Because Kansans (who vote next Saturday) love Bob Dole!
From Hotline On Call:
“I was disappointed to see Governor Romney’s desperate attack on Senator Bob Dole, a great Kansan and an American hero,” Brownback says in a statement issued by McCain’s campaign. “Governor Romney’s campaign is fading and this outburst is the latest in a long series of contradictory statements that remind us of his confused political views. I call on Governor Romney to apologize for his disrespectful comments.” (Emphasis added)
Ouch! What a statement. Reminds me of the glory days of the Brownback campaign attacking Mitt, such as proposing a new word:

Right on!!!
February 5th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Give me a break. Brownback and McCain are trying to make an anti-Romney story out of nothing. “Desperate attack”….please. This is absurd.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Who cares….Brownback faded months ago…
February 5th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Is McCain instructing him to ? This is a joke if the MSM runs with this
nonsense as a story.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
HAHAHA I love it.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Doofus Brownback just needs to shutup, Romney didn’t even attack Dole. He just said giving the nomination to the “next in line” like Republicans did in 96 didn’t turn out so well.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Billy,
Inventing make-believe words for other candidates was indeed Brownback’s “glory days”.
Too bad that was the extent of his campaign.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Brownback is as about as relevant as last week’s weather. Hasn’t Brownback endorsed McCain? Is it any surprise that Brownback would react this way?
February 5th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Did Brownback or Gilmore drop out first? I can’t remember given how insignificant they were.
But, looks like Brownback is happy to be counted as one of McCain’s useful idiots…er… I mean “my friends”
February 5th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Consevatives!!! Wake up!!! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!
February 5th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Curious as to Bob Dole’s reaction to Mitt’s comments…rather than McCain’s camp. McCain’s camp is the same group that lied and said the Dole letter to Rush was an endorsement of McCain. Just another LIE!
February 5th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I agree that Romney’s desperation is evidenced by this kind of swipe at Bob Dole. Look, none of us LOVE Dole– none of us think he’s the end-all, be-all. But to say, “he’s the last person I’d want a letter of support from”?!??!?!?
That’s absurd, and it’s political desperation. This is Romney’s last stand, thank God!
February 5th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
#11-
Well, the fact that Romney tried to call Dole after making this comment and got Dole’s secretary and had to leave a message is probably a sign of what Dole’s reaction was. I’m SURE that the secretary knows how to reach Dole, particularly on a day like today, and clearly, Romney got the shaft.
What would be YOUR reaction if someone said YOURS was the last endorsement they’d want? That’s pretty over-the-top… and if I was Dole, I’d be incredibly hurt and likely offended.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Brownback is just being a low life like his cohorts McLiar and McHuckaliar.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Bob Dole writing a letter in the first place is a problem.
Don’t tell me who to vote for…
Conservatives…fight through the hype. The battles are still ahead…FIGHT!!! FIGHT!!! FIGHT!!!
February 5th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Please, Dole is a big boy and he needs to grow up if he’s offended.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Just got a call from Mike Huckabee himself (can you believe it? The Gov. actually called ME?!) touting his win in WV and how conservatives are rallying to Huckabee.
maybe it was just a recording?
February 5th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
This is the only desperate attack.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
I don’t see why Mitt’s opinion of Bob Dole matters that much when the very survival of our constitutional republic is at stake.
Maybe it’s just me.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Jess…Dole is a man, demonstrated by his war hero status. He isn’t going to pout considering he has heard many pundits compare the McCain campaign to the Dole campaign. Dole realizes that he DID lose and that age was an issue during his campaign.
Do we know that the Secretary refused to contact Dole or are those your assumptions? I am bummed that Dole wasn’t waiting by the phone waiting for a call…(sarcasm)
February 5th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Well i’m very disturbed my my candidate Mitt Romney making those comments about one of my favorite political figures, Bob Dole, here in Kansas, this man is beloved and i’m now voting for John McCain, b/c i cannot vote for a candidate who wants to slam Bob Dole like Mr.Romney did, and i’m sure there will be other Kansas for Romney voters who will follow me. Mitt Romney should be ashamed of himself the way he handled this whole situation today!
February 5th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
brownback spent all his time running against mitt instead of for himself. ditto huckabee. its a common theme among mccain supporters. dont build your guy up, just tear the other one down.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Troll, I mean, Bill #21,
Oh, I’m sure you’re really a Romney supporter in Kansas who decided to vote McCain because of this.
I also have a bridge I’d like to sell you.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
I’m sorry, who is Brownback?

