Wonderful. John McCain has rarely captivated me personally, but I was in shivers here. Positively Churchhillian. “So we’ve gotta show him the facts on the ground!” Goosebumps.

I still think every time McCain speaks on Iraq, he loses. The war is so unpopular, people understand that the “promise of victory” requires hundreds of billions of more taxpayer dollars spent in Iraq and hundreds, perhaps thousands of more lives lost.
Even with the best spin, his position will be unpopular:
“McCain’s wants to stay in Iraq until no more Americans are getting killed, no matter how long it takes and how many Americans get killed achieving that goal—that is, the goal of not getting any more Americans killed. And once that goal is achieved, we’ll stay.”
On a side note, his Patraeus-hero-worship is annoying and excessive. Yes Patraeus is a great General, and should have been in charge long ago. But what the hell? It seems like McCain is servile to him, and would never have the nerve to question or stand up to him in the future. McCain’s running to be Patraeus’ boss, not a member of his royal court.
OK I’ve said a zillion times I won’t vote for McCain. This, however, is compelling. He’s a one issue candidate, that’s for sure, patriotism and national security, that’s his issue.
I’ll vote for him if the VP choice is right. And yes that means very conservative. Not Giuliani or Huckabee conservative, I mean really conservative.
Oh and talking about hero (self)-worship, what about Obama? Mr. Elite has clearly forgotten he is working as a public servant. Don’t even equate McCain with Obama’s royal attitude.
Maya, A Democrat majority and President, can change this country drastically. If Obama is elected and Dem’s make the gains that are predicted in both houses, you better be ready for socialized health-care, drivers licenses for illegals, massive tax hikes, gay marriage and adoption, and a smaller military.
And dont forget about Liberal’s on the supreme court, that is the one thing that drives me crazy about Conservatives who say they are going to sit this one out. I say to them, ok go ahead and sit this one out, there are already 2 very old liberal justices on the supreme court, and any chance of replacing them with conservative judges to overturn roe v. wade is gone with the wind my friend. This election is so crucial when it comes to the supreme court and Obama would LIberalize it big time, so we cant afford to take that chance at all.
I well understand the threat of a liberal takeover. Doesn’t anyone think, perchance, that McCain is part of that takeover? I didn’t pick him as the conservative candidate. I haven’t heard from a conservative that did support him. So what happened? Admittedly, there is not much to do from “average citizen” level other than complain, and not donate. I’m doing plenty of both. But McCain is not the answer, and if he is, he has put forth an anemic argument at best.

Well done, J-Mac.
As an aside, Robert Novak has his preliminary electoral college outlook up and ready to go.

This is a primary reason I decided to vote for McCain after all. He’s good on some things, and some of the things he’s good on are very important.

McCain has a profound misunderstanding of the Constitution.
