Romney Grabs Important Endorsement

I’d known about this one for months, but didn’t understand why Kingston was waiting to make this official. A nice pickup for Governor Romney. From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., will endorse former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president on Tuesday, the Romney campaign told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Kingston, of Savannah, joins U.S. Reps. Phil Gingrey and Tom Price as Georgia Republican congressmen choosing Romney in advance of the state’s Feb. 5 presidential primaries.

Kingston, who will formally announce his endorsement from Washington, had been leaning toward Romney for months. “After months of consideration, I have decided to support Mitt Romney for president,” Kingston said in a release that will go out Tuesday. “In a field of worthy candidates, Governor Romney has displayed a deep grasp of the issues, a commitment for change and the character that we need in the next president of the United States.”

That’s a good get for Romney. I was hoping that he wouldn’t get left out of the endorsement game today. Glad to see that so far Huckabee and Rudy are the only two without an endorsement today. ;)

    Thats nice…

but what Romney needs is Iowa, not GA.

    ACT,

    BELIEVE…..

    ACT,
I have gotten some more info on why King didn’t endorse Romney and chose Thompson, and I’ll post it later. I won’t be harsh.

  5. ilfigo Says:

Tommy…was King leaning toward romney at one point?

  6. FCOH Says:

5 – King said it was between Romney and Fred… King’s remarks are interestingly more descriptive of Mitt than of Fred until he said “Fred Thompson”. A reporter asked King afterward if he decided while he was up there making his remarks and King replied something to the effect that ‘you have great intuition’.

If it were possible, King’s endorsement was probably more of a co-endorsement, or a ‘anyone but Huck’ endorsement.

I’m interested to get Tommy’s thoughts on what went down as well… It was an interesting start to the day in the GOP nomination battle.

  7. FCOH Says:

Kingston is a great get for team Mitt. Something that many readers may not pay attention to is the district represented by Kingston. Take a few minutes and see what Kingston’s district might have in common with, hmmm, say, South Carolina, or uhmmm, say, Florida?

  8. ACT Blog Says:

I’ve been feeling a little pessimistic since I found out King picked Thompson. I thought that if Romeny got the endorsement, he would be able to use it to take down Huckabee, win Iowa, and sweep the early states, and then ride the wave to the nomination. I thought that, with the King endorsement, there was a chance the GOP would have a nominee by the middle of January.

Now, I’m left hoping that a post-endorsement bump for Fred takes more from Huckabee than from Romney.

Romney is a great candidate, but he is running out of time in Iowa, and, without Iowa, his path to the nomination is not as clear.

  9. Greg Says:

Do any of you really feel that any one particular endorsement really make a difference? Well, maybe Oprah does, but the political and religious endorsements by themseves are not a huge deal – not until you get a ton of them.

  10. ACT Blog Says:

I believe endorsements can have a big effect – particuarly on undecideds and “soft” supports.

At this point, a swing of two or three % in Iowa could be the difference between a loss and a win, and I believe an endorsement, particularly from a popular and local political figure like King, can have that kind of effect.

  11. Dave Says:

Come Super Tuesday, Georgia will be an important state. This will help, although Romney will hopefully be the consensus pick by then.

  12. JayPe Says:

Greg (9) looking at the polls Oprah had no effect on Obama’s support, in fact polls recorded that “less likely to support” was higher than “more likely to support”.

However, if it gets you in the news, I guess that’s free exposure…

  13. Axel G. (independent) Says:

Obama caught Clinton in NH and cut her lead at least in half in SC following “Oprabamapalooza.” I think she had quite a large effect.

  14. Micah Says:

I am endorsing Romney later today from basement. Stay tuned for more….

  15. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Ilfigo,
I think he was leaning towards Romney
