Thompson Picks Up More IA Endorsements

Fred Thompson’s Campaign Picking Up Key Iowa Conservatives

Key Undecided Iowa Conservatives Start Move Toward Thompson: Fred Thompson Receives the Endorsement of Iowa State Rep. Gary Worthan

A late movement by Iowa conservatives toward the Fred Thompson campaign was spotlighted by today’s announcement that noted Iowa conservative leader, State Representative Gary Worthan, had endorsed the former Senator from Tennessee.

Many Iowa conservatives have been undecided and Worthan’s endorsement was an important one for the Thompson campaign, which got a late start in the 2008 election process.

“Gary Worthan was one of the key Iowa conservatives that had been undecided.” stated Bob Haus, Thompson’s Iowa Executive Director. “Gary’s endorsement is one we were hoping to pick up in these days leading up to the Iowa Caucuses. We’re humbled to get it.”

Haus stated that the campaign expects to pick up more endorsements from Iowa conservatives. Conservative support has been encouraging and “the movement on the ground here seems to be toward Fred Thompson.”

“Events overseas the last few days have helped highlight Senator Thompson’s foreign policy experience. While some of the other candidates, including the front-runners, seem a little perplexed, Senator Thompson’s steadiness in his statements and steel in his spine has helped swing some key support to our campaign.”

” We’ll have some more announcements a little later on. We expect more undecided Iowa conservatives to gravitate our way over the next week.”

Followed up by Committee member Loras Schulte:

To all my friends,

First, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, but for those of you who live in Iowa , I need not tell you that in little more than a handful of days … we will make a monumental decision at our Caucuses: who leaves Iowa with the chance to gain their Party’s nomination for President, and all that means to the future of our Country. Because I sit on RPI’s State Central Committee, I have remained neutral in this year’s Caucus process, but now I feel compelled to join with the likes of: Cong. Steve King, Bill Sailer and what appears to be the entire Iowa leadership team of Tom Tancredo, Representatives Kraig Paulsen, Jeff Kaufmann and Sandy Greiner, and scores of other notable Iowa Republicans in endorsing the candidacy of Senator Fred Thompson.

While he’s gaining speed, I am still having a very hard time seeing Thmpson finishing any higher than third. With less than a week to go, I can’t help but think that this is far too litte, far too late.

  2. Dave Says:

The better Fred does in Iowa, the better. That said, an endorsement by a state representative even less than a week before the caucuses is still inconsequential.

  3. FCOH Says:

Nice pickup by Fred. A 3rd place finish for Fred would be a dream come true.

  4. MWS Says:

I haven’t seen this poll up here, but Quad City Times poll has Huck up 7 in Iowa.

Here’s a great article/discussion about Huckabee’s “660″ illegal Pakistani’s. I’m sure there’s a cute story in here somewhere that Mike will share with us in the coming day or two - I cant wait. What’s this 4-5 gaffe’s in 24 hours? Some petty, but this one is just outright wrong and the fact that he continues to stand by it is really amazing.

    HUCK’S PAKISTANI IMMIGRATION NUMBERS
    http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/12/28/537385.aspx

…Later in the call, Pinkerton said that his article referenced Finley’s, meaning that Finley’s March 2006 article is the source of the misleading information. Although that number is included in the Denver Post’s article in association with Pakistani immigrants, it is in reference to “non-Mexican migrants caught entering the United States illegally in fiscal years 2002 to 2005,â€? not the number that entered last year.

A spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that the number of illegal Pakistani immigrants caught in FY 2007 falls behind both the Philippines and China when it comes to countries outside the Western Hemisphere. In FY 2007, ICE reported catching 435 Pakistanis, 766 Chinese, 521 Filipinos and 600 Indians.

In fact, NBC’s Michael Kosnar reports that according to officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security, illegal Pakistani immigrants aren’t even in the list of top 25 nationalities of immigrants who cross the border illegally.

According to estimates released by the Department of Homeland Security in August, the largest ethnic group of illegal immigrants currently living in the U.S. who are not originally from the western hemisphere — i.e. not from “immediately south of the borderâ€? — are Indians. There are an estimated 270,000 illegal Indian nationals residing in the U.S. as of January 2007, which is an increase of 125 percent over the same estimates in 2000.

    Huckabee/Powell

    Huckabee/Petraeus

    Problem solved.

  10. FCOH Says:

mac - Powell won’t work - he’s too old to carry the torch after 8 years - he’d be 79-80. Petraeus is better suited age wise, he’d be 64, but that’s all pie in the sky and doesn’t matter because Huckabee’s political aspirations won’t survive the next 2 months.

  11. Illinoisguy Says:

If Huckabee wins Iowa, it just helps keep Rudy alive. That’s why Rudy nor Rudy’s people have done nothing to counter Huckabee at this time. As has been stated many times, all of the candidates want Huckabee to beat Romney, and have acted accordingly, with the possible exception of Fred. I’ve seen Fred come down on Huckabee pretty solid on tv. But if Mike wins Iowa, you can bet that everyone will come out strong against him to stop any momentum. He’s going to be dead either way because he’s way too weak of a candidate to survive once the other candidates kick in to counter his success.

  12. mac Says:

Powell is the same age as McCain (and Reagan when he was in office). If age becomes an issue he could step down after a few years and let a young gun slide into the VP slot.

  13. bill-tb Says:

Iowa is a caucus not a vote. The State Reps, or their agents, often lead major caucii.

Chcuklebee isn’t ready for prime time, much less a job that requires world responsibility. The air will be out of his media pumped balloon RSN.
