Karl Rove Delegate Count Estimate: Approx 200
February 6th, 2008 at 12:39 am
Don’t forget MN for Romney. Not that it really matters.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:40 am
NOW you can talk about the delegate count, Rombots.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:41 am
They haven’t taken into account McCain’s double digit win in CA, which will push more CA delegates into his column. I think we’re looking at closer to 600 for Mac.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:41 am
TLG, LOL.
Indeed.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:41 am
McCain is the nominee - California effectively ended it.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:42 am
Has Romney won any primaries (as opposed to caucuses) other than Michigan and Massachusetts?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:42 am
Metro #6,
Utah.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:43 am
I don’t think so Metro. Romney’s strength was always in the caucus states.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:44 am
Fox News reports that Mitt is going to waste more of his money (and more of our time) and continue in the race.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:44 am
I think his estimate for McCain is low. I’m guessing McCain is going to be close to 600 since he is doing so incredibly well in CA. CNN already has him with 475 with Mitt at 151 and Huckabee at 105.
I believe the Fat Lady may be warming up, but if necessary my state (VA) may seal the deal next week.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:45 am
JME # 10,
McCain may win VA by 20 points.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Has Romney won any primaries (as opposed to caucuses) other than Michigan and Massachusetts?
Just for fun, a scrambler:
A O N M D M N R L O
Answer:
Mormonland
February 6th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Note Halperin’s state count on the Dem side:
Barry: 12
Hilly: 8
February 6th, 2008 at 12:46 am
“They haven’t taken into account McCain’s double digit win in CA, which will push more CA delegates into his column. I think we’re looking at closer to 600 for Mac.”
Uhh McCain is up by double digits now but it could end up being a 1 point win or we could have an early call on our hands(like Florida in 2000).
February 6th, 2008 at 12:46 am
A vote for Huckabee is a vote for Jesus…
February 6th, 2008 at 12:47 am
A message to all you so-called conservative Huckabee people bringin’ My Man Mitt (dot com!) down:
A VOTE FOR HUCKABEE IS A VOTE FOR HUCKABEE.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:47 am
McCain is the nominee Romney shouldnt spend any more money on this.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Wow those polls were way off in CA. Pity…
I was expecting Fred to pull a sleeper’s victory anyway.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Now as the GOP race winds down, now we can watch Hillary and Obama beat the crap out of each other for another month, that’ll be fun.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:48 am
TLG,
Honest question. Do you not like Mormons or do you just like the phrase mormonland?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Honest question. Do you not like Mormons or do you just like the phrase mormonland?
Both.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Moral of the story-Mac wins moderates and liberals(no surprise) Romney wins Conservatives
February 6th, 2008 at 12:49 am
But before you go into hysterics, I don’t like any religion.
I always need to clarify that before the TLG-is-a-bigot brigade comes out.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:49 am
27% of the vote in CA were late-deciders. McCain won 40% - 36%
#1 issue? The Economy which McCain won 46% - 33%.
21% of voters said Rudy’s endorsement of John McCain was “very important”.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:49 am
Romney had to win FL to have a chance to win it all but it didnt happen.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:49 am
And you don’t like Mormons why?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:49 am
The next 3 races are 2 closed caucuses and a southern state. The battering of McCain on talk radio will continue, Romney will win the caucuses, Huck will win Louisiana. I wouldn’t make any predictions about who will get the most delegates out of California..
February 6th, 2008 at 12:50 am
#23 But what about Scientologists?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:50 am
The MN result may take Pawlenty of the list of VP picks for McCain since he couldn’t deliver the state to McCain. I say Sanford is now the VP front-runner
February 6th, 2008 at 12:51 am
All of the exit poll’s i’m seeing have McCain winning Cali at the least by 13 Points, and at the most by 24 Points, so i think that McCain will get alot of Del’s out of California.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:51 am
#23 But what about Scientologists?
Well, I can make an exception for them…
February 6th, 2008 at 12:52 am
And you don’t like Mormons why?
Because they support Mitt Romney.
