  1. Mr Awesome Says:

    Cool

  2. liz Says:

Yeah but what’d he say? Did he say he’s staying in until the very end? Did he mean it? If I find it convincing, I donate immediately. Keep Hope Alive!

  3. Bryan Says:

So he’s not going to drop out?

  4. bethtopaz Says:

    Go Mitt!!!

McCain has no enthusiasm or passion from the conservative base.

He says he will reach across the aisle and work with Dems.

Hell, he is a Dem and has been for years now.

How about McCain reaches across the aisle to Republicans? And Conservative Republicans?

No way — he is too in love with himself and the drooling of liberals and the MSM.

Hey John, it’s about to stop.

  5. Bryan Says:

MSNBC now has McCain with 720 Delegates with more to come later, so how can Romney mathmatically continue in the race? It just makes no sense? Am i right?

  6. Jonathan Says:

Now Romney is letting his ego get in the way of his judgement. He had all the conservative talk radio rally to him for Super Tuesday and he still fell under the McCain tide. It’s over Governor

  7. murphy Says:

The only two people in this race who have shown they have the muscle for an uphill fight are McCain and Romney. Unfortunately, McCain’s fight is with conservatives.

    GO TEAM MITT!

  8. Bryan Says:

    bethtopaz,

Relax buddy, mitt is not going anywhere. McCain is our Republican Nominee, unless my math is wrong?

  9. murphy Says:

    Bryan,

It is incredibly difficult for Romney to win the delegate count. Not going to happen.

But keeping McCain under a majority is still possible, where Romney still has a shot in the convention if things go very well over the next few months.

  10. Jonathan Says:

#9 That is a plausible scenario, if Huckabee also stays in. Isn’t it ironic, Romney wanted the Huckster out last week to make it a two man race, but now he needs him in the race to deprive McCain of going over the top.

  11. MittinDenialisPitiful Says:

My feeling is that the man is nuts and his top advisors are
not getting through to the shifty-eyed nervous deluded case.
Isn’t it clear to all of you that he is in severe denial
and with his personality, people around him are humoring him while
looking at him with utter pity.
He needs psychiatric help, seriously, to deal with this reality.
    He has NO chance.
    His camp even knows this.
    This was his big dream.
He cannot accept a life just full of grandchildren and
a wife with a debilitating progressive disease.
He wants this so bad he can taste it.
I actually feel sorry for him, it is a huge hard fall
    for him now.

  12. Bryan Says:

    murphy,

But that would damage the party dont you think? The democrat’s are looking like there going all the way to the convention, so why not just coalesce around McCain, and have McCain choose either Romney or Huck as his VP, then that gives us plenty of time to get lots of money and plan for whoever the Democratic nominee is. I just feel like if this goes on then it only damages the party, thats just my opinion.

  13. murphy Says:

    Jonathan, quite ironic indeed.

Too many people are confusing ego with determination. Once it actually becomes impossible for Romney to win, expect him to drop out graciously.

Until then, keep in mind a Romney family saying. “If a Romney drowns, look for his body upstream”.

  14. Heath Says:

    Ridiculous.

  15. murphy Says:

Bryan: so why not just coalesce around McCain, and have McCain choose either Romney or Huck as his VP…

    1. Settling for McCain is not what this country needs.
    2. Romney’s not in this for prestige…a neutered VP role where he can’t fix Washington is useless.
    3. Huckabee as a possible VP makes me want to fight BEYOND the point of mathematical impossibility.

  16. eptx Says:

    Jonathan,
I think you are on the mark. If Huckabee drops now, it’s another signal that he and McCain are collaborating.

  17. David Says:

I don’t know if he’s in “denial,” but his campaign advisors certainly have no incentive to tell him to stop, as long as he’s still writing checks to them. But he’s a big boy and can make his own decisions.

  18. Jonathan Says:

The schedule now helps McCain even more. He will most likely sweep the Chesapeake Primary, take KS, and win big in Wisconsin and Washington State. Those five-six contests could give McCain the 1191 delegates he needs to be the GOP nominee. TX, OH, and OA would just be mop-up operations.

  19. Bryan Says:

Isnt it impossible now that Romney will not win this thing?

    Jason,

Any word on any Ad buy’s for Romney in Virginia now that McCain has gone up with 3 Ads there?

  20. Bryan Says:

    Jonathan,

I agree with most your predictions, but Kansas is a very Conservative state, but Romney and Huck and McCain could all split and then with McCain taking most of the moderates he could still come out on top in Kansas, but it is a very Conservative state, Brownback should help McCain there though.

