As promised, your latest Endorsement Chart update!
Here’s the usual disclaimer: this is only one way from many options of tracking the endorsements candidates receive. I choose not to put endorsements from groups like the “Iowa Conservative Alliance For Ending Abortions on Tuesdays” for a number of reasons. For this reason, this chart is not the be all, end all to candidate endorsements – but hopefully it is a useful tool for you.
The tiers are as follows:
And as always, any omissions are purely accidental. Provide a link for me if I missed one and I will add it to the chart!

The sad irony is for everyone someone endorses, their ‘followers’ end up liking Huckabee. It ends up so that they will call their ‘leader’ and wonder why in the world they are not supporting Huck.
Sad, sad, sad.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
AWESOME Matt! – Thanks for the hard work!!
I love that Huckabee has 4 total!! Nice! Imagine a Romney/Thompson ticket. That would be a TON of support for that ticket.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
This list makes the Huckabee surge all the more impressive.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
Only complaint that I can see is that you left Steve King off of Fred’s list
December 28th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
Colin,
Spot on!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
And I think we have more endorsements from third tier, although I’m not positive, but I’d have to dig around to find them. I don’t think I paid much attention to them…
Paul Presslar and Morton Blackwell I think both serve (actually i’m sure Blackwell is one), but I can’t remember.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
Yea, Steve King’s a big one. Do you think it would be worth including massive nationally recognized PAC organizations or leaders like Pat Robertson, NRLC, NRA, Club for Growth, etc? Or would that make this whole tihng way too complicated…
December 28th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
Another one,
John Linder withdrew his endorsement of Romney and endorsed Huckabee.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Thanks, Tommy, for being fair.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
Surprise surprise Romney has the most endorsements, that shows you that Huckabee’s peers don’t think much of him as POTUS. It also goes to show you that most of his support are from “sheep” that can’t think for themselves and will just listen to whatever their pastor, preacher or evangelical leader tells them to do.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
John S.,
I, personally, have never heard who my pastor supports. Thanks for offending me!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:13 pm
BTW, John S.,
Check out Kevin Tracy for proof positive that there is non-evangelical support for Huck.
http://www.ktracy.com/
December 28th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
Doug,
Well if you support Huckabee then you’ve got more problems than me offending you. You’re welcome though
December 28th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
#13,
Just curious, who do you support? I don’t want to assume something about you if it is not true. Just so I don’t risk offending you.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Matt C, as always, your effort on this is greatly appreciated!!!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
The best man for the job Mitt Romney!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
MattC.,
Here’s the link where John Linder endorsed Huckabee
http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/shared-blogs/ajc/politicalinsider/entries/2007/12/10/heads_up_john_linder_about_to.html
December 28th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
#13,
So I will assume then you thought certain things about certain topics just 18 months ago, but now you feel the completely opposite way. Throughout your life you have had certain opinions and thoughts, but have jettisoned them when it became uncomfortable or unpopular.
Oh, also, I will assume that you have ’seen’ things that are not really there.
One more, I will assume you are prone to exaggeration, you varmint-hunter, you.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Actually, here’s the official statement:
http://www.johnlinder.com/news_details.asp?id=15
December 28th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Just like your man Huckabee did yesterday when he changed his stance on immigration. All I’m saying is your guy has 4 of his peers of which one is from Arkansas. Doesn’t look like he’s peers respect him very much.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Thank goodness we have not an oligarchy, but a republic. Power to the people!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
#20 – They may respect him, but lack of endorsements shows a lack of belief that Huckabee can win.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
Tommy,
I looked around and found that Linder actually changed his endorsement first from Romney to Thompson and then to Huckabee now…
http://www.peachpundit.com/2007/12/12/more-on-the-linder-endorsement-of-huckabee/
I think you and I can both say good riddance to that endorsement flip-flopper!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
The point is, regardless of what the Pat Robertsons and Rick Perrys are saying, the average Republicans are taking to Huckabee. So maybe it’s not that the average guys are sheep (which would certainly be the case if they were all marching in lockstep with their supposed “leaders”), but rather that the “leaders” are out of touch with what average Americans want and like.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:35 pm
Doug,
I will assume that whenver you don’t know something you blurt out you did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:37 pm
MattC.,
Amen to that!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
Virginia has a Democrat Governor, but the very popular Republican LT. Governor, Bill Bolling, Is the Chairman of Mitt Romney’s campaign in Virginia.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
Golly gee, seems as if the Huck supporters are rather bitter today! Can’t figure why, after all they finished 6th on the Judicial Watch list, right in their with Hillary baby!!!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
Thanks matt for putting up the chart. I think that while no single endorsement is all that important, a plethora of them tends to show some momentum.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Matt C,
Former Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer endorsed Huckabee just a few days ago:
http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Newsroom.PressRelease&ID=460
December 28th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Yeah after that gaffe yesterday with Bhutto, and then flipped on his stance on immigration, sounds like Abe is a prophet. The Huck a bust is coming!!
December 28th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
Actually, I think I’ll just go with who Alaska representative Don Young likes. That guy has a finger on what is important to Republicans. Who is he supporting again?
Of course when Ted Stevens endorses, I’ll have to move to that candidate as well.
December 28th, 2007 at 1:16 pm
Larry Craig endorsed someone once, too.
December 28th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Matt: here is a link to more huckabee endorsements:
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/2008-presidential-candidates/endorsements/candidates/mike-huckabee/
December 28th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
#33 – Yeah, it was Romney.
Goes to show that even a broken clock is right twice a day. At he has at least an ounce of sense in his whacked out brain to know enough to support Romney.
December 28th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
ahhh typo. “At least he has an ounce . . .”
December 28th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
found another list of huckabee endorsements (some are already on the list above, I just copied and pasted the list):
United States Congressman John Boozman of Arkansas [84]
United States Congressman Bob Inglis of South Carolina [85]

