The New York Times editorial board has gotta be kidding me:
[T]here was something surreal, and offensive, about today’s soundbite from the campaign of Senator John McCain.
The presumptive Republican nominee has embarked on a bare-knuckled barrage of negative advertising aimed at belittling Mr. Obama. The most recent ad compares the presumptive Democratic nominee for president to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton — suggesting to voters that he’s nothing more than a bubble-headed, publicity-seeking celebrity.
The ad gave us an uneasy feeling that the McCain campaign was starting up…[a] racially tinged attack on Mr. Obama…
I have no words.

I was expecting it. You put a white woman in an ad against a black candidate some people leap to the racism issue. Remember that ad against Ford in ‘06? Chris Matthews went on for days about it.
July 31st, 2008 at 10:09 pm
if it’d been a black person used, they would have cried racism. if they had used a mix race person like derek jeter or mariah carey, they’d cry racism. you just cant win with some people.
July 31st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
NYT is little more than an organ of the DNC. And if this is the tack they’re going to take it’s going to backfire. McCain and Co. didn’t say or do anything racist. Anyone not already solidly behind Obama knows it. An obvious false cry of racism can only breed resentment. Let them try to make this case.

Obama is the one being racist here.

Oh well, I guess McCain has lost his shot at the NYT endorsement this fall.
Seriously, who cares about the NYT? Their circulation is imploding.
If they had any influence at all we would all be talking about Pres Kerry’s reelection right now, or VP Lieberman’s nomination because we all recall how effevtive the NYT was at getting Gore and Kerry elected.
The real news among newspapers will be made in the fall when the Washington Post endorses John McCain for President.
Obama playing the race card is the first sign he’s worried. That’s always been their fail-safe. He used it against the Clintons after he lost in NH and needed a big win in SC and to get the black vote on his side for the post 2/5 states.
But it won’t work now because the Clinton supporters all loathe him for it and the black vote in the general is a fraction of what is was in the dem primary. This will only further alienate white voters.
He’s panicking.
Hopefully he picks Kaine and falls behind in the polls a few pts, allowing McCain to lock up the election by picking Powell and cruising to victory.
July 31st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Maybe Obama is racist against himself?
He’s always making an issue of it & you know what – the McCain boosters will start to heat up like they did during the primary.
I know the McCain campaign is reading this – Johnny Mac put on a hard hat and head to an offshore oil rig; head over to the Rocky Mountains and educate the American people on the use and abundance of shale oil and how that could assist the Colorado, et. al. economies (a win in Colorado, et. al.); educate the American people on nuclear energy and how France and other countries are successful on such; go to ANWAR with a winter coat & hat. Last but not least, it all can be done in an environmentally friendly fashion.
July 31st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
As we know, the Dems have been blocking shale oil production as well:

I’m totally agog. I know it’s the NYT and I should expect nothing less, but accusing Rick Davis of racism because he used a phrase that was once used to describe the OJ trial, never mind that the phrase had entered the lexicon long, long before that? Totally, completely unbelievable. Pathetic. NYT, Obama, the whole lot… pathetic.
July 31st, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Fortune: Why do you consider developing oil shale such a high priority?
Sen. Hatch: We have as much oil in oil shale in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado as the rest of the world’s oil combined. Liberals and environmentalists can talk all they want about wind, solar and geothermal – all of which I’m for – but last time I checked, planes, trains, trucks, ships and cars don’t run on electricity. 98% of transportation fuel right now is oil. Ethanol is the only real alternative, and we’re seeing that ethanol has major limitations.

