Carson Says:

oh man a bill oreilly poll, thats got to be scientific. Everyone should just drop out and bow down to Huck and Oreilly.

  101. murphy Says:

    Michael,

I just don’t see how you can honsetly get all over Romney for changing his Roe v Wade position in 2005, when Huckabee is flipping all over the place several weeks before the primaries.

Unless it’s not changes of position that matter to you, but who was pro-life the longest. Then I get it.

  102. Michael Reichard Says:

#99, That is astounding. Even with the obvious Rudy bias.

  103. ilfigo Says:

Just curious whether these bloggers/political junkies understand how politics actually work.

Compromise is the only way you can get things done. The worst thing about government work is a person who is purely principled on every issue. That person will not be successful in accomplishing anything!!

Michael….”Comments” performed 12 years ago is the best you got!!? Esp. when as Governor he did not follow those previous comments, but actually did more for pro-life than any governor!!

  104. Dave Says:

I liked this ad a lot. In fact, I’ve really liked every ad Huckabee has come out with. If I didn’t have a candidate in the race, and if I didn’t know all of the reasons I oppose Huck’s candidacy: i.e., if I were the average voter, I would have a very positive image of Huck and I would be inclined to vote for him. For the forces of reason and enlightenment, that is the problem for the party; for the country; and for the future of Western Civilization.

  105. ilfigo Says:

    Well said Dave!

  106. joe c Says:

#24 , #36, most scholars do believe Jesus was born in the springtime. Christmas in the Winter was a response to the pagan solstice ceremonies.

i cant take anymore of the huckaboner. he is the worst kind of politician. worse than someone who will say anything to get elected, he will not say anything at all, and hope you just see a little bit of yourself in him.

  107. Michael Reichard Says:

#103, You obviously didn’t read the fact checker.

  108. Illinoisguy Says:

How in the heck ANYONE can construe these ads to be attack ads is beyond me. They are purely for comparison purposes. Anyone who like Hucks positions better, can vote for him.

  109. ilfigo Says:

    Give me something from it…

  110. Greg Says:

Some rumors in Arkansas are circulating that the democrats have some very, very damaging information on Huckabee that they are holding back in hopes that Huckabee gains the nomination. It is apperently moral in nature. Some of you have already alluded to this in other posts. If it turns out that Huckabee had a mistress, by chance, or that he was guilty of bribing somebody, does this hurt him withthe evangelical base, or are they behind Huckabee all they way?

  111. matute Says:

Romney is hurting. At a time when romney needs legitimacy on the immigration issue, Steve King abandons him for Fred and huck gets the minuteman support.

Romney can run all the comparison ads he wants, but if the few remaining endorsements are going to people like fred, in protest of romney’s weak immigration, its going to be tough to turn the tide on these poll numbers.

  112. Lorenzo Says:

I think giving space in his life to honor someone else
was admirable. It showed he was not out to just toot his
own horn. Those who think otherwise have much to learn.

  113. Micah Says:

#111 Say what? Romney’s strongest issue other than the economy is illegal immigration.

  114. ilfigo Says:

Matute…do you know much about the Minutemen…there has been a big division between them and the co-founder who endorsed Huck represents only a small portion, and not the toughest anit-illegal immmigration members.

  115. Micah Says:

#110. It wont matter, he would be toast anyway. He cant run Christmas commercials for an entire year.

  116. QuacknHack Says:

118, by your logic, Bill and Hill’s history of corruption is also off the table for Huck to use.

  117. Greg Says:

Wait, didn’t Romney get multiple big-time endorsements just a few days ago (Governor of Nebraska, NRO, Judge, etc.)

  118. murphy Says:

    matute,

Here’s what Chris Simcox, founder and president of the Minuteman Civil Defense League, said about Gilchrist’s endorsement of Huckabee:

“Jim Gilchrist speaks only for himself – not for my organization and not for the Minuteman movement,” Simcox told WND.

“What raised everybody’s ire was when the media came out and said the Minutemen support Huckabee,” Simcox said. “No, the Minutemen don’t support Huckabee. Jim Gilchrist supports Huckabee. This endorsement threatens to destroy Gilchrist’s credibility and the credibility of his organization forever.”

  119. Axel G. (independent) Says:

#110 I’m sorry, but are you saying that if Hillary gets the dem nomination she is going to attack Huckabee over a rumor of corruption? Have you read “Arkansas Mischief?” Bill and Hillary were basically running a RICO outfit.

In fact, I wonder if Hillary has ever said, “trust me.”

  120. Greg Says:

If you add this rumor to the fact that the democrats are purposely ignoring Huckabee and focusing their attacks on Romney and Giuliani, it starts to make sense. Also odd is the fact that Arkansas democrats who hate HUckabee are unwilling to provide the republican candidates with any information that disparages Huckabee because they are “saving it”.

  121. matute Says:

Lets play a game. Who said this:

“I don’t believe in rounding up 11 million people and forcing them at gunpoint from our country…(T)hose that are here paying taxes and not taking government benefits should begin a process towards application for citizenship, as they would from their home country.”

    a. Mike Huckabee
    b. Fred Thompson
    c. John McCain
    d. Ted Kennedy
    e. Mitt Romney

  122. Greg Says:

121 – I hope it’s Romney that said that. As a Romney guy, this plan make a lot of sense. It’s exactly what he has been saying – make them take their turn in line just like all of the other people legally applying for residency.