Virginia House of Delegates Speaker, William J. Howell [105]
Former Governor of South Carolina, David Beasley [106]
December 28th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
UA, those are state congressmen and women, which you will note are not included in anyone’s totals in the chart. That used to be Tier 4, but it got too complicated keeping track of all of them, so we changed it to majority of legislators instead.
For those early state endorsements compiled in one easy place, check out this earlier R4′08 post from October 30.
December 28th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
hawthr,
Holy cow — how did I miss Geringer’s endorsement of Huckabee? I live in WY for Pete’s sakes! I’ll get it added to the list – thanks.
December 28th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
I think it just goes to prove that there are SO MANY politicans that it does not really matter whom they choose to endorse.
December 28th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
No, it just goes to prove that your man had so little support, you had to go looking for another list, one that didn’t qualify for the posted thread for anyone.
While you’re searching for answers, how do you explain the “F” grade the CATO institute gave Huckabee, showing him 46th out of the 50 Governors? You guys come on here and have all kinds of personal opinions you derive from internet postings of your choice. I’d like to hear the Huckabee supporter’s response. Let me guess, you don’t like the CATO organization. Maybe you have a nick name for them like the ‘club for greed’ you like for the Club for Growth?
http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa581.pdf
December 28th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
ROFLMAO!!!
December 28th, 2007 at 1:46 pm
Illinoisguy,
Just a warning, some Romney supporters were all bashing the CATO ratings for a good while (and bashing me too) for using them one time last spring.
December 28th, 2007 at 1:50 pm
Doug (#21), I could not make a head out of your comments if you are for Huckabee or not, or if you were in jeer. But I would be very surprised if you could claim Huckabee to be the man to
Huckabee WANTS to use government to solve our proverty!!! That’s not power to the people! If you are truly a Huckster, please help me understand how he would get the power back to the people?
December 28th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Why would they have done that? Mitt finished 12th while Governing the most liberal state.
December 28th, 2007 at 2:06 pm
MattC – I would like to see the breakdown of IA and NH state politicians. I don’t know that any other states really matter at this point but I think IA and NH are important. You have already told us who has the majority in SC.
Great work, once again, on this chart.
December 28th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
Thanks for the breakdown.
I think it shows more that politicians don’t view Huckabee as a man who CAN’T get the job done. Winning is irrelevant if the candidate ends up being a fiasco for the party. Look at the Democrats in Congress; who only won because republicans aren’t afraid to vote their own bums out of office.
Huckabee would be a disaster for this country. We are the most powerful country on the earth, who can’t afford to have a semi-competent backwoods governor whose only credential in foreign policy is that he has a ‘theology’ degree that will help him deal with Muslims better.
December 28th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
How can such a bad candidate as Huckabee be doing so well? According to some analysis of the official Huckabee blog, people support Huckabee for the following reasons:
29% To defeat the pundits and elitists (power to the people, etc.)
27% He is God’s candidate (only true Christian, strong faith, etc.)
22% To defeat Romney (to stop Romney’s evil, etc.)
6% To enact the Fair Tax
4% To defeat Giuliani and MacCain
4% He is positive (he is not divisive, etc.)
2% To defeat the rich
Scary stuff, huh? The source is:
http://redyankee.blogspot.com/2007/12/why-do-people-support-huckabee.html
December 28th, 2007 at 3:06 pm
You are missing a lot of Huckabee endorsements. A whole lot.
December 28th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
As a category, the 3rd-tier endorsements are by far and away the most significant. They are the most qualified to pick a winning candidate, have the most influence in selecting super-delegates, and are the most intimately connected with big contributors. It’s not surprising that Romney has the edge here over Huckabee….by a margin of 32 to ZERO.
December 28th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Matt C,
SC US Rep Inglis for Huckabee
December 28th, 2007 at 10:14 pm
Does the list leave out all of the legal endorsements that Rudy has received from the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and (Reagan) White House staff?

There are a couple more Tier Two endorsements for Rudy:
Ex-US Rep Nancy Johnson (R-CT)
Ex-US Rep Anne Northup (R-KY)
I will provide the links in my next comment.

#49 James Boulder: What endorsements for Huck are missing that meet the Tier One/Two/Three/Four criteria? Bob Inglis, who has already been mentioned, and Ex-US Rep Bill Cobey (R-NC) (http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Newsroom.PressRelease&ID=304) are the only ones I can find.
I went through the list of press releases on Huck’s web site and didn’t see any other mentions of endorsements by current or former governors, U.S. Senators, or U.S. representatives besides Inglis, Cobey, and the ones Matt C already had.
December 29th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
1 more Tier Two endorsements for Hunter.
Former US Sen Bob Smith (R-NH)

Trent Lott retired on Dec 18 and Dennis Hastert retired Nov 26. I wonder if they shouldn’t be moved to “Tier 2″ endorsements for McCain and Romney respectively. Also, I can’t find a link but I’m pretty certain that Walter Jones (R-NC) has endorsed Ron Paul giving him a total of (let me check my math…) one Tier 1 endorsement.
December 31st, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Also, I notice the Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) retired in January 2007. He could probably be moved to Tier 2 as well.
