Romney to Endorse McCain Tonight in Baltimore?

Last night, Jason noted that Mitt Romney had scheduled an appearance at the Baltimore GOP Lincoln Day Dinner later tonight. Well, according to the Baltimore Sun, John McCain has just been added to the same event as well. That has increased speculation that there could be a joint appearance and/or an endorsement there. I guess we’ll know in a few hours.

UPDATE: It looks like the speculation will prove to be correct. The McCain campaign just sent out a press release touting a “major endorsement” in Baltimore tonight:

U.S. Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign today announced that John McCain will receive a major endorsement and make remarks to the Baltimore County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner today, Thursday, February 7th.

  1. David Says:

No, that’s not going to happen. It’s already been reported that Romney won’t attend the dinner tonight, so Mac can have the stage with the former governor, who’s endorsing him.

  2. Truth Says:

Romney supporters are welcome at Huckabee’s campaign: http://www.mikehuckabee.com

  3. Bryan Says:

I also just saw on the McCain website that he will be recieving a HUGE Endorsement tonight at that event in Baltimore. I hope Romney does endorse McCain tonight, that would be great for the Republican Party.

  4. Jonathan Says:

Well Romney knows how to end a campaign in a great way. We can win this thing in November only if we unite as a party. Now is that time.

  5. grandma T Says:

Huckabee will be next to get the attack ads.

  6. Donny Says:

Nope, not Romney. Just the former governor. Saw that Huckabee is already contacting Romney’s unpledged delegates in Michigan trying to get them to switch to his campaign. Looks like the Huckster is pressing on…?

  7. econ grad stud Says:

If Romney endorses McCain this soon it will hurt Romney’s political aspirations.

He needs to wait until conservatives don’t despise McCain.

  8. Aron Goldman Says:

I suspect David is correct in #1.

Former Governor Ehrlich “bummed” over Giuliani’s Drop-out

  9. grandma T Says:

    #6 WHY???

  10. RayinNH Says:

Romney is going to hold out for some time. By not explicitly endorsing he is able to have some influence at the RNC and hopefully enables him to make an “it’s the economy stupid” speech.

  11. Bryan Says:

Once Huck loses in the next 7 primaries and caucuses over the next 4 days, McCain will have almost over 1000 Del’s maybe even more than that. Then it would be enormously doubtful that Huck could catch up, Huck would be down by nearly 800 Delegates.

  12. mike Says:

#2 That’s a good one. Just need a little mouth rinse to clear the taste of the vomit.

  13. Bryan Says:

Also dont forget Hawaii’s Caucuses are being held tonight with their 20 Delegates.

  14. fran Says:

Like I said earlier…You might as well be inviting us to support Alan Keyes.

Both have the same shot at the nomination.

  15. Paul8148 Says:

Looks like Allen will be with McCain at Cpac.

  16. Axel G. (Independent) Says:

    What do endorsements matter now?

  17. Romney drops out, to endorse McCain in Baltimore tonight? Says:

  18. Erik Says:

I love the position that Romney has Huckabee in. His line about loving America is only going to make Huck look like a selfish prick who loves himself more than the country…BTW you will be hard pressed to find any Romney supporters move to Huck. He is as filthy if not more than the McCrappster. Romney 2012.

  19. Bryan Says:

    Paul8184,

Where did you see that at. George Allen will be with McCain at CPAC?

  20. Truth Says:

Rush just came-up with Obama’s new campaign slogan, “A vote for Hillary is a vote for McCain!” How true. McCain’s only chance of winning is a Hillary nomination.

  21. Chad Says:

    Edit: Don’t come back Chad.-KWN

  22. Jonathan Says:

So new question: when will the Huckster drop out? After Chesepeake primary or after TX?

  23. Jonathan Says:

Chad: to put it simply SHUT UP AND PISS OFF!

  24. fredo Says:

    21 Chad

    Glad to hear from you.

  25. Hobie Swanson Says:

Well Chad you will finally have some company.

  26. Truth Says:

#21–cut that shit out. Alienating Romney supporters will do us a disservice in the general election. I hope you’re better than that . . . .

  27. fredo Says:

    21/24

That was sarcasm, by the way.

