Huckabee: Not Winning Friends OR Influencing Fredheads

While Mitt Romney reaches out to Fred Thompson supporters today by complimenting Thompson and what he brought to the race, Governor Huckabee doesn’t seem to be going out of his way to win us former Thompson supporters over to his side, based on his MSNBC interview today.

Memo to Governor Huck, he put out reasons to be elected, and they are called policy, or white papers. You might want to do some reading up on them if you want to win over any Thompson supporters. They’re still fully available for viewing over at www.fred08.com.

Look, I wish I could just jump from one southerner to another, but it’s going to take a lot more than talk to win this guys support. Also, some advice from one southerner to another, put a muzzle on Ed Rollins and knock off the “Thompson stole my votes in South Carolina” schtick. It’s beneath a presidential candidate.

  1. Jason Bonham Says:

Wow, I can’t believe Huckabee thinks that’s a good way to win Fredheads. I have no idea why he can only attract a 1/3 or Evangelicals and no one else.

  2. QuacknHack Says:

This is what Fred says about Huck:

“This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party and its future. On the one hand, you have the Reagan revolution. You have the Reagan coalition of limited government and strong national security.”

“On the other hand, you have the direction that Gov. Huckabee would take us in. He would be a Christian leader, but he would also bring about liberal economic policies, liberal foreign policies. He believes we have an arrogant foreign policy and the tradition of, blame America first. He believes that Guantanamo should be closed down and those enemy combatants brought here to the United States to find their way into the court system eventually. He believes in taxpayer-funded programs for illegals, as he did in Arkansas,” Thompson said. “That’s not the model of the Reagan coalition. That’s the model of the Democratic Party.”

Huck will pander, but do not forget what Fred said about Mike. Every word of it is true.

  3. Nate Says:

If you compare that to Romney’s statement it’s like night and day. Romney is praising Fred but Huck really shoots him down. Brings up the states he lost and says it was inevitable. Of course after the SC debate smack down Huck can’t possibly praise Fred and be sincere, so at least he was honest and didn’t fake liking Fred.

  4. John Mark Says:

I think the value to atracting Fredheads may be overblown. And most one candidate will win them by like a 20% margin and I think that would only give a candidate about two points. Not that that isn’t valuabe, but I think it may get overblown.

  5. Jared Says:

Huckabee is so full of himself. How does he honestly believe that poking fun at Fred will give Fredheads a reason to shift their support over to Huckabee?? The “Fred is stealing my votes” line will definitely repel Fred’s supporters. I know it would have pushed me away, had Huckabee’s horrible positions on the issues not already done as much.

  6. shaw Says:

That woman interviewing Huck was amazing…. She said Huck was was “gracious” in his words that all the other candidates should get out. She laughed at his jokes, and let Huck just go on and on with his drivel. Unbelievable.

  7. John S. Says:

C’mon this surprises us how? We all know Huckabee isn’t the sharpest tool in the ol shed out back. This was a guy that said he’d rather have somebody you work with be the next president of the United States.

  8. bjalder26 Says:

“Huck can’t possibly praise Fred and be sincere, so at least he was honest and didn’t fake liking Fred.”

I think there’s a lot of truth to that statement, but I would think Huck could run against Fred, and still have respect for and like him. That doesn’t seem to be the case though.

  9. joe c. Says:

i dont like huck, and i dont know if anything could change that.

  10. alaska jake Says:

#4. . . Don’t forget, it’s not just FredHeads. It’s also endorsements and credibility. And money. All very important, all of which Huck needs, and all of which Huck pushes away with an interview like this one.

  11. ElectionNightHQ.com (McCain site) Publisher Says:

    Huck-

Come on – you have to bring Fred’s supporters to you. At least SOME of them.

  12. Abe Says:

So they won’t go to Mitt……

    BEWARE…………

    The RETURN…………..

  13. bjalder26 Says:

I can’t really say I “dislike Huck”, but I’m certainly not politically aligned with him and would find it hard to imagine a scenario where I would actually vote for him (for president).

  14. BarkTwiggs Says:

So, who will be next to drop out: Huckabee or Giuliani?