  21. murphy Says:

    Bryan #19, see #9.

  22. Richard P Says:

I like it. I hope Romney stays in to ensure that Huckabee has no possibility of getting near the ticket. This is Romney’s new goal. I can handle McCain, but gets anywhere close I will either stay home, or vote for the Democrat (this will only happen if Huckabee is the VP).

  23. Jonathan Says:

I also predict that Bob Dole may endorse Sen. McCain before the KS caucus and that plus Brownback will give him the Sunflower State

  24. Richard P Says:

    Oops, but *if Huck* gets

  25. Jason Bonham Says:

One reason for Mitt to stay in is if he drops out now, Huck will kick the sand in his face, claim he was the second place choice, and hold that over his head in 2012.

  26. Bryan Says:

    Jonathan,

Yea a Bob Dole endorsement would be nice but i doubt it.

  27. Bryan Says:

So if Huck drops out in the near future, then everyone is in agreement that Romney would follow?

  28. Jonathan Says:

I don’t think so, Romney might think that he can bounce back in a one-on-one contest against McCain, which is folly but who knows?

  29. Jason Bonham Says:

    Bryan,

Does it matter what we agree to?

  30. Greg Says:

Romney will stay and make McCain choose Huckabee as VP at the end of the day. If McCain needed Huckabee so badly until now, then he’s going to have to take him all the way. That’s a losing ticket, but one that McCain would be forced to accept. Then, in 2012, Romney can run again and McCain and Huck will have been branded losers.

  31. Greg Says:

You all have to consider the McCain rage factor. There is still a good possibility that McCain may say or do somethig stupid between now and the convention. It’s not like he doesn’t have a history of doing such things. If he does so, Romney can be there, waiting.

All in all, I think Romney can continue to be the conservative alternative and set himself up for 2012. Afterall, he lost to ted Kennedy before he became governor. If nothing else, he’ll have name recognition going into 2012.

  32. ElectionNightHQ.com (McCain site) Publisher Says:

I found this link on the ‘08 Wire Widget, as providing some info as to what’s going on w/ Mitt:

    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/02/romney-not-dead.html

  33. Swint Says:

How do I get a ticket, can I be a blogger there? I live and work right around Baltimore.

By the way, I would drop out if I were Mitt. Cut your loses, bow out gracefully, expect McCain to lose in November and run in 2012.

  34. Swint Says:

25, good point, I freaking hate Huckabee.

  35. Bryan Says:

Thanks for the link Election Night, hope you had a safe celebration last night and didnt drink to much! it was certainly a great night for us McCainiac’s!

  36. ElectionNightHQ.com (McCain site) Publisher Says:

Thanks, Bryan. I remain cautiously optimistic…

  37. Aron Goldman Says:

Romney Prepared to Keep On Going
    http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02/06/romney-prepared-to-keep-on-going/

They are mapping out a farfetched possibility premised on conservative fears continuing to fester against Mr. McCain, which they hope fuels a series of wins for Mr. Romney and then perhaps get him to a point where he has enough momentum to wrest some of those promised but not officially bound delegates into his column at a contested convention.

Romney Fighting All The Way To The Convention?

  39. Aron Goldman Says:

West Virginia Conservatives Reject ‘Conviction-less’ Romney, Embrace Huckabee

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/article/west-virginia-conservatives-reject-convictionless-romney-embrace-huckabee_466800_1.html

  40. MetroRepublican Says:

#37: That strategy would have a prayer if it were not tied to the despised Mitt Romney.

  41. Bryan Says:

But its Mathematically impossible? I dont understand what Romney’s goal’s are? I think its reasonable to assume that Romney is only hurting the Republican Party by continuing to stay in this race, especailly if he continues to attack McCain day in and day out. I’ll gladly let Romney borrow my calculator, and show him the math doesnt add up, its impossible for him to win?

  42. Swint Says:

39, what a joke, Mitt won among the first choice voters. It took a back room deal in a smoke filled room to get Huckabee the win.

That said, I love you Mitt, but it is time to go. Although, at the same time, you should go after Huckabee goes. Basically stop spending money and just stay afloat until Huck drops out.

  43. Swint Says:

41- I think if Huck were out, Mitt would be out too. I think Mitt want to be the last one out to set up for 2012. If Huckabee lasts longer, he can then say that he is the natural choice in 12. Heaven help us if our party nominates McCain in 08 then Huckabee in ‘12. That would be the end of my affiliation with the party.