The interview with Palin was pretty impressive. Thanks for the link. I’m not sure if she’s VEEP material, but she’s a very likable, youthful personality. I’d vote McCain/Palin.
July 31st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
#17, at the end of the show, Larry Kudlow endorsed Palin for VP.
July 31st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Nice. I think Jindal would be a better Veep (and better president for that matter)…have you heard the guy speak? He’s absolutely brilliant. Palin may just have what McCain needs, though…she’s my top pick for that reason. I still think it will be Romney or Pawlenty though. I go back and forth between the two depending on the day.
July 31st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Anyone see david Shuster (msnbc) discuss this video saying that everyone is mad and against it, even republican leaders? Is he a puppet for Obama. What a protégé of Keith obermann?
July 31st, 2008 at 11:16 pm
It’s not going to be Palin. Fairly or not she has a disqualifying scandal over her head until at least November.
She’s out of the running.
July 31st, 2008 at 11:30 pm
powell would undercut obama in every way, come on general, we all know it should have u to be the first
August 1st, 2008 at 12:41 am
#1 – Thanks for the video, Joel. (That’s my son’s name, by the way.) I like Palin. She’s attractive, well spoken, down to earth and I would be pleased if she was McCain’s VP. Even happier if she was Mitt’s VP in 2012! Romney/Palin … hmmm. Nice.
Anyway, I digress. It seems like she is happy being governor of Alaska and it seems like it would be good to get a successful governorship under her belt before moving on. Just like Jindal. They both have bright futures, but why rush things … like Obama, who climbs the ladder to one position, only to start climbing again to a higher one — never staying long enough to establish himself or accomplish anything substantial for those he represents.
August 1st, 2008 at 12:51 am
BTW, are we sure she was ever pregnant?
I mean apparently no one knew or realized for 7 months and if you look at her now, and even after she gave birth, she seemingly lost the weight immediately.
I mean you look at that video and it’s hard to believe she gave birth a few months ago
That’s quite the fitness regimen there
August 1st, 2008 at 12:59 am
#24, actually yes, she is a fitness fanatic. She runs marathons, among competing in other sports.
August 1st, 2008 at 7:02 am
Palin is attractive and sweet. But she is Governor of America’s smallest state for a couple of years. Before that, Mayor of Wasilla where the Iditerod dog race begins. What is the point, folks? If she was a guy, she wouldn’t remotely be on the radar. So, it’s pandering of the very worst kind and would be viewed that way by the voters.Again, I have to strss the following:
McCain is 71 with a host of health difficulties.
The VP is one misfortune away from being the CEO of the world’s largest company, the head of the world’s biggest employer, the CFO of the world’s biggest budget and Commander in Chief of the world’s greatest military.
Sarah Palin ‘aint ready to be that person. Not many people are.
The truth is , we are not as selective as we ought to be about who sits in the WH. Experience and competence have often been disregarded in favor of attractiveness and good looks. We have seen our last Lincoln. That’s for sure!
August 1st, 2008 at 7:37 am
Joel,
All the discussion of Sarah Palin reminds me of an old Jimmy Stewart movie, ” Mr. Deeds Goes to Washington”, remade with Sally Fields instead of Stewart. Fun for Hollywood, not with a nuclear armed Iran and $200 per barrel oil
August 1st, 2008 at 9:08 am
craig, if you keep that attitude, Obama will be President. This election is about character, personality and judgement. That is what McCain is attacking Obama on and Obama attacking McCain on.
You need to understand this. I will take Palin over the boys being mentioned because she has the judgement and character to be President.
Unlike Romney, Huckabee and other, Palin is a neo-con and will not allow iran to get the “bomb”.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0708/12224.html
This is the two politico writers, Ben Smith and Jonathan Martin, writing about Obama calling the “celeb” ad run against him a racially tinged attack. Kind of interesting that the conclusion is McCain won some points by getting Obama to call it racist when no reasonable person sees it that way.
Obama is starting to look like he’s “crying wolf.”
August 1st, 2008 at 2:06 pm
I honestly thought, at the start of this campaign season, that “post-racial” Barack Obama would move us past this stupid race baiting game. Now, I have a bad feeling that every criticism of Obama is going to met (with Obama’s subtle approval) with charges of “racist.”
Ugh. Why do liberals have to be so stupid…