Er, because I’m an atheist and an anti-theist.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:52 am
McCain has already won the Delegates for Louisiana. At least that’s what i thought?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:53 am
Bill Kristol predicts that Mitt will drop out on Thursday at CPAC.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:54 am
#33 Well “pro-life uncommitted” won the LA caucuses and there are reports that they were all going to McCain befor FL so they are probably all going to McCain
February 6th, 2008 at 12:54 am
34, that makes no sense to drop out before Huckabee
February 6th, 2008 at 12:55 am
Jonathan #35,
The “uncommitted” slate in LA has already committed to John McCain.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:55 am
When will Huckabee drop out? After KS on Saturday or after Virginia, Maryland and DC on Feb 12th.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:56 am
#32 Does the flying spaghetti monster qualify as a deity in your book? If so, which GOP candidate would he/she endorse? If not, which Democratic candidate would he/she endorse?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:57 am
This is McCain’s nomination. He’s going into the general election without the staunch support of the conservative base of the “former” republican party. He will have some work to do to unite the new and reformed republican party - (should be renamed to the republicrat party) - I don’t see it happening.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:57 am
Kavon,(9) you think Mitt has been wasting our time? Since when have you become such a weenie?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:58 am
Wow, CNN is saying roughly McCain will get 743 Delegates!
February 6th, 2008 at 12:59 am
Kavon,
How many delegates will McCain get from Louisiana and will it be apportioned or is it WTA?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:59 am
I find it really hard to believe that Romney will stay in the race. I really dislike Bill Kristol, but he is right about this one. Romney will drop out fairly soon and CPAC is the perfect opportunity to go out with a bang, it may even allow him to start his trajectory on his future in politics.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:00 am
#32 Does the flying spaghetti monster qualify as a deity in your book? If so, which GOP candidate would he/she endorse? If not, which Democratic candidate would he/she endorse?
Flying Spaghetti Monster is soooo cliched.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:00 am
#38
Huck will not drop out. Nobody will drop out. The republican party is screwed. Look at all the McCain shills on FOX and how depressed they look.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:00 am
Karl Rove says that Clinton will have an over 100 delegate lead. With the proportional rules, it will be very hard for Obama to catch up.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:01 am
743 for McCain is too high. I think he will be a little under 700. In the end though it doesn’t matter because McCain won the nomination tonight.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:01 am
CNN is saying that McCain is winning all over California including in Orange County!
Wow! If that hold’s up then they are saying McCain will get about 120 Delegates from California!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:01 am
What HAPPENED with Mitt in California!?
February 6th, 2008 at 1:01 am
Bryan #42,
If McCain gets over 50% in LA’s upcoming primary, then he gets them all.
If no candidate tops 50%, it is proportional.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:02 am
The discrepancy on the Dem side is intriguing.
For states:
Barry: 13
Hilly: 8
For delegates:
Barry: 362
Hilly: 449
Looks like they could be in for a long fight. That could be helpful if it depletes some of their cash resources.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:03 am
#50, surprisingly, economic voters went for McCain which crippled Romney’s chances
February 6th, 2008 at 1:03 am
#52: Delegates were from CNN online. The numbers are changing fast. State wins were from Halperin.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:03 am
The exit polls asked a different question this time about the Economy.
“Who do you think is best equipped to manage the Economy?”
Romney had large margins on this questions nearly everywhere.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:03 am
No kidding TLG, what happened?
My guess is nothing happened to Mitt, but instead the pollsters screwed up and Romney was never as close in CA as we thought.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:03 am
TLG #50,
It is really fascinating isn’t it? Everything was wrong when it came to California!
Except Intrade….
February 6th, 2008 at 1:04 am
Yea i know but CNN is saying that McCain is winning in most of the Congressional Districts, and that is why they are saying that McCain will get alot of Delegates out of California.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:04 am
#51.
I’ll be out voting (and getting many others out) to make sure that Mccain doesn’t get to 50% in LA.
Making my vote COUNT!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:04 am
of any issue to pick McCain over Romney, the economy just doesn’t seem like the biggest… wtf people? meh, what do i care. The GOP candidate was doomed to lose this year anyway.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:05 am
#44 - I can’t see Romney staying in politics - he doesn’t have a huge power hungry ego to feed. He took his shot. He should go back into the private sector where his talents and skills could be put to better use.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:05 am
Shepard Smith repeating the “Huck splits the conservative vote with Mitt” lie.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:06 am
Well the only good thing from tonight is the fact that I will have much more time to study and work on research for school.
I will focus my efforts on trying to help retake JD Hayworth’s seat in AZ.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:07 am
CNN’s fudging their exit polls big time.