Brownback got slaughtered by Romney and is now endorsing McCAin - why post something that means nothing.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Erik #24,
This guy.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
WOW, McCain just keeps sinking and sinking to new lows, he will do anything to get the nomination. He is so toast in the general election! I’ll never vote for him and there are many more that will not either. Ann, Rush, Hannity…etc will be working the Hillary campaign if McCain gets the GOP Nod, mark my words on that!.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Josiah, #19: I’m with you there. The dirt sure flies fast on Election day. I’m sick of the gutter politics. Which candidate will best protect our freedoms, our free market, our borders? Who cares what gaffes they make?
February 5th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Should we post everything that romney endorsers say about McCAin?
Billy this is lame
February 5th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Why is it that virtually everyone in the republican field likes McCain (on a personal level) and dislikes Romney? Are they all part of an anti-conservative conspiracy? A republican establishment conspiracy? Is McCain just a good guy? I’m sure someone out there has an opinion.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
#22: Really? As opposed to Rush Limbaugh, who spent SO MUCH time talking about how great a President Mitt Romney would be? (sarcasm off)
Oh, and we’re going to start calling anyone who says something you don’t like a liar, how’s that NRA endorsement of Mitt Romney coming along?
February 5th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Tomorrow’s Headlines: (depending on which one loses)
Holy McCrap!
Super Tuesday Huck’d a loogie
Mitticulously defeated
February 5th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Stop attacking Sam Brownback (he’s no longer a threat) and Bob Dole (a war hero and a fine Senator).
I guess Mitt doesn’t really want to win in Kansas.
Maybe Mitt should tout his fine service record to counteract McCain’s resume. Didn’t he serve in France or something?
February 5th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I don’t know the exact “attack” on Dole, but I will assume the worst for sake of argument. However, it was clear to me in McCain’s response that he is trying to bring back the war to forefront.
When did Romney attack Dole’s service?
McCain is setting the table so that he can’t be attacked (on any issue) because of his military service. Pathetic.
February 5th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
McCain is a hypocrit. Like heck he isn’t playing in the slop with the pig. This guy is just a mad old man that is going to get his trash kicked come November if Republicans and Democrats are really stupid enough to prop this man up as the Republican nominee.
February 5th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Why does ANY utterance of Brownback merit a post?? Could you find anybody more irrelevant?
February 5th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Everytime the campaign of John Kerry, errr, McCain use the war hero, american hero bulls***t I would liked to be one of his captors.
February 5th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
SORRY NO! I remember the fiasco that was the Dole campaign and there was nothing note worthy about it. I remember the mental anguish I had, sitting on the couch watching Clinton wipe the floor with poor Bob. Bob Dole and McCain look SOOO much alike to me that my stomach aches seeing McCain struggle to look fresh and idea laden.
February 5th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
I call on Brownback to shut his trap.
February 5th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
This whole “issue” is a fabrication from McCain who just waited to pounce on the opportunity. Who leaked the letter in the first place? OMG, it is despicable what McCain is doing.
February 5th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

I second the motion
February 5th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
35, a couple of points. First of all, Romney’s attack on Dole was uncalled for and
a pretty mean spirited swipe at a man who is, by all accounts, a decent guy. It also could wind up costing him the election in Kansas.
Now, McCain deserves criticisim for taking ROMNEY’s criticism to a level it didn’t warrant. Romney DID insult Dole, but not with respect to his military service, and McCain should have limited his criticism to that. But I gotta say, when one of Romney’s best arguments is that the other guy has a bad temper, his outburst really diminishes him.
By the way, #38, your comment is absolutely disgusting. Really, really disgusting. Have fun campaigning for Clinton.
February 5th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Romney did not attack Dole personally. Words mean things. Read the text. This is all about nothing.
February 5th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
#43 — he called Dole a loser. Did he use the words? No, but the intent was clear. And by the way, I do not want to spend the next 8 years parsing out each and every sentence my commander in chief says like I did in 1993-2001. Romney knew the impression he was trying to get out.
February 5th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Reminds me of the old jingle from the 70s … A Dole banana is great banana..It’s great banana because it’s Dole..because it’s Dole…..Brownback has eaten to many Dole bananas
3M - The Manchurian Candidate, the Minister, and the Mormon … now things will start getting sticky…
At least Ron Paul talks about upholding the Constitution , promoting liberty
just don’t cut and run out of Iraq…there are plenty of Democrats to do that.
Any chance the Los Angeles polling fiasco might be due to voting machine rigging?
Go Duncan Hunter!

The Kansas Republican caucuses are this Saturday. Dole is pretty-much regarded as a god in Kansas. And Romney, who needs all the wins he can get, just snubbed Dole. Politically, it was stupid, and easily-avoided, self-immolation. It probably won’t play too much outside of Kansas, but it was still a stupid thing to do.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
So is this the correct way to spell mitt-amorphosis now Billy?? Again just jumping on the band wagon. Do you have anything positive to say or is it all just attack attack attack with you Billy?
