  1. E Dogg Says:

    What’s the point?

  2. PnGrata Says:

As a card-carrying Mittbot, this was kinda a dumb thing to post.

  3. bethtopaz Says:

    It was great! Thanks, Jason!

  4. MWS Says:

    Are you kidding?????

And we Huckabots can’t even get a first page poster?

  5. bethtopaz Says:

MWS - Huckabee is so yesterday! ;)

  6. econ grad stud Says:

E Dogg, I think this is meant to humanize Romney and show he’s not an uptight rich guy.

  7. Jason Bonham Says:

Why is this dumb? I would appreciate from any of the candidates.

  8. MWS Says:

    “Huckabee is so yesterday!”

Yeah, not nearly as relevant as videos of the Romney’s piano recitals.

Hey! Can we get some old prom photos in here? I’d like to see those!

  9. Abe Says:

Not all the other candidates are involved with their families like this…..

  10. MWS Says:

    Abe,

You don’t think any of these candidates (Rudy excepted) could round up their kids and grab a snow shovel for some “candid” video?

  11. econ grad stud Says:

bethtopaz, if Huckabee is so yesterday why is there a hit piece against him every day?

Apparently Kavon’s abandoned the idea of balance here. That’s his right as the owner but I think he ought to explain why he’s decided to use his blog as an attack dog.

  12. bethtopaz Says:

I think the quality of life Romney has with his wife and his family are the envy of many people.

I know that I would love to have a family like that.

    Believe me, it’s not easy.

It takes a lot of commitment and hard work.

He is simply reaping the benefits of a commitment - long ago - to put his family first.

Don’t underestimate the power of the green monster.

I’m divorced, but what Romney has is what I wanted. Sigh …

  13. MWS Says:

I’d like to see a video of the family interacting with the mansion’s groundkeepers.

  14. MetroRepublican Says:

econ grad stud, if you’ve been perceptive here, Kavon rather admires Huckabee.

  15. Scott Says:

Over-driven Type A who can’t please a hard charging taskmaster God is what this video shows me. The father who has made hundreds of millions can never gives peace to his sons or family. “Maybe the water is running somewhere in this large home and I’m going to make sure it never does and I’m going to make sure my sons are on watch too.”

It’s a little freaky actually. I’ve tried to warm up to this guy and I got close. The missing kid story helped. The missing anchor story of his sons boat…less so. As much as I want to, I can’t warm to this guy even after him crying three times this week.

  16. Patrick Says:

His hair got mussed when he was sledding. Where were his make-up people?

  17. MWS Says:

    Beth,

“I think the quality of life Romney has with his wife and his family are the envy of many people.”

I hate to burst your bubble, but you can’t possible know what goes on in ANY of these candidates’ homes when the doors are locked and the cameras are off.

  18. JA Pruce Says:

I actually think that it was a smart move for Romney to get this video out there for two reasons. First, it emphasizes his strong Mormon family values and secondly, it very subtly reminds the potential voter of the winter olympics which he was instrumental in making a success.

  19. econ grad stud Says:

Metro, if Kavon felt that way it’d be inexplicable to have no Huckabee supporter on the blog and four Romney supporters. If he liked Huckabee you’d expect at least 2 Huckabee guys not 0.

  20. Jason Bonham Says:

    MWS,

I would love to see a video a Huckabee paying taxes on the 60,000 he didn’t bother to report. That would be stellar indeed.

  21. Mark Says:

    Question of the day:

Was Romney caught it a blatant lie?

    http://thephoenix.com/printerfriendlyB.aspx?id=53200

  22. FCOH Says:

MWS - I’d really like to see Huckabee’s lessons on kindness and forgiveness with his son upon return from Scout camp - I’m sure that must have been quite insightful

  23. MWS Says:

If this was just candid home video from the Romney family vault, how did they get multiple camera angles from Mitt’s trip on the sled?

    This was a production, folks.

  24. FCOH Says:

Mark - great question. I’d like to know that myself. Seeing that all of history is not recorded, we’ll never know for sure, will we.