I just refreshed it and while the total respondent went from 931 to 1051 McCain’s lead went from 1-2% up to 10%. That means that everyone they added in was a McCain supporter.
What’s up with that?
February 6th, 2008 at 1:07 am
Huck didn’t split votes with anyone, he won his own voters and swept the entire South, it was Huckabee’s night as much as McCain’s
February 6th, 2008 at 1:08 am
I think this was a bad year for Mitt to run, actually. And Giuliani. Hmm… come to think of it, several dependent factors combined to give the two bad luck. Including Mitt making it harder for Giuliani to become the nominee and Huckabee making it harder for Mitt to become the nominee and Thompson making it harder for Huckabee to become the nominee… Interesting season indeed.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:10 am
#66 We started out with a divided field and McCain started picking off his rivals one by one. First Fred, then Rudy, now Romney and finally the Huckster
February 6th, 2008 at 1:12 am
According to exit polling, Huckabee got 0% of the Mormon vote in Utah.
He deserved that result.
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/#UTREP
February 6th, 2008 at 1:13 am
Well - we are in a recession. Great time to hand the POTUS over to the liberals (McCain, Huckabee, Obama, or Clinton - take your pick) http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/05/news/economy/recession/index.htm
February 6th, 2008 at 1:14 am
Bill Kristol on Fox News said that Romney should drop out now and let voters decide between McCain and Huckabee.
NO WAY the #2 guy in total votes, total wins, and total delegates drops out BEFORE the guy who’s #3 in all those areas.
I know it’s late, but what is Kristol smoking?
February 6th, 2008 at 1:15 am
My guess from here is that Ron Paul is the next to concede within a week (saves money), followed by Mitt (good number of delegates, but no geographic base and only a talent for winning caucuses), and then Huck (strong southern geographic base so far — wait for VA and NC).
February 6th, 2008 at 1:15 am
Its time to come together and coalece around our candidate, John McCain. How many Romney supporters will join in supporting John McCain?
February 6th, 2008 at 1:16 am
BTW, this is completly unrelated to politics but pray tonight for the people in AR and TN. Over 10 people were killed by very powerful tornadoes in both states
February 6th, 2008 at 1:18 am
SIGH
February 6th, 2008 at 1:19 am
Romney’s lost so many close races . . . almost like it wasn’t “meant to be” for him.
Where Huckabee’s lost, he’s lost BIG (essentially everywhere outside the south).
What’s his reason for staying in the race? A chance to win Mississippi? . . . come on!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:19 am
John McCain is a lying dirty sack of shit and will lose in the general election
February 6th, 2008 at 1:19 am
Jonathan,
Well said, we all need to pray for all those people, that was terrible news.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:20 am
#72 - As if it were that easy to unite the party. McCain is not a conservative and the party deserves to lose in November for having him as the nominee.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:21 am
random,
We dont need any of that on here, go back to the bar man!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:21 am
Just a word to all you McCain supporters. If you think you can win the genreal election without Romney supporters you are as dumb as the day is long. Look at the numbers people. Romney garners a ton of support and you are willing to piss all over that because you are ignorant on how to win elections. It is because of people like you that a majority of those that support Romney will never pull the lever for McCain. Keep up the good work!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:23 am
65 - yes, full props to Huckabee. He was the real surprise of the night. I was sitting at a party cheering him on in Missouri when it became clear Mitt wouldn’t take it. Yes, tonight was disappointing for Mitt people. We didn’t win any of the borderline states we thought we needed at least a couple of (GA, MO, CA, DE). On the other hand, Huck was strong enough in the south to keep McCain’s count much lower than anticipated in this worst case scenario. Suddenly Huck is strong enough to not simply be gambling for McCain’s veep, but can chart his own course, and has become someone to cut a deal with. And McCain did not wrap things up tonight either. Mitt needs to make a decision, but I can see him going either way and can support continuing on in what would once again be a three man race.
Look at it this way - according to the Rove count above, McCain still needs 600 delegates, or 2/3rds of what’s left. If both Mitt and Huck continue, they can force it to convention. If either of them quit, then McCain has it wrapped up and won’t need either. People who want to see Huckabee President all of a sudden need Mitt to stay in, and vis versa. So we’ll see. We’ll see.