I think they might both drop out around the same time, right after super-tuesday. Huckabee definately will put his support behind McCain and Giuliani could go either way.

Though, I don’t know exactly how well Huckabee’s base will side with McCain, I imagine what’s left of Giuliani’s base would side more easily with Romney.

All of the Rudy supporters who would’ve switched to McCain have done so already and there may be some resentment leftover with the stalwarts.

  15. Kevin Says:

    Wow…

    Huckabee is an arrogant douche.

    Sorry, had to be said.

  16. John S. Says:

I think the Huckster drops out next. No money equals no campaign.

  17. Sean Says:

I think most Fredheads will go to Mitt. As a Facebooker i’ve been reading positive comments from several Thompson supporters who have now switched to Mitt.

  18. John S. Says:

    Sean
That’s great to hear! As a Mitt supporter we welcome you with open arms.

  19. Sean Says:

John-I’ve been a Mitt supporter since day 1

  20. Randy Says:

In addition to a decisive win in Florida for Mitt, I would love to see single digits for the National Pastor.

  21. John S. Says:

    Sean
Sorry I thought you were a fallen Fred supporter.

  22. John S. Says:

    Randy,
Agreed I would love to see the National Pastor take 4th place in FL.

  23. Kevin Says:

The best thing that could happen to Mitt is for Giuliani’s strategy to bust, Thompson to drop out, and Huckabee fade.

If it’s him vs. McCain, Republicans will hand Mitt the nomination on a platter. If they can get Huckabee marginalized, and Rudy loses Florida as seems like, it’s a cakewalk.

Long way from there, but it’s closer than ever before.

  24. bjalder26 Says:

“I think the Huckster drops out next. No money equals no campaign.”

Or is it, no campaign equals no money?

  25. Jason Says:

Kevin I think we are getting there.

  26. John S. Says:

    Bjalder
Anyway you slice it he’s on his way out. Go Mitt!

  27. Ogrepete Says:

Wow, what an arrogant, insensitive interview from Huckabee. Fred’s at his sick mother’s side, has just dropped out of the race, and Huckabee can’t find anything nice to say?

I, frankly, laughed out loud when the interviewer called Huckabee’s comments “gracious.” I’m sure that was tongue-in-cheek and she was calling him out for being rather ungracious.

  28. Rick Malek Says:

Before Osama Bin Laden there was Muammar Kaddafi, who has been dictator of Libya since 1969. During that time, Kaddafi’s Libya has financed many acts of terrorism around the world, against America, Israel and her allies.

Ronald Regan himself called the Libyan dictator an America murdering thug. He said

“Our evidence is direct;it is precise;it is irrefutable. We have solid evidence about other attacks Kaddafi has planned against the United States installations and diplomats and even American tourists. Thanks to the close cooperation with our friends, some of those have been prevented. With the help of French authorities, we recently aborted one such attack: a planned massacre, using hand grenades and small arms, of civilians waiting in line for visas at the American Embassy.

Colonel Kaddafi is not only the enemy of the United States, his record of subversion and aggression against his neighboring states in Africa is well documented and well known. He has ordered the murder of fellow Libyans in countless countries, and he has sanctioned acts of terror in Africa, Europe and the Middle East as well as the Western Hemisphere.”

While Ronald Reagan was calling the Libyan dictator “an enemy of the United States, Fred Thompson was doing something else.

Fred signed on with the law firm of Arent Fox, a Washington DC based law firm, along with his “close friend”, former Senator John Culver (D-IA).

“I have been ‘Of Counsel’ to Arent Fox since May of 1991″
(Fred D. Thompson, Letter to Phil Williams, Channel 2 Nashville, 9/3/93)

“Fred Thompson… is making a more permanent connection here. The Tennessee lawyer, who headed his own firm in Nashville and came here on an infrequent basis, has joined Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin & Kahn, the Washington firm with which his close friend John Culver, the former senator, is also affiliated ”
(Chuck Conconi, “Personalities” Washington Post 4/17/91)

While Fred served there, Arent Fox lobbied for “several foreign governments” with Fred Thompson himself becoming a “registered foreign agent”.

