BREAKING? A Major Presidential Candidate to Be “Taken Down” Monday in New Hampshire

from Joe Gandelman:

For the second time we’ve gotten an email that says it comes from a spokesman for Revelation Press about a major announcement that’ll be made in Washington on MONDAY about a candidate running in the New Hampshire primary..one DAY before the vote there – seemingly a CLASSIC case of leveling an eleventh-hour charge so a candidate doesn’t fully have time to answer it.

Rick Moran thinks it will be aimed at McCain because of the term “swift boating” in the email, which implies a military angle, ala Kerry in 2004. It’s possible, but I think it might have to do with a different candidate.

For the record, I don’t approve of “swiftboating” anyone’s military service, be it democrat or republican.

But keep your eyes peeled for something that doesn’t pass the smell test.

UPDATE:

moneyblogs.com has more.

Darryl Toor’s (the contact person for the group) biography:

Daryl Toor: As a former investigative journalist with CBS, I’ve been a PR pro for more than 20 years, focusing on high-tech and start-ups, IR and crisis PR. I’m an expert in media relations and the “art of the pitch,” and in search engine optimization. I’m the author of one PR book, and – with Ned – I’m working on another.

Who are these guys “Revelation Press”? Have not heard of them.

  2. Hillaryno! Says:

Here is that letter from that Evangelical Christian from Arkansas that everyone is talking about. It is really good and may surprise you (sorry if this has already been posted):

    Romney on H&C tonight: http://www.youdecide2008.com/2008/01/02/video-romney-on-hannity-colmes-live-from-iowa/

  4. Jonathan Says:

I hope they don’t follow through with this. Each candidate should be weighed on their merits, not on last-minute attacks by unknown PACS

  5. Thomas Alan Says:

It better be a real bombshell. If it’s a weak attack it would just make Sen. McCain a victim (which he revels in being, see S. Carolina 2000).

  6. QuacknHack Says:

We shouldn’t use the term “swiftboating” as a pejoritive for a negative attack. That is buying into the liberal bs about the swiftboat adds.

What worked about the swiftboat add in 2004 was that is showed John Kerry himself calling American soldiers war criminals.

  7. Tommy Oliver Says:

I’m about to do an update. Daryl Toor is a former investigative reporter for CBS

  8. Brian Says:

Judging by Joe Carter’s blog, I’m assuming this will be on Romney, not McCain, but anyone outside of those two could be fairly irrelevant (at least to the NH primary).

  9. Patrick Says:

    Thomas Alan,

You don’t think having push-pollers claim you fathered an illegitimate inter-racial child to voters in South Carolina is bad?

This kind of behavior, whether by Bush activists in SC in 2000, or anonymous PACs in NH now, is despicable. This is what is wrong with politics today, and that’s why we need an honest American patriot like John McCain in the White House.

  10. Patrick Says:

    8,

Do you have a link to that you could share?

  11. MetroRepublican Says:

Maybe it will finally be revealed that Romney’s own PAC did the anti-Mormon push-polling.

  12. Brian Says:

The problem with 11th hour attacks is that they don’t reach the saturation point that is intended unless you’ve got nuclear info to unleash on your opponent… The wise move would be to release it late tomorrow.

  13. steve Says:

Keep in mind it could be a demecrat as well.

  14. Brian Says:

10-www.evangelicaloutpost.com- it’s in his most recent post about working with the Huckabee campaign

  15. MetroRepublican Says:

Whatever it is, it would have more impact if it were done on Friday. I would be offended if I were a NH voter and they didn’t do it in time for the facts to be sorted out.

Bad, yes. The reason he lost, no.

Sen. McCain lost S. Carolina because he shot himself in the foot a dozen times on the way.

  19. Jonathan Says:

#17 agreed, two simple words: Confederate Flag

  20. Patrick Says:

Either way, no matter who it’s about, if it’s intended just to slander a candidate without giving them any time to defend themselves, it’s deplorable.