  25. FCOH Says:

MWS - of course it was a production - duh - Mitt is running for POTUS. I must have missed the intro that talked about it being a candid home video

  26. Mark Says:

    #24,

This isn’t “all history.” It is not like the question is of an event held in somebody’s house.

  27. MWS Says:

    JA Pruce,

“First, it emphasizes his strong Mormon family values and secondly, it very subtly reminds the potential voter of the winter olympics which he was instrumental in making a success.”

It reminds me that everything this guy does is engineered and manufactured. Even video of a “sledding trip.” It’s campaign video, folks. C’mon. Don’t be so naive.

  28. MWS Says:

    FCOH,

“First, it emphasizes his strong Mormon family values and secondly, it very subtly reminds the potential voter of the winter olympics which he was instrumental in making a success.”

The implication is that it’s candid. The premise of everyone here swooning over his authenticity as a husband and father is premised on its candidness.

  29. econ grad stud Says:

So the answer to “This appears to be a staged family event” is….
    BASH HUCKABEE!

  30. FCOH Says:

Mark - ok, so is there a specific ‘march’ that would have counted, and others - not so much?

There are plenty of documents from the George Romney archives to demonstrate that he indeed stood with MLK for civil rights.

  31. FCOH Says:

Who’s arguing the point about it being a photo-op? >

  32. MWS Says:

I’ll give Romney this, he didn’t pick wind surfing as his backdrop for a staged campaign video.

  33. Mark Says:

    #30,

I’m not denying that he agreed on civil rights, I’m saying that if he lied about what he supposedly saw, why should we trust him about any other claims?

  34. Emtee Says:

    MWS, is this scripted too?

    http://confessionsofapoliticaljunkie.blogspot.com/2007/11/how-often-do-candidates-do-stuff-like.html

  35. MWS Says:

    Emtee,

I don’t know. That’s the point. I’m not saying Romney is a bad guy. I’m not saying he’s a good guy. What I am saying is that politicians very carefully manufacture their images, and Romney especially so.

Shoot, for all I know, he may donate blood twice a week and drive old women to Bingo every Friday night. But the swooning over an obviously manufactured video is a little silly. The video doesn’t “prove” anything about Romney, except that he went sledding.

  36. MWS Says:

    Emtee,

Regarding your story, it may well be a sincere recounting of a truly gracious and selfless act. But the cynic in me knows that in the era of e-mail and the internet, the “press corps” doesn’t need to be around to stage a great event. There are lots of e-mails like this about Bush. I don’t know if they’re true or not. In fact, as you note, not having the press around “proves” your sincerity. But your link on this site is proof that the “press corps” isn’t needed to get mucho publicity.

Am I being to cynical? Probably. I’m confident that Mitt is a stand up guy in his private life who does lots of stand up things, even when no one is looking. I’m just saying that a story that gets widespread e-mail circulation is not necessarily without strategy.

  37. Eric Says:

    Today: Video of Romney Sledding

Tomorrow: Video of Huck on a treadmill

    Friday: Rudy eats lunch!

  38. econ grad stud Says:

I think we need a video of shaved cat’s behind Alan Keyes rapping on the front page to lighten up this quarreling.

  39. Scott Says:

    Jason,

What a low blow to take on someone over a 60k issue with taxes while your guy makes that much during the time he lays his head on the pillow and wakes up in the morning. If you are representative of Romney’s supporters and campaign workers, you are not doing him any favors.

    Jason Bonham Says:

    MWS,

  40. econ grad stud Says:

    #37 Eric
I’d like to see a video of McCain practicing smiling in the mirror.

  41. E Dogg Says:

34, All these family pics aren’t flattering to Mitt. They look like tabloid journalism. At best they remind me of a shirtless Obama out swimming. At worst, they remind me of stuff you’d see on TMZ.

  42. ThatLibertarianGuy Says:

    This video…is amazing…

…I am now a Rombot. I support Mitt Romney after watching this video.

The Truth of the Sled will set you free, fellow Romnots. Don’t forget it.

I’m saving this video for future reference.

  43. Jason Bonham Says:

    Scott.

The essence of your argument is that is OK for Huckabee to break the law because Romney has lots of money. Do I hear you correctly?