“Before Fred Thompson became a celebrity in his biggest role ever- a hard nosed US Senator rooting out foreign influences in American politics– he was just a little ol’ lawyer with Arent Fox, a DC firm that at the time did legal and lobbying work for several foreign governments and various overseas corporations”
(Gabriel Snyder, :”Fund Raising Hearings; Whos Peddling Influence To Whom? Time 7/28/97)

“From 1991 to 1993 Fred Thompson himself was registered as a foreign agent for the Washington law firm of Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin & Kahn, according to justice department records.”
(Jill Lawrence, “Senator Style Is White House Next?” USA Today 2/14/97)

In February 1992, Thompson held “Discussions with Culver Regarding Libya”

“In advance of the 1994 Senate race, Thompson received a memo from his staff intended ‘to familiarize us with our DC activities. These activities included a list of client development and A/F activities, including an entry marked “discussions with Culver RE: Libya.”
(Bonnie Sansonetti memo to Fred Thompson, “Arent Fox Clients and Matters 9/27/93)

Around the same time that Fred was having “discussions with Culver regarding Libya”, Culver TRAVELED TO LIBYA to discuss legal representation of Libyan agents accused of bombing Pan Am flight 103!

“For Plato Cacheris, it began when a Libyan businessman came to his Washington law office and asked him to visit Libya. For Jonathan D Schiller, it began when he was having dinner with a client and other lawyers at the hotel of Beau Rivage in Lausanne, Switzerland… In both cases, Libya used intermediaries to get Washington attorneys to discuss representing the two Libyan intelligence officials charged with planting the bomb that killed 270 people…In addition to Cacheris and Schiller, Brendan Sullivan, Thomas H Boggs Jr and former US Senator John Culver are among those that preliminary discussions about doing legal work… Cacheris and Culver went to Libya to discuss representing either the government or the two individuals, but did not take the case or were not retained.”
(Sharon Walsh, “The Libyan Legal Connection” Washington Post 7/21/93)

Arent Fox was paid 833,960 for to work it did on behalf of Libya.

“The Districts Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn has received $833,960 in fees and expenses for work done on behalf of Ibrahim Legwell, the Libyan attorney for the two Pan Am bombing suspects, according to an article in todays National Law Journal that an Arent Fox official confirmed. The Law Journal obtained documents from the Treasury Department after filing requests under the Freedom of Information Act.”
(Sharon Walsh, “US Grand Jury Probing Former State Department Aide” Washington Post 4/25/94)

Apparently to Libyans also circumvented American law in their attempts to clean up the mess.

“Meanwhile, the Libyans have tried a variety of ways to get the sanctions lifted and to get their frozen funds released without giving up the accused. They’ve even hired American lobbyists, in violation of US law, to float various plans to end the sanctions, including plans to compensate the victims families. Treasury Department documents show how the Libyans legally paid several American lawyers more than 3.5 million dollars to find a legal way settle the matter.”
    (CBS “60 Minutes 12/15/96)

What did Fred exactly do for the Libyans?

Did he receive money from the Libyan government for work on behalf of terrorists?

    Did he travel to Libya?

Did he work on the case in any capacity?

Why is there a file that details Thompson’s discussions regarding Libya?

Fred needs to answer these questions.

  29. Heath Says:

    Wow you are right.

Came across has arrogant and unlikeable.

  30. Jess @ Making Home Says:

Those of you saying “no campaign equals no money” and the reverse… do you even remember where Huck was at 2, 3 months ago? He had no money then, either. And went on to win Iowa and do well in several other places. If it was any other candidate, I’d agree, no money, no campaign… but Huck? Well, he’s been in this position before, and he did well- I wouldn’t rule him out because of a supposed lack of funds.

  31. A Second Hand Conjecture » The Peevish Pastor Says:

[...] supporters for supposedly injuring his campaign in South Carolina. Smart move Huck, really should endear you even further to Fred Thompson people who are now looking for a new candidate. I’m eagerly [...]

  32. Paul Brown Says:

All Push Polls being equal, I would think that the only way to see it is that Huckabee stole Fred’s votes!! I mean illegal campaign practices are despicable.