  123. matute Says:

Murphy, you have a point, but Gilchrist did endorse Huckabee, not Romney, and Steve King, the wheeler and dealer of all things immigrant related in central and western iowa endorsed Fred Thompson, not Mitt.

The fact is, romney has a mixed record on immigration and that’s why he’s not getting these key endorsements.

    But lets play my game!

  124. TM Says:

    Holy Huckabee!

  125. dubious Says:

Huck’s new ad should be. while we are focusing on christamas you should support God and ddonate to my campaign. Basically that is his message implicity in this ad.

i like Christ, herei s the link to my website. If you lilke him to, vote for me.

    this is seroiusly low.

  126. ilfigo Says:

I say Huckabee…but remember illegal college students get in-state tuition while citizens from neighboring states have to pay THOUSANDS of DOLLARS more for an education!

We should not punish illegals for the decisions of their parents to break the law, but lets punish citizens for their parents who decide to live legally in another state!!

That’s what Jesus would do, right Huck and his supporters?

  127. murphy Says:

    matute,

That you could even attack Romney for immigration, yet support Huckabee on the issue is absolutely unbelievable. I seriously doubt the merit of engaging you in honest discourse.

But why not. Mitt said that quote. He’s never been in favor of deporting 12 million immigrants. He’s always maintained that those who broke the law should go to the back of the line in applying for citizenship.

Contrast that with Huckabee, who criticized illegal immigrant opponents as un-Christian and motivated in part by racism, and who also passionately defended state tax money going to illegal immigrant tuition instead of other Americans.

    e?

Another question. If something you heard on the radio while driving had you start welling up with emotion and tears, would you remember when and where that happened?

Seems to me it would be such a rare occurrence you would remember exactly what you were doing.

Check if Romney’s story about his joy at finding out the Mormons allowed Blacks fits his life’s time line.

You may see similarities to Clinton’s stories remembering Black Church burnings in his youth. Told for effect not nesseserily for truth.

  129. ilfigo Says:

Opinionated…Actually for many Mormons that was a memorable moment, brought change from a Biblical account!

Many LDS people of that age remember where they were when the announcement came out

  130. opinionated Says:

    129

I’m sure. Romney remembers a lot. How he cried. Where it occurred.

“I can remember when, when I heard about the change being made. I was driving home from, I think, it was law school, but I was driving home, going through the Fresh Pond rotary in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I heard it on the radio, and I pulled over and, and literally wept.”"

Was Romney in law school in 1978?

  131. ilfigo Says:

Don’t people remember where they were and what they were doing when other momentous things occurred (death of JFK, the NASA explosion, other personal things, etc.)

  132. opinionated Says:

    131

You bet and for each one, even JFK when I was pretty young, I remember exactly where I was in life.

This was so monumental to Romney he doesn’t remember it occurred while he was a VP at Bain Capital. But he remembers he pulled over to cry and thinks maybe he was in law school.

I’m a little skeptical of his story.

  133. ilfigo Says:

So you are skeptical that he remembers exactly…yet he even states, he thinks, and as you have said, he wasnt in law school. So the problem?

You don’t think it had an y effect on him, simply because he doesn’t exactly remember where he was heading home from…Gotcha!

  134. opinionated Says:

    133

A law student and a VP at a VC firm live different lives. Would drive different cars- even if only significantly different model years.

Me? If I ever pulled over in a car to cry due to a monumental event I would remember the event more clearly. But that’s just me, obviously.

  135. Nusrat Says:

does anyone else notice the floating cross in the background?

  136. dubious Says:

so where is teh floating cross in the commerical. drudge says tehre is a floating corss in the background. this is probably some genius marketing ploy by huck’s people. seroiusly.

drudge has his ad posted. that is going to get some major hits and viewership.

still makes him look stupid though.

  137. dubious Says:

oh my goodness. is see it. how freaking ridiculous. holy cow. he sure is ‘God’s candidaate’ sheesh why not just put a picture of who know you p and say, i am his candidate, vote for me.

this is blasphemous. this guy never ceases to amaze me. first chuck, now the floating cross.

  138. Swint Says:

Man, I still remember the moment I first heard Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullets for Butterfly Wings”.
Sure it was only about 12 years ago, but…

  139. FCOH Says:

130 – if you’re trying to make an issue of the fact that romney graduated prior to 1978, you’re being disingenious. Go back and read Romney’s quote which you so generously provided in your post. He’s reflecting on his memory of the news, and where he was. The greater context of his memory is immaterial.

I imagine that you remember some milestones in your own life from 30 years ago and if pressed would recall the greater context in a manner which isn’t factual, yet you remember where you were and your feelings relative to those events quite clearly.

You’re making a silly and petty argument IMO.

  140. CMartel2 Says:

When did America stop becoming the most powerful nation on earth, the leader of the free world, and a land of innovators and doers and begin electing its leaders based on Christmas cards?

Is Huckabee serious here? He’s running for the highest position of power in the land and sending the equivalent of a network Merry Christmas greeting.
