Rasmussen Illinois General Election

  • John McCain 37%

With Leaners

  • Barack Obama 52%
  • John McCain 41%

Favorable / Unfavorable (Net)

  • Barack Obama 60% / 38% (+22%)
  • John McCain 60% / 38% (+22%)

Survey of 500 likely voters was conducted July 8. The margin of error is +/- 4.5 percentage points.

As in many states, Obama has a strong lead among women in Illinois, but not among men. He leads 55% to 35% among women, but just 43% to 40% among male voters.

The two candidates are essentially tied among voters not affiliated with either major political party.

While 31% of Illinois voters believe McCain is too old to be president, 38% think Obama is too inexperienced for the job.

  1. Clarence Claus Says:

McCain obviously won’t take Illinois, but this continues the pattern of Obama slipping.

  2. B Werty Says:

Not that it matters in the overall scheme of things (obviously IL is an Obama lock) but I thought Obama would be up by a much larger margin than that in Illinois - at least 20%+ since it’s his home state (Gore won by 12, Kerry won by 10). But this would seem to discredit Chuck Todd’s “Illinois border bounce” theory since it doesn’t even look like it’s applicable in Illinois itself.

  3. cwpete Says:

Obama is barely getting 50% in his own home state? John McCain has an equal favorably rating of 60%? I’m scratching my head at that one. Maybe most of the Jesse Jackson clan are withholding their support..

  4. Clarence Claus Says:

I wonder if Obama’s getting smoked in Southern Illinois.

  5. OHIO JOE Says:

It depends what you mean by smoked, Mr. Obama is not winning the Sourthern part of the state. Unfortunately, the state gets decided in the north.

  6. Kay Says:

#5 is correct, Mr. O is not going to win southern IL, but we have quite a few friends and/or relatives in Chicago that normally vote dem and this time around they will not be voting for Obama.

  7. OHIO JOE Says:

That sounds like good news Kay, perhaps they can vote for Republicans down the ballot as well.

  8. Kay Says:

It is good news and I’d like nothing more than see the state go Republican, but that’s only a dream what with Chicago and the IL St.Louis burbs.

  9. BobH Says:

This poll is surprising to me, as well. But let’s not take one poll in July too seriously.

  10. Donald Says:

Shocking… hopefully the people gloating over McCain’s similar lead in AZ will stfu now.