And what’s this with the guy who ran “Vietnam Vets against Kerry” also running “Vietnam Vets against McCain”? Does he just have a thing against other veterans from Vietnam? And for the record, while I think that Kerry overplayed his war experience, and sold out his comrades for political gain when he returned and testified before Congress, I do not question his personal conduct while he was there. I’m sure he earned his awards and decorations – just as I’m sure that John McCain wasn’t brainwashed or blackmailed as a POW. If he was, he wouldn’t have been held and tortured for nearly six years.

  21. bjalder26 Says:

I’m not saying I agree with the links I’m providing; I just think we should all have this information sooner, rather than last minute. I don’t like how this is coming out at the last minute. So start researching guys, let’s get to the bottom of this.

  22. Tommy Oliver Says:

Yea. I know what Moran’s theory is. I have a different theory though. I don’t think this has to do with McCain for different reasons. The vietnamvets against mccain isn’t that relevent of a group.

  23. Brian Says:

I can’t find anything worthwhile on Revelation Press on Google. Sounds like a Mom & Pop outfit.

  24. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Brian,
    Read the above update

  25. Brian Says:

What if this is just a bunch of hype for someone to try and sell a book?

  26. Brian Says:

thx Tommy. OT- I just emailed your Fred blog with a question about him I need help with. Thanks.

  27. Jared Says:

Seems like a cheap stunt to sell more books. Worthless.

  28. JB Says:

you’d think if it was Mike or Mitt they hit them before Iowa; seems like if this is credible news that McCain would be the logical one to ‘hit’ just prior to NH since that’s where he is expected to do well.

  29. marK Says:

I have to say that I am underwhelmed. It sounds mainly like someone hoping to sell a book.

  30. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Brian,
Very true, but it doesn’t give anyone time to respond. I don’t think its mccain

  31. Erik Says:

#22 Tommy, who do you think it has to do with?

  32. wisconsin cheese Says:

It’s not McCain. It talks about the author knowing the candidate since their college days. McCain didn’t go to college; he went to the naval academy.

  33. Eric Dondero Says:

Could be Ron Paul. There’s some stuff coming out on his ties to some pretty far-out groups. And also on some past financial scandals for his Presidential campaigns in the late 1980s and 90s.

One of his top aides even went to jail for 6 months for embezzlement of over $140,000.

I have a feeling the media has finally dug deep into the whole affair, as well as the questions raised from his brief 1992 run, when nearly $100,000 was raised, but not spent.

  34. Brian Says:

Tommy- do you think it is probably a Democrat?

  35. ajay Says:

I doubt it’s against McCain. If it was – why wouldn’t it have come out in 2000?

  36. alaska jake Says:

Not that I think we should devote any time to this topic ot the worthless guy promoting this announcement, but do we even know that it’s a hit on a Republican candidate?

  37. MWS Says:

On Monday it will be revealed that Romney is a closet Southern Baptist. After being outed, he will have to send millions in refund checks back to Utah.

    ;-)

  38. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Brian,
    No- a republican

    Brian,
email perico1979@gmail.com – my email for writing and thompson.

    I don’t get the blog email…

  39. steve Says:

If its not McCain or Romney – who cares?

If it was Romney why wait tell after Iowa.

  40. jrcutler Says:

    MWS,
“On Monday it will be revealed that Romney is a closet Southern Baptist. After being outed, he will have to send millions in refund checks back to Utah.”

Already starting to pout? I don’t want to see the mood you are going to be in tomorrow.

  41. MWS Says:

    From the link:

“Next Monday, the truth will be revealed when a book that literally gives “chapter and verse” about this candidate’s less-than-candid candor ”

“Less than candid candor” makes me think it is the guy who invented the Straight Talk Express. But it sounds like a bunch of hype to me.

  42. jim Says:

can someone clarify how the GOP caucus works. I know in the dem caucus you have to line up and publicly support the guy in the room and there’s that 15% rule. I heard the GOP caucus is different in that yes you do gather and discuss but at when it comes time to vote you drop your ballot in the box just and vote secretly. is that right?