  44. MarkG Says:

Romney now has to win everything else in an overwhelming rout. This means he and his cult-of-personality followers will become even more unhinged and insufferable. Mitt will essentially make himself into the suicide bomber within the Republican party.

This type of fanatical approach makes me increasingly certain that Mitt’s campaign all has more to do with avenging Joseph Smith than anything else…

  45. liz Says:

#11 pities McCain more than I’ve heard anyone put into words, bless his heart. Sampo is giving out hugs FYI.

  46. liz Says:

McCain is no inevitable giant. He’s that little man behind the curtain, propped up by the MSM to look larger than life. And we’d do best to pay him no mind. I see a huge match-up between the true conservatives of talk radio against the MSM talking heads, McCain and Romney just become their pawns. But ultimately, if Romney wins, conservatives win.

  47. bethtopaz Says:

Bryan - the Republican Party is already hurting with John McCain being hoisted on the Conservative Republicans (the base) by the liberal MSM, and liberal independent and moderate voters.

He is NOT the choice of the base and nothing is going to change it.

    WE. DO. NOT. TRUST. HIM!!

P.S. Why doesn’t Huckabee drop out? He’s running LAST!

  48. bethtopaz Says:

#39 - shame on you! you know that’s not why they voted for Huckabee. Anyway, in the first straw poll Mitt came in first. It was only when word went out from McCain to his supporters to vote for Huckabee that Huckabee won West Virginia!!!

    It’s not nice to lie.

  49. SDGOP Says:

You mccainiacs can have the nomination after mccain gets 1191 delegates. Not a minute before.

  50. liz Says:

Beth, we are hoping that Huckabee stays in long enough for a brokered convention. Problem is, both he and McCain are outta cash. Hopefully Huck can scrape up a few pennies to keep it going another month or so.

  51. liz Says:

#44 keep your religious struggles personal, will you? Huckabee struggles with that too.

  52. Mike Says:

Romney will exit the race by the end of the week unless he plans on forever tarnishing his reputation among Republicans.

  53. Jonathan Says:

#48 beth: so what? Someone had to get 50% of the vote and McCain wasn’t going to win and his campaign made a calculated effort to beat his strongest challenger. Politics isn’t a beanbag, this is a tough business and if you can’t stand the heat get out of the political kitchen.

  54. Hobie Swanson Says:

Come on. We all know why Romney and Huck are staying in this. Neither have a shot at an outright win of delegates.

    This is the scenario:
Huck will drop out the day after Romney drops out after securing a deal with McCain to be VP (call it arkansas politics but Huck is good. Super Tuesday should confirm this)

Mitt is in simply to set up something in the future and Huck is in simply to get the VP slot.

  55. vallon Says:

    I’m sending him money…
    Good work Mitt….

Mitt…ask Fred to be your VP now and do something to really shake this up.

and #40 Metro, he is not despised in any state where he’s lived or people have gotten to know him. Can you say “Romney won Michigan, Massachusetts, and Utah where he has spent most of his life” over and over again until you get this.

  56. bethtopaz Says:

#52 - Why would staying in the race till the convention tarnish Romney’s reputation with Republicans?

What’s wrong with staying in it til the end — he’s in second place, for pete’s sake!

And if Romney had all the liberal MSM love that McCain has he would easily be in first place.

  57. MetroRepublican Says:

vallon, that’s what I HAVE been repeating: the ONLY primaries (as opposed to caucuses) that Mitt has won has been his own 3 homestates.

    That is a massive rejection.

Someone you people take it positively.

Never seen such a bunch of self-deluded people until I ran into you Rombots.

  58. Jared Says:

As a result of this race, I have grown to loathe politics. People always ask why the most qualified, and best people don’t run for public office. Well, this is the first time in decades that someone as qualified, and sharp minded as Mitt Romney has thrown his hat in the ring, and the career politicians, and their supporters, have smeared him to no end, and to me it is no wonder why the most talented minds work in the private sector, and stay the hell away from politics. I will not cast a vote for McCain, simply due to his smug attitude, and his cockiness towards the conservative base of the party. I will never cast a vote for Huckabee because of his masked bigotry throughout this race towards Mormonism. If now is the time for the Republican party to be cleansed, then so be it. I cannot, and will not associate myself with the GOP until they pull their heads out, and start focusing on conservative values, rather than electability. Can anyone suggest a nice 3rd party to get behind?