And I continue to polls.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:23 am
MarkG,
“no geographic base” for ROmney?
Have you completely ignored the intermountain west (which is a lot more of a “swing” area than the south?)
Does anyone here really think that Huckabee has more of a reason to stay in the race that ROmney?
February 6th, 2008 at 1:24 am
I will do as I think Mitt has and stop caring about this race. The discourse from people on here are really below the pale. The party and the country deserve what they get, John McCain. I will laugh my butt off when the MSM and the GOP give McCain the middle finger over the next 7 months just like he did to us.
A note to Kavon. I dont know what your problem is. While you always supported Rudy, you use to be more respectful to the other candidates. You met Mitt and his wife at an event and posted how impressed you were, even though you had your differences. Yet now, you and others seem so concerned about a man who has been trying to carry the conservative banner on his own dime. God forbid he spend his own money he earned himself. McCain will be a disaster for the party, and he can ourselves for compromising our principles and getting in bed with him.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:24 am
#80 I’m a McCainiac now, and I hope all the Romney supporters come and rally behind Sen. McCain, and we McCainiacs welcome all those who want to keep Bill Clinton from becoming First Lady
February 6th, 2008 at 1:25 am
Jonathan #73: Amen!!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:27 am
#84 - I would welcome another Clinton administration - it would help the republican party remember what it stands for - right now, with McCain as the standard bearer, the party is being redefined the moderately, liberal republicrat party.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:27 am
Obama won Alaska btw
February 6th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Both Huckabee and Romney should drop out. I just don’t think Huckabee has the good sense to do so.
Give McCain a week to see how things go in national polls and to see if McCain begins to embrace conservatives or if he shuns them since he has already won the primary. If no historic collapse has happened by the time of CPAC then Romney should give a great speech there and then drop out.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:29 am
80 - “majority” of Romney supporters is too much to say. The latest attempted general election poll in Utah, done by BYU, had McCain beating Obama by about 10 points.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:29 am
#84,
Thanks for the invite, but count me out (Mccain’s never cared about me and my main issues, and I don’t care to help him become president—I think we can call that a respectful understanding)
Plus he knee-capped my candidate with a blatant lie just before the crucial FL primary (that doesn’t help)
http://iowansforromney.blogspot.com/2008/01/im-mad-as-hell-and-im-not-going-to-take.html
February 6th, 2008 at 1:29 am
Hello, all-
Well, the big day is over, at last. Given that it’s 1:30 AM, it might be time to let the final numbers settle in, from everywhere (including outside the continental U.S.), and then see where we go from here. I know that regardless of which candidate we support, there have been ups and downs and we all feel pretty passionately about the outcomes… Props to all the contributors who have kept us fed w/ info all day, from coast to coast…
February 6th, 2008 at 1:30 am
Did anyone hear the big news. The Suns are going to trade Shawn Marion for Shaq.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:31 am
I’ve been annoyed at Mitt and the Choir Rombotic for some time now. But I don’t want to rub it in that your guy apparently lost tonight. You’ve fought the valiant fight, fought hard, but your candidate failed to connect with me. You will do, as you have so far, what you believe is right for yourselves and your country.
May your adjustment to the new electoral realities be as easy as possible under the circumstances. Trust me, I know it is tough to swallow the bitter defeat. But I know that’s no consolation, either…
February 6th, 2008 at 1:31 am
I should say, “i’ll do what Mitt ought to do, and stop caring about this race”. I think tonight I take back my life. I wont continue to engage in stupid, worthless debates about mormonism, and I wont have to hear “phony and used car salesman on every other thread”. The discourse on this site and in this debate is ridiculous. The campaign should have been about issues, and ones record. Instead we spend time and energy attacking ones faith and character to gain a political advantage.
I think a McCain disaster as a nominee and likely loser of the general election will finally wake up the republican party to rally around a true conservative in future elections and not go with Sampo’s silly “national general election” polls 1 year out of an election. That shouldnt be the barometer of picking a nominee, but we wont realize that until McCain gets waxed in the general.
The MSM will dump him, conservatives wont embrace him, moderates and indy’s will vote dem, and in the end he will be carrying his own bags at the airport again.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:36 am
“Mitt and the rombotic choir”….