As for this story, if it was that big, why would someone wait till so late to get it out. There’ll barely be any time for it to register.

  43. MWS Says:

    jim,

yes, that’s right, as I understand it.

  44. jrcutler Says:

By the way, MWS, good joke, I was just giving you a hard time.

  45. MWS Says:

    jrcutler,

Thanks. No doubt one of us will be crying in our beer tomorrow night.

  46. Thomas Alan Says:

    #42

The GOP caucus is really just a glorified straw poll. 1 person, 1 vote.

  47. BarkTwiggs Says:

Has there been dirt that hasn’t been uncovered yet on Giuliani? He seems the most likely to have a hit piece done on him. I’ve read most of the McCain conspiracy theories, and they are pretty much only theories. Huckabee will be irrelevant soon, so why bother attacking him. It’ll pretty hard to find something damning against Romney, since he’s been pretty well vetted. Are we sure this isn’t against a Dem?

  48. SDGOP Says:

There is plenty to attack mccain on, but his war record should be off limits. Thats just classless.

  49. Michael Reichard Says:

I bet it will be Romney.

  50. MWS Says:

    Bark,

Guiliani doesn’t make sense to me. He’s not really competitive in NH. If it were Huck, it would have to be before Iowa. Personally, I think it sounds like a bunch of hype from someone who either has a vendetta, or wants to sell books (or both). What better why to get free publicity than to throw out a teaser and let the frenzy build.

  51. Michael Reichard Says:

Whoever the victim is, thats pretty sorry to release info at the last minute.

  52. MWS Says:

    Tommy,

I’m not familiar with the people you link. Are they considered first tier news outlets, ordinary bloggers, rumor mongers, fringe internet journalists?

I’m just wondering if this is considered a real news item to the MSM or if it only lives on the fringes.

  53. FCOH Says:

It’s Romney – he’s starting to crack and this blockbuster book to be revealed on Mon blows the top off his campaign.

Explosive information could rock the primaries: http://gretawire.foxnews.com/2008/01/01/lets-hope-two-mrs-romneys-dont-read-gretawire/

It does finally expose a side of the Romney’s that I’ve been blocking out of my mind. I see people post crazy things about them from time to time and I just dismiss it, but did you notice how he described what type of pie it was? You could sense the careful planning in his reply and then he called it simply a ‘lemon’ pie. Anyone who watches this guy exposed in that video knows that it wasn’t a ‘lemon’ pie – it was a ‘lemon meringue’ pie. He probably actually believes it himself and thinks that the dumb electorate won’t catch on and reveal him for what he is. He outright lied TWO TIMES about that pie – twice calling it ‘lemon’. This is clear evidence of a pattern of behavior that we need to seriously question when electing a nominee. I welcome this tell-all book that will FINALLY expose the truth about lemon pie.

  54. SDGOP Says:

Has anyone considered it might be a democrat?(Obama perhaps)?

  55. bjalder26 Says:

It’s against McCain, and I think this guy’s the author.

    http://www.usvetdsp.com/kiley_court.htm

  56. Bill Says:

FCOH – Very Well analysis of Mitt’s outright lie on the pie…Sounds like a Tommy Oliver Post on Romney..very substantive. Tommy, can you post again on the pie contraversy please!

  57. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Not a democrat.

    MWS.
Rick moran and Joe Gandelman are very viable information outlets.

  58. Erik Says:

Tommy, why not McCain? From what I have read if Jerry Kiley is the author that would make sense. What are you holding back?

  59. KnightHawk Says:

Sounds like last minute BS to me no matter who it’s on.

  60. Right Wing Nut House » McCAIN TO BE BLINDSIDED IN NEW HAMPSHIRE ON MONDAY? (MAYBE NOT: SEE UPDATE) Says:

[...] Tommy Toliver doesn’t think it’s McCain who is the target of the smear. I have also received several emails questioning whether or not it’s McCain. [...]

  61. Tommy Oliver Says:

    Erik,
I don’t reveal my theories in case I am wrong…

  62. MWS Says:

BTW Huck is looking great on Jay Leno.