Romney’s White House bid in doubt after losses
    http://www.reuters.com/article/bondsNews/idUSN0646476320080206?sp=true

  60. bethtopaz Says:

Jonathan (53), if you would read the comment that I was responding to, you would understand what I was talking about.

    Check these out in order:

#39: West Virginia Conservatives Reject ‘Conviction-less’ Romney, Embrace Huckabee

#48: 39 - shame on you! you know that’s not why they voted for Huckabee. Anyway, in the first straw poll Mitt came in first. It was only when word went out from McCain to his supporters to vote for Huckabee that Huckabee won West Virginia!!!

#53: #48 beth: so what? Someone had to get 50% of the vote and McCain wasn’t going to win and his campaign made a calculated effort to beat his strongest challenger. Politics isn’t a beanbag, this is a tough business and if you can’t stand the heat get out of the political kitchen.

    *******************
Jonathan, after reading the sequence, do you understand that I am not criticizing the deal McCain and Huckabee made? I am refuting the claim that Aaron made his comment (#39).

It’s always good to read things in context. I have a hard time with this sometimes, too.

  61. MetroRepublican Says:

    #57 Someone=somehow

  62. Aron Goldman Says:

    Beth,

You’re right. It’s always good to read things in context. Did you bother to click on the link in #39?

  63. JFB Says:

It’s pretty funny how many of you are saying that Romney must get out now but are not saying the same thing about the 3rd place guy. And as for the good of the party…

  64. Dave Says:

I believe that McCain offered Huckabee the Vice-Presidency long ago….it’s about the only way that subsequent events make any sense. I believe that Romney knows this, or strongly suspects it, and I believe that that is why he’s staying in. If McCain goes over 1191 delegates, Mitt will bow out, although he probably won’t endorse McCain while doing so. I also think that a McCain/Huckabee ticket can win in November….more’s the pity.

  65. Illinoisguy Says:

The dishonesty, lies, an distortions on here by the Romnots are disgusting. If the shoe fits, wear it, if not, then I’m not talking to you.

  66. Erik Says:

    #25 Jason,

I agree. No way can Romney get out before Huck. Mitt is in second place right now. Plus if he focused his message on the spreading of conservative principles it will move him in the right direction towards 2012. Stay in there MITT!

  67. BSL Says:

MarkG — Avenging Joseph Smith? wow, now the desperation really starts. I thought I’d heard it all…but now Mitt’s campaign may be about avenging Joseph Smith, “more than anything else”? Way to show your true colors. Classy

  68. Erik Says:

#52 Why does that not apply to Huckabee???

  69. Erik Says:

#52 Why does this apply only to Romney??? He is in second place ahead of Huck who has no intentions of dropping out. Hypocracy at it’s greatest.

  70. Psycheout Says:

The denial sure is thick around here.

  71. Hobie Swanson Says:

    #64
If Romney wants anything in the future, he will have to endorse someone or something (e.g. party). He will have to find a way to endorse McCain without endorsing him. (he should talk to huckabee for advice :-) )

If Obama picks someone as smart as he is and as charismatic it’s hard for me to believe that two guys who are old (one older than the other) and that are not as smart can beat the hope-monger.

  72. vallon Says:

    57 Metro,
Your comment doesn’t make sense…when people get to know Romney they like him as evidenced by your comment.

  73. Tony Says:

Metro’s constant capitalization of key words makes it sound like he’s lecturing to a bunch of children. :)

I will say this about McCain - I wouldn’t mind having Cindy McCain as First Lady. Much better than having a certain Clinton as First Laddy.

  74. MetroRepublican Says:

vallon, OK, great once Mitt has lived in most of the states in the union, you can make that particular argument for his electability.

  75. econ grad stud Says:

    #73 Tony,

That type of capitalization for emphasis is common in the advertising world. Is Metro an advertising exec?

  76. bethtopaz Says:

#62 - yes, Aaron, I did and I read it. And I’m sure I’m going to take the word of Huckabee’s spokesman — the same Huckabee who is so obviously doing John McCain’s bidding and is obviously hoping to be his VP.

The same Huckabee who has a penchant for deception - like saying he decided not to run a negative ad about Romney and then proceeded to show it.

How is it that the results of the West Virginia caucus were:

    Huckabee 567 52%
    Romney 521 47%
McCain 12 1% — John McCain only gets 1% in the second vote?!