You see, thats the dialouge I mean. Name calling Rombots like we are all KoolAid drinking mormon Romney fans is just ignorant and stupid. What name was given to those who like McCain, Rudy, Huck… none.
The election should have been about issues. I didnt like Huck because of issues like pardons, taxes, immigration. But the anti Romney crowd make this about being phony, spending too much, etc.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:40 am
A few things from today:
I heard a lot of people today say that they won’t support McCain in the general election. Frankly I think as many conservative Romney supporters will vote for Hillary as vote for McCain.
1) The endorsements of Christ, Schwarzenegger and Giuliani were huge today
2) Obviously McCain won big today
3) If Huckabee was a conservative he would drop out and endorse Romney thus evening the playing field and coalescing the conservative vote that he gets because he is perceived as conservative by his voters.
4) I have little doubt that McCain would win a brokered convention.
5) This election will likely be decided by McCain’s backroom deals.
6) Romney played too clean in this race.
7) Right now I don’t see any clear path to victory for Romney, but I won’t give up because I’d sooner support Hillary at this point as let McCain win.
9) I see zero reason to support McCain in the general election, and I probably won’t sit it out. I also can’t see anything convincing me to vote for McCain over Hillary, and if it’s Obama, he might beat McCain in 49 states.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:44 am
As for me, pro-Romney - McCain has bridged a gap much too wide for me to care to jump to his side. His tactics have been dirty and dishonest, his record fails to impress, he would rely on John Kemp to translate what is going on with the economy, he does WAY too many back room deals (including trying to get Shawn Hannity’s boss to try to influence what he says on air, according to Hannity) and probably owes SO many favors it will take his entire 4 year term just to come clear on all his inside promises to people.
I am sorry, but I think most of us Rombots do not care for someone that can stoop to the levels he does, and is SO self absorbed and throw the POW at everyone as his armor to excuse his ignorance. He has lied and done terrible tactics to our candidate, and last minute, making snide remarks about him everytime he gets a chance…sorry, but I don’t think that will help to bring that part of the base to him!!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:49 am
Husky #83,
I have nothing but the utmost respect for Mitt & Ann Romney and believe they are two of the finest people you will meet anywhere. As you mentioned, I should know, I ate barbecue with both of them this Summer
.
However, the Republican nomination was essentially won on Jan. 29th. I said it that evening, and tonight’s results only confirm that I was indeed correct.
I do not believe that continuing to campaign and therefore continuing to sling arrows at the person who will be (and essentially is) the GOP nominee is good for my Party.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:49 am
I think that it is possible that the gun vote carried more weight in the South than what the media is letting on. I think this answers more to Hucks win.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:53 am
So is “conservative” talk radio going to start talking up Hillary Clinton, now that their chosen candidate has gone nowhere?
February 6th, 2008 at 2:03 am
#96 “Romney played to clean in this race.”
I nominate this for the most outrageous statement made on this site.
February 6th, 2008 at 2:05 am
I happen to agree with 96 - you wont see the backroom deals that happened with McCain - and that was part of the problem.
February 6th, 2008 at 2:06 am
Kavon…disgusting to say that you are a conservative when you support your party over principles.
enjoy making your bed with McCain, but don’t blame the true conservatives who have warned people of McCain. Either he will disappoint and lose to a DEM or if he does take the office, he will rape and abuse every principle that conservatives hold dear.
This nation should get what they deserve…they want liars as politicians. Fine, take your choice: Clinton or McCain.
They want crooks…Fine, take your choice: Clinton or McCain.
The GOP has been lied to too many times by McCain. He speaks of reaching out in bipartisianship, but tell me one single conservative issue that he has promoted through bipatisianship? Nothing. He works to accomplish the goals of DEMS, his recent cap and trade bill is the most recent of years of screwing conservatives.
Continue to follow the polls that have proven to be wrong most of this year. Let’s see if Katie Couric continues to speak positively about McCain.
God bless America. And in the words of Col. Nathan R. Jessep “You have only weakened a nation today.”
February 6th, 2008 at 6:20 am
I also can’t see anything convincing me to vote for McCain over Hillary
Really? I guess you just don’t care about:
Lower taxes
The war in Iraq
The war in Afghanistan
The size of the military
Abortion
Guns
Marriage
Congressional earmarks and spending
The PATRIOT act
Health care
etc.
I’ll feel free to disregard any of your opinions on these matters.
