This is a good ad, do we know what states this ad will be running in Kavon? I think the line “the original maverick” is really good and will hit home with alot of people IMO. Good Ad.
That ad was terrible. So, he is going to be for drilling while “taking on the oil companies”? Please. Sen. McCain
please stop this non-sense. Supply and demand determine oil prices, not a bunch of evil oil barons sitting around
a smoke filled room.
What are the odds McCains next ad talks about “big labor” or “taking on the radical enviromentalists” or how
about “standing up to fight the trial lawyers”?
McCain using the “Washington is Broken” line says to me Romney will be Veep.
Just guessing this ad is a way to “blur” the differences the men had, and try to combine their strengths.
I don’t like this positioning by McCain at all… it is a total turn off.. Why send a career politician back to Washington? He’s been there for 25+ years already and SUDDENLY he has all the answers? Dream on…
I was actually moving closer to voting FOR McCain and not as much AGAINST Obama, but this ad has me completely reversing and casting my vote strictly against Obama again, as it reminds me of so many of McCain’s irritating traits and behaviors.
Just when I open up that .01% to voting for McCain he reminds me again why I dispise him so much. What a fool. He keeps this nonsense up and the GOP will get what it deserves under 4 years of Barry.
First of all, McCain is a 20-year senator, he has ZERO ability to use the “change” line like Romney could, or Obama can.
Secondly, take out John McCain, toss the Maverick line, and you have a generic, ready-to-go ad for any Democrats seeking a Republican seat this year. McCain may be a reformer, but he is still a member of the Republican party, and his volunteers, money, and supporters are going to come primarily from the GOP. Bashing the situation of the last four years, saying we are worse off, etc. reflects poorly on his own party - and by association - on him.
On the other hand, in response to act-blog, maybe it diffuses the Democrat argument because McCain is making the same argument. If Americans are generally unhappy with the last few years, if you are McCain maybe you can seize on that narrative and say you were part of the minority trying to create solutions rather than the majority. This plays well into his maverick image anyway. One senator can only do so much (he’s only 1 of 100), but one president can do a lot.
#18 exactly. How can McCain seriously claim to Washington is so broken when he himself is a career politician? I understand he is promoting the idea of being a “Maverick”, but I’d expect to have seen far better results out of someone who’s spent so much time in Washington who then goes and attacks it for being utterly broken…
If you just look at the first 3 seconds (the black and white part) you almost think it is going to be an Obama ad attacking McCain. Not sure if this is intentional or not, but interesting.
“maybe it diffuses the Democrat argument because McCain is making the same argument.”
…if they are offering the same thing, Obama wins. Period. First of all, he is much more believeable when he talks about change - because he is A) not a member of the incumbent’s party, and B) not a decades-long Washington resident.

As for Romney - I don’t know what it says about him. Yes, it uses the same line, which suggests something, but it also promotes (or seems to promote) liberal economic policies of investigation, strict regulation, and demonization of profits - not things generally associated with Mitt.
Is McCain a communist candidate?….“We’re worse off than we were four years ago.” Newsflash for McCain: The whole world is having a bad time the las few years. And how is an old senator with more than 25 years in Washington not be part of the broken sisten?…The real Maverick?…I think McCain is running in the wrong party.

McCain’s second decent ad. Finally. While I have issue with some of what it says, it was an effective ad in my opinion, unlike his others.

Lets guess where Bob Herbert will find a phallic symbol in this ad?

“We’re worse off than we were four years ago.”…”Only McCain has taken on ‘Big Tobacco’, drug companies”…He’ll reform Wall Street? Battle ‘Big Oil’?”
John McCain in ‘08 — Because the alternative is unfathomable.

Interesting that he uses the line “Washington is broken”. That the line Mitt Romney was constantly using on the campaign trail.

correction: * that was the line

Emtee: exactly what I was thinking… Romney managed to inject some optimism into what came next, though.

Bad move by team McCain…

Could be effective in the Midwest and Breadbasket. Elsewhere… I’m not so sure.
August 5th, 2008 at 11:31 am
I think the McCain team should talk more about health care. It is a big issue right now, and they could do it in a way that is fiscally responsible.

This is a great ad, and shows that Obama has done nothing. This ad also tells us that Mitt has zero chance of being VP.

#25 - I assume you’re joking! This ad is a great transitional ad to bring on Romney.
August 5th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Wow, Metro and the Rombots in agreement. And me, too, it turns out.
Guess the ad could have been worse. He could have proposed holding taxpayer-funded national rain dances to fight carbon dioxide…