  44. econ grad stud Says:

    Rosebud…!

Hey, I totally agree with that!

  46. Heath Says:

The point he is the man!

  47. Joe Says:

I think the point is that whoever-it-was got awesome air on that first sled run. Dang.

  48. Shawnie Says:

It’s hard to find the following combo: a Huckabee fan that isn’t into religious competition and can just post intelligently. Huckabee = religious derision of others. His campaign attracts all the Sudanese / Teddy Bear like nut jobs. We’re all a little tired of it.

  49. Shawnie Says:

For a front-page writer that is.

  50. Psycheout Says:

This is ironic since the GOP will go downhill just like those sleds if Romney is nominated.

  51. Psycheout Says:

    Rosebud…!

    Very good, EGS!

  52. E Dogg Says:

    Mark and FCOH,
Remember on Meet The Press, Romney justified/clarified the NRA ‘endorsing’ his run for governor by saying there were some people in the NRA who made phone calls for him. Even though the NRA gave Mitt’s democratic opponent a HIGHER grade than Mitt. If you’re willing to play this loose with the facts, ‘marching with MLK’ doesn’t have to be literal at all. Perhaps George Romney ‘marched’ up and down his American Motors assembly line the same time MLK marched in Washington DC.

Romney’s ‘pro-live’ governorship is called into question:
…Interviewed by Tim Russert on “Meet the Press” last Sunday, Romney claimed that he took a “pro-life” position on “every piece of legislation” that came before him. But that is untrue, at least by his present definition of what constitutes “life.”…
…”Flip, flop, flip,” editorialized the Boston Herald, on December 9, 2005. “Yes, Gov. Mitt Romney has now executed an Olympic-caliber double flip-flop with a gold medal-performance twist-and-a-half on the issue of emergency contraception.”

    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2007/12/mitt_romneys_flip_flop_flip.html

  53. FCOH Says:

Scott - do you really believe this drivel?

“What a low blow to take on someone over a 60k issue with taxes while your guy makes that much during the time he lays his head on the pillow and wakes up in the morning. If you are representative of Romney’s supporters and campaign workers, you are not doing him any favors.”

How about loading up the UHaul with $70,000 of furniture from the Governor’s mansion? And then losing the court battle and claiming it was a ‘misunderstanding’ and had to give it back.

How about conveniently skirting the parole process for a GOP junkie who had 4 DWI convictions, only to happen to make a number of charitable donations which suddenly landed his parole application on the top of the pile and handled in an unconventional manner? Oh, and after he gets out he gets nailed again on DWI. Thanks Huck for repeatedly keeping the interest of your buddies above the interest of the residents of AR.

Should we talk about the wedding gift registry, 30 years after their marriage? Hmm.. and to say that this was just some of his wife’s church friends who wanted to do something nice for them. Sure, it has nothing to do with AR law which expressly allows wedding gifts above $100 to be just fine.

And we sure don’t want to talk about the lapses in judgement in reviewing the parole applications of over 8,700 convicted criminals and granting 1,033 of those. I know, I know, most of these were innocent little grandma’s who had a drug conviction as a jouvie and now want to get on with their lives. I suppose the 12 convicted murderers and countless rapists accidently got mixed in. I’m sure it has nothing to do with Mike Huckabee’s uncanny ability to discern the soul of these criminals after they had been born again while in jail.

But, let’s not talk about these ethical lapses and instead pull out the class-envy and class-warfare card because it appeals to the base ‘unfairness’ in our society. Good luck with that argument.

  54. Illinoisguy Says:

I think its a great post. It humanizes Mitt and helps everyone get to know him better. What’s wrong with that? I would welcome this kind of thing from the other candidates. :)

  55. Illinoisguy Says:

If he can’t stand to have the water running, think how much he can do for our federal deficit? Can you say hundreds of billions? :) This guy is simply amazing!

  56. Scott Says:

    43.
“The essence of your argument is that is OK for Huckabee to break the law because Romney has lots of money. Do I hear you correctly?”

