Bloomania Lives!

As Dave predicted the other day, Mike Huckabee’s rise as the potential GOP nominee means that we need to get ready for a Mike Bloomberg third party bid:

Mayor Bloomberg’s aides have been reaching out to consultants from his past campaigns about whether they are free for a possible 2008 White House bid – including one who helped make his slick mayoral TV spots, The Post has learned.

The moves took place in the past few weeks, as the primaries for the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees are about to begin – and aides have suggested that he will wait and see who the nominees are before making a decision about an independent White House run.

Bloomberg aides reached out to people involved in ad-making – including one who had been involved in creating the mayor’s vaunted TV spots – asking about their availability in the coming months, the sources said.

That Bloomberg aides would look to lock up an ad team dovetails with what the mayor has privately told people about how he would spend up to $1 billion of his own fortune on an independent run, which would be played out mostly on the TV airwaves and through direct mail.

The Post has learned that a New York political activist who worked on the mayor’s last campaign had been planning on joining up with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign team and reached out to discuss it first with Bloomberg’s aides.

Bloomberg’s advisers told the politico he should not sign up with another campaign and instead wait and see what happens with the mayor, the sources said.

The new flurry of activity by Bloomberg’s political aides – led by Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey – comes amid speculation about whether the mayor will make a third-party campaign.

A Bloomberg spokesman declined comment.

Bloomberg himself has insisted he has “no plans” to run for president, even while talking privately about the possibility – and while allowing Sheekey to drum up interest and scope out the logistics of a run.

Sheekey has said publicly that the mayor doesn’t have to make a decision before March 5.

That’s the day after the Texas primary elections – but it’s also the first date that nominating petitions for an independent candidate in the state can be circulated.

If Huckabee is the nominee, we will need a third party choice for fiscal and defense conservative – I will vote for Bloomberg if the huckster manages to make the Republican party into the evangelical Christian party.

  2. Stewart Says:

It’s funny, one of the best arguments for Romney I can think of is that Bloomberg is on record as saying that a Romney v. Clinton matchup would draw him into the race, while a “moderate” like McCain or Rudy probably keeps him out. I know the Hillary folks sweat bullets when you bring up Bloomberg, with his liberal policies all he does is put states like California and Conn. into play for a Republican.

  3. Brendan - Mitt 08 Says:

I also would have to go look at Bloomberg if Huck got the nod.

  4. cwpete Says:

    Wow, here it comes!

Clinton will win for sure.. Scary how history can repeat itself in such a short amount of time. It was the third party ticket of H. Ross Perot that gave the first Clinton the presidency. Bill never even got 50% of the vote! Looks like Hillary will not even need 45% of the vote to get the delegates needed to be president if this materializes.

Come on fellow Republicans. Full package now… We need the full package! Romney & FDT have it, the others do not.

  5. JayPe Says:

3rd party bids do not have a history of success, so I’m surprised he’s going for it.

What must be annoying is that the Dems most controversial candidate (Hillary) is also the one who would make Bloomberg least likely to win NY’s electoral votes. However someone like Obama would take away Bloomberg’s “lets all come together” constituency.

I think his best scenario is Edwards vs Huckabee. Then Bloomberg wins the fiscal conservatives & big business interests easily. He also takes NY, NJ & maybe Conn electoral votes, which slingshots him into contention elsewhere. I can’t see Edwards winning though…

  6. SGS Says:

cwpete (#4) I once said the same thing about Perot on this site, some months ago, and I was told I was wrong. I was even supplied with data. It was one of our data nutties, like MetroRepublican or Matthew Miller (not them, but someone like them). It was some time ago that I could not remember who it was, but I thought you should be careful about the claim that Perot robbed Bush’s and Dole’s chances of becoming the president.

  7. Matthew E. Miller Says:

I wouldn’t vote for Bloomberg for dog-catcher. He’s a bigger nanny-stater then Huckabee, and liberal to the core on social issues. A secular, effeminate, Jew who favors gay marriage isn’t going to compete in the South. Period. I pine for a Bloomberg candidacy. He’s only conservative on education and trade. Everywhere else, he’s indistinguishable from Huckabee, Hillary, or Obama.

  8. Eric Dondero Says:

I don’t see this as serious.

But the Cynthia McKinney candidacy is a reality. She has a YouTube video out formally annoucning her candidacy on the Green ticket.

They’re likely to have 45 state ballot status.

  9. Eric Dondero Says:

JamesB, Bloomberg is a Nanny-Stater/Tax Raiser.

If Huckabee is the Nominee vote Libertarian Party.

Wayne Root is turning into the best candidate the LP has ever had, and the best funded, as well.

  10. SGS Says:

Matthew (#7) But how is he on fiscal and security issues? I mean, if we have a choice between 2 social-socialist, security-none and fiscal-liberal candidates (any Democratic candidate and Huckabee) vs social-socialist, security-moderate, and fiscal-conservative candidate (Bloomberg), won’t we want the lesser evil of three? Again, I am speculating here under the condition of having a gun aimed at my head. Oh, wait, you are social conservative first, then def/fis, right?

  11. SGS Says:

Eric, I was not aware that these two third parties have selected their nominees already. Did not they have to go through primaries in the past to select their nominees?

  12. Eric Says:

Are there dems in the NE and West coast who fear a Bloomberg run the way republicans do?

  13. Kavon W. Nikrad Says:

    Hey Folks,

Please read this to get an idea of who Bloomie is and what I feel would be his impact on the race.

  14. John Galt Says:

I am really thinking that this is going to end up being a mitt thompson ticket. that would kick both hillary and bloombergs behind.

I am starting to like the sound of that romney / thompson 08.

  15. forrestal Says:

Speaking of third party campaigns, what’s the deal with Ron Paul? Is he just using the GOP primary to raise money for an independent campaign? If he keeps up calling Huckabee a fascist for putting a cross in his Christmas ad, he might have to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrkltetQ0×4

[...] Over at Race42008, there is an active and lively debate about “Bloomania”, “Bloombergism”, and “Bloombergery” or whatever witty term they are using to describe people who are looking for a sensible moderate solution in the 2008 Presidential race. There are two things I find interesting about the discussion they are having: [...]