  33. Shawn T. Says:

Tommy – Come on.. Lets not cherry pick here. Huckabee issued the following respectful and honoring statement to Fred Thompson right here:
    http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Blogs.View&Blog_id=1238

Also – From Huck’s Army – we have something to say to Fred Thompson supporters out of respect to you and your candidate:

  34. Ben Says:

not all Fredheads hate Huckabee as much as the writers on this anti-Huckabee website……

  35. Shawn T. Says:

Why are my comments still waiting on moderation?

  36. Shawn T. Says:

Huckabee issued the following respectful and honoring statement to Fred Thompson right here:

  37. Blake Says:

Tommy, don’t be mad your guy dropped out first because he sucked. drop your schtick.

  38. Joseph D. Walch Says:

Too little too late Shawn T.

Say it with me, if Huck can’t win with Thompson in the race, he shouldn’t be running. You can’t simply expect your opponents to drop out of the race.

Are the Democrats going to drop our so that they don’t take away your populist/socialist votes, Huck?

Hucks becomimg more and more caustic as well. I caught a little envious jab at Romney at the end by him saying “I can’t just write a check to myself to fund my campaign.”

Well that logic would work if Romney hadn’t already raised almost 10x in funds than Huckabee. I guess he really wants further campaign restrictions as well.

  39. Joseph D. Walch Says:

Blake, who do you support? How long do you think he has?

Answer: Huckabee, less than one month.

  40. spunky Says:

“Those of you saying “no campaign equals no money” and the reverse… do you even remember where Huck was at 2, 3 months ago?”

Yes, the national media was fawning over him as the dark horse candidate wowing evangelicals and winning Iowa. Since then he has not done anything to prove that this fawning should continue. The national media has moved on an won’t likely be back unless Hucakbee does something to attract their attention or go to events where he knows they will be. I’m guessing that’s why he went ot Ebenezer church. It’s a great free photo-op and since Clinton was t here so was the national media. Huckabee didn’t count on the former President’s nap stealing the headlines thought. S

Huckabee’s early success and momentum were nice, but with his daughter doing three full-time jobs and pother staff working without pay or according to Rollins “leaving” it’s going to be much harder to gain momentum the second time around. He could still do it, but with a little over a week until Super Tuesday the prospects are slim. Donpors and politicians like to be with winners and Huckabee just isn’t winning despite his charisma.

  41. John Galt Says:

fuinny comment about huck not knowing what a policy paper is. hilarious. so true.

  42. Chris Baker Says:

Romney spending so much of his personal fortune seems to becoming an important issue in the Florida media. Also Hillary Clinton seems to be warming up for Romney potentially being the nominee by slamming Obama for “flip-flopping” on healthcare.

  43. K Dub Says:

That woman seemed dumber than rock salt. She called Huckabee “another of the nominees.” Sheesh.

  44. K Dub Says:

I wonder how many FredHeads will jump on the Alan Keyes bandwagon!!! All aboard!

  45. Countrygirlpolitics Says:

This Fred supporter is still wavering between Romney, or sitting out. Right now Romney is the least of the evils left. Last man standing wins, and it looks like he’s probably it.

  46. jaaron Says:

i thought Huck did fine in the interview until he started painting Fred as a liar and attack artist…and then he lost me…it happens a lot…
That Hucky needs to stop playing the victim every time someone: Arkansas, Mitt, Fred, etc. goes after his record…it’s called politics…and no one is dropping out of the race so you can get the nomination…i swear i have heard that one-liner like 60 times…he uses it on every interview.

  47. Lucy Wilson Says:

Wishing Mike Huckabee so much ill will on sites such as this one
just may reflect why he and his supporters are hesitant to reach
out to such anamosity. Would you? (name-calling is so childish..
    (douche?)
Fred spent most of his debate
time trashing Mike. Most viewers did not appreciate this engagement
in incivility during the debates. Look at what is happening with
Hillary and Obama….disgusting. Most viewers of the debates tune
in to hear the candidates debate the ISSUES, not to watch them tear
each other down. To the FredHeads, you are MORE than welcome to
view Mike’s positions on ISSUES on his site….a few of you already have
and have been very warmly welcomed, and some of you have even joined after
seeing how these two Southern Gentlemen agree on many things.