Granted, it’s not MTP, but hey, he’s still looking good.

  63. Patrick Says:

You know, this could also be much ado about nothing.

  64. MWS Says:

I think it’s a bunch of book pushing hype, mainly supported by the author’s opinions and (maybe) memories.

  65. bjalder26 Says:

It could also be Ted Lane Sampley, who is also part of the same anti-McCain group, “worked for a television station and then a local weekly newspaper”, and has done a lot of research into McCain.
    http://www.usvetdsp.com/sampbio.htm

  66. BWett Says:

Seriously, it’s time to focus. I know the majority of this board is young, but come on, don’t be so naive. There is no such thing as a smoking gun of this type so late in the primary process. It’s a scam by someone who wants to sell something. Don’t be so easily fooled.

  67. Axel G. (independent) Says:

I would like to say attacking McCain’s military record will backfire, but Kerry ignored the swiftboat ads because he thought it was bs.

  68. MR Says:

The theory that it’s a McCain hit piece doesn’t make any sense. This book likely took months to write, given how carefully it has been researched and all. Why would anyone have begun a last-minute hit piece on McCain at any time during 2007 when his campaign appeared to be dead by summer? That would be like spending vast amounts of time and resources to compile a hit piece on Mike Gravel over the course of the past year JUST IN CASE he makes a comeback right before New Hampshire!!! No, this isn’t about McCain. This was planned months ago in order to take down the guy who, up until now, has always been favored to win New Hampshire: Willard Mitt Romney.

  69. MR Says:

Also note that the press release says that the book will lay out “literally” the “chapter and verse” of what this candidate has done wrong. This, along with the Biblical allusion in the name of the source, seems to suggest that one of the candidates is being targeted in a religious manner, either for advocating a religious tenet that most Americans will find appalling or for disobeying one that most Americans agree with (e.g., adultery).

  70. shiggz Says:

    ROMNEY LIED PIES DIED!!

    NO BLOOD FOR LEMON MERINGUE!!

    PIE #11 WAS INSIDE JOB

  71. SDGOP Says:

I think regardless of who the story is on, it won’t really have legs. This seems to me like one of thse national enquirer type stories that even the liberal media would ignore. This would be better released on the friday too. Releasing the day before won’t let the story permeate in time.

  72. PnGrata Says:

The ‘literally gives “chapter and verse”‘ phrase makes me think Mitt is the target. I think it’s an attempt to sell yet another anti-Mormon book using old standard canards, only using Mitt’s candidacy as the new twist. It’ll probably focus on stuff like the temple oaths, and the argument Mitt got into with Stephanopoulos several months ago about where Christ will return (Jerusalem or Missouri).

Why it’s being done before NH and not Iowa? Not sure, but it might be the guy is more interested in selling books than sinking candidacies, because he thinks he’ll get more publicity after the general public finally starts paying attention to the race after the caucus.

  73. SDGOP Says:

If you look at the press conference, there are multiple references to the candidates ability to ’shoot straight’. Sounds an awful lot like mccain.

  74. SDGOP Says:

    Er press release

  75. shiggz Says:

    PnGrata,
I just read through all the reports i could find and you may be onto something. Chapter/Verse/curtain/cold hard facts/meticulously-researched/ is exactly how anti-LDS books would speak.

Or maybe its a late night infomercial/conspiracy theory either way they all use the same over the top absolutists irrefutable (so don’t bother asking)language.

Maybe the other candidates will be asked to explain why they believe jonah lived inside a whale, or if the whole earth flooded without leaving any evidence behind. I think it abhorrent to ask any person of faith to have to explain these things. I just hope my evangelical friends are careful playing the archeology card that cuts both ways.