No, of course not. The essence of what I was saying is that charge coming from a surrogate for Romney appears to be petty over such a trivial amount of money. It helps to highlight that Mitt was born into wealth and Huckabee was a poor guy from Hope. The charge may be valid. I have no idea. However, that charge coming from the Romney campaign seems petty and just highlights your guy was born into wealth, is spending millions of his money on his campaign and probably makes that much after a night of sleep.

    53. I’m not a Huckabee supporter. There are some ethical concerns to be sure.

  57. K Dub Says:

    MEMO: To all Romney dealers

Romney v3.7 has significant upgrades over previous models. Included in the latest version is the ability to emote, laugh, and even cry on demand! Of course, all previous pivot and pander features are still fully functional. We’ve included footage of the latest version being field tested. As this video shows, this is the most life-like Romney yet!

  58. FCOH Says:

56 - I’d suggest you do a little more research into Romney’s successes, achievements, and maybe even look into what he did with being ‘born into wealth’ before spouting off with the class-warfare again. And to dismiss ethically questionable practices such as not reporting significant income because another candidate has had a more financially successful private career is ‘petty’.

The fact remains that Mitt has consistently been neck and neck as a top fundraiser in this campaign - narrowly eclipsed by Rudy. All of Mitt’s own contributions have been IN ADDITION to the support he’s been able to garner from supporters. I happen to like seeing a candidate who is both willing and capable of putting some skin in the game and not relying completely on a continued hand-out. It also gives Mitt the ability to run things his way and not feel beholden to fundraisers interests.

Please save your animosity of success and wealth for Bloomberg when he tosses his $2 billion into the mix.

  59. Scott Says:

    58. I’m aware of Romney’s successes and considerable talents and I don’t have animosity for success or wealth. As I pointed out earlier, the charge may be valid. I have no idea. However, I don’t think it’s wise for someone connected to the Romney campaign make that charge over such a small amount of money in the scheme of things. It creates a David and Goliath narrative between Huckabee and Romney heading into Iowa.

  60. MarkG Says:

Rombots! May we have your attention?

As we know, you guys were recently yelping about blatant Christian pandering on the part of Huckabee.

Truth is, this video merely panders to Mormon true believers, pimping the father figure in accordance with the faith. It’s an overt overture to LDSers in order to fanaticize them further. It’s meant as a slap in the face to non-Mormons everywhere in the universe.

    Stop it, already!!

In terms of content, though, it’s interesting that the portrayed Mr. Hard Work and Big Family has to hire outside help to manicure his mansion grounds. Very outside, on many occasions. Or maybe the Guatemalans refuse to work at the high altitudes of Mitt’s many alpine châteaux?

  61. MWS Says:

    #57.

    LOL!!!

  62. James Boulder Says:

    Jason,
Huckabee didn’t fail to report the incomce to the IRS, he did pay taxes on it. It was an omission on an ethics report that you are referring to and he was not found to have done anything illegal. This is the same type of attack that the Romney campaign has launched on Huckabee. Half truths and misleading headlines. This smacks of desperation and it is wearing old. I guess if your guy can buy the election he just decides to make up stuff and mislead
voters. I think your comment about Huckabee and the $60,000 is one shining example of this type of activity.

  63. Sean Says:

#60 - The commentary is interesting. Small-minded, but interesting. I’ve found some policy decisions and judgments by a number of candidates, including Huckabee and Giuliani and McCain and Romney, to be ones that I profoundly disagree with, and even some of their personal comments or lapses. I don’t, however, find it necessary to constantly impugn their genuineness or character. The need to do so only calls attention to how mean, petty, and small-minded some can be.

Romney is a 60-year old man with five grown sons who live away in other parts of the country, a wife with MS, and he is constantly on the road. He doesn’t exactly have time to mow the lawn a lot right now, and who cares if he hires someone to help take care of the property? If he words hard, he gets slammed as a “Type A robot” and if he hires someone else, he gets slammed as a wealthy elitist? Guy can’t win, not because there’s anything wrong with him, but because it’s easy for Internet posters to vent petty and small-minded drivel like this on such boards.

  64. ThatLibertarianGuy Says:

I love this video so much.