  28. Donny Says:

Could it be that Fred will endorse McCain tonight? That could make sense given the day’s developments.

  29. mike Says:

I say Mitt doesn’t have to endorse…he can just sit quietly and wait for McCain to approach him. That is what conservatives ought to do…wait silently for McCain to make his case. The shut up and calm down approach is not going to get my vote.

  30. fran Says:

Why does anyone have to endorse at this point?

  31. Jonathan Says:

#29: Why should McCain go to Romney? He is the one who just dropped out

  32. Chris Says:

At this point endorsements help more for the general election than the primaries. The more endorsements McCain gets, the fewer people there are that will sit our in Nov.

  33. Chris Says:

If Mccain wants any chance beating Hillary in Nov. he will need the half of the GOP that voted for Romney on his side, not against him.

  34. Hollydoll Says:

Before reading his speech, I had vowed to never vote for McCain, and write Mitt’s name in. But after seeing Romney’s unselfish act and “listening” (in every sense of the word) to what he had to say, does he truly have to come out and endorse McCain to get us to follow suit. He knows we can think for ourselves. If we truly support Romney, lets make sure that his sacrifice has not gone in vain. I still say Go Mitt!! 2012 (McCain can’t have 8 good years left. We’d have an 80 yr old president!)

  35. k brooks Says:

I’m sorry for the Romney supporters to have lost their candidate, but am also very happy that HUCKABEE is staying in the race. We need a SANE option, not someone who is going to be happy shipping our citizens out to die in wars for the next 100 years. Good luck to the Romney supporters, who ever you choose to go with in the fall.

  36. John Galt Says:

i think i am going to throw up. romney is really bitting the bullet here.

i heard that his senior staffers and mccain senior staffers are in vp talks alread. i also heard that mccain senior staffers just laugh at the though of a huckabee vp slot. that is probably why huck is fighting for the delegates to force it. all he cares about is himself.

romney was unselfish to drop out.

i can see why mccainw ould pick romney. he has earned the trust of conservatives. he also has the money making abilities and organization that mccain probably can’t win without. mccain will REALLY struggle raising enough money to compete next year with conservatives not likinghim. they will likely vote for him but not donate or volunteer. that hurts.

i still dout mccain romney but i can see the logic.

  37. John Galt Says:

btw, as a romney supporter i will never go to huck campaign. it was his behind the scene anti mormon campaign that created one of the biggest hurdles for romney to overcome and probably spelled his demise.

Huckabee’s anti mormon campaign strategy is disgusting. everybody knows, except thosee shoe pastors told them to vote for huck that he is a joke and has not shot at ever being the gop nominee or winning a presidential election.

  38. John Galt Says:

rumors is among romney staffers is that there will be a romney endorsement of mccain. after today’s speech i can see how that is probably true.

  39. MiddleRoadModerate Says:

I am sorry to say that I will leave the Republican party today to become an Independent.
I can not and WILL not vote for McCain, I also cannot vote for Huckabee who knowingly
acted as a spoiler in this campaign. These 2 have constantly put the personal interests
before the country’s or the party’s. If I have to vote for a liberal it will be a real
one not a dishonest one like McCain.

  40. David Says:

Did Romney broker a deal with McCain for a McCain Romney ticket because the Huckster was a such a pain?

  41. VeritasPoliticus Says:

Delegates do not transfer. Regardless of what the MSM reports,
McCain will not “pick up” the Romney delegates. Huckabee should
stay in the race regardless of this endorsement. He has just as
much chance to pick up the delegates at the convention as anyone
    else.

Second vote at the convention will decide where these delegates go.
    Not the media.

  42. Clint H Says:

Just heard on Fox News that MITT will endorse McCain and McCain may ask him to be VP to heal the conservative rift. I think this is a great choice. Now the ticket will be able to talk about the ECONOMY and the WAR of TERROR more effectively.

I will vote for this ticket in NOV.

Why is it not surprising that a Mormon proves himself to be an unprincipled opportunist? Must have been another heavenly message from Moroni.

  46. Clint H Says:

    Stardust,

You’re a bigot and what does religion have to do with this? You evangelist have only hurt yourselves this year by being so hateful and totally un Christ like. Who is the christian now? Certainly not you.