  76. Sammy Says:

I think its related to an affair McCain has had with a lobbyist for quite a few years. Related to favors done on behalf of the female lobbyist and the telecom industry. Many people in DC know about the relationship and I think its just starting to surface now. I don’t think its fair or justified in a race for President, but it goes against what people see as an honest individual. Hence, not shooting straight with the American public. I think there is a lot more to the book than the affair, but it will be the “hook” for the book to spread far and wide… I may be wrong, but a few DC people said it has a very good chance of being the story with New Hampshire now playing an important role with McCain in the lead. The lady was a senior VP for a well known lobbying firm when McCain was Commerce Chairman. Some say lobbyists who were cut out of the Telecom Act are passing along this story because they didn’t get what they wanted in the bill. I am just passing what I have heard on the Hill from people in the know.

  77. shiggz Says:

An author, former TV business news editor, decorated military hero and college political science instructor who shares this candidate’s party affiliation – and who has known the candidate personally since their college days.

With this much detail the the target candidate should know who this is. One ear open for pre-emptive damage control

  78. Sean Says:

I’m guessing Mike Huckabee is the author and the book is about Mitt Romney. Huckabee will decide at the last minute not to release the book, and will then provide free copies for the media.

  79. Jared Says:

    #78 – LOL. That was funny! :)

  80. BarkTwiggs Says:

A McCain affair sounds entirely plausible. He’s wondered astray before during his first marriage. A revelation like this would be devastating in a primary or national race. Republicans don’t have the sex scandal immunity that Democrats seem to enjoy at times.

  81. PoliGazette » Swiftboating It Says:

[...] When I received the e-mail, I thought it would be wise for me to do some research on the people behind the charges / e-mail: “Revelation Press” and one Daryl Toor. There’s virtually no information out there on Revelation Press, so one gets the impression that it’s quite a secretive campaign. Toor is, as far as I could find, “a former investigative journalist with CBS” and a PR expert (this info was later confirmed by Tommy Oliver). [...]

  82. Eric Dondero Says:

McCain had a campaigner here in Texas, Dallas/Ft. Worth area, quite a prominent McCain for President Texas spokesman, who was busted twice for credit card fraud and for breaking and entering into a vehicle. It hit the local papers. But not nationally. There were even mugshots of the guy on some blogs like the Ellis County Observer.

Seems the guy also had some ties to a very suspicious ex-Police Chief in a small town who had his un-deputized deputies writing faux speeding tickets. The Texas Rangers are still investigating the case.

Perhaps there’s more details coming out on this front?

  83. FCOH Says:

This guy thinks it’s Obama: http://www.religionnews.com/weblogs/religionblog/

Never has a Toto comparison been more apt

At least that’s what this e-mail from my inbox offers.

This blog is best served by quoting the e-mail itself, I think, which comes from a Mr. Daryl Toor, who calls himself CEO/Chief Awareness Officer for Revelation Press

“Three candidates in particular have had their religious heritage; commitment and beliefs challenged – both in the press and by the public – and two of them have been true to their faiths.

The third is about to face his own version of “the inquisition” – not with false or questionable allegations, but with hard and cold facts, presented cogently by someone who grew up sharing those beliefs, someone who shares this candidate’s party affiliation and who has known the candidate since their college days.

Next Monday, January 7th, the truth will come out – announced at the National Press Club’s Murrow Room in Washington D.C. at 1:30 p.m., when a book that literally gives “chapter and verse” will tear aside the curtain, just as Toto exposed the Wizard of Oz.

This book is supported by 10 pages of meticulously-researched end-notes supporting every factual assertion about the candidate’s faith and its implications for the Presidency.

Mr. Toor won’t release more, he said, because he doesn’t want to invite criticism from the candidate’s campaign. I take that to mean he didn’t contact the campaigns. Also, since he refers to the candidate as a “he,” I assume its not Hillary Clinton.

I think I know where this is going. My guess is more nonsense about Obama being a Muslim.

  85. Henry Heavner Says:

If these folks have negative information they should release it, but they should release it now. Waiting until right before the vote just smells.

And if this is some ridiculous charge that John McCain betrayed his country to the NVA, whoever is doing it will just guarantee that McCain wins the vote in New Hampshire. Really, what a stupid thing to do. And slimy and dishonorable.
