Wow! With numbers like these, McCain looks solid!

  2. Kavon W. Nikrad Says:

These results are absolutely jaw-dropping… Obama needs to move these numbers back fast.

  5. cwpete Says:

With numbers like these, why is it then that McCain does not have a 9 point lead over he whose middle name must not be named?

Hey Barry O, don’t you know it’s always been a matter of trust? ;)

  8. cwpete Says:

The Bradley effect is McCain’s ace in the hole. The Bradley effect has to be something that the Obama campaign is worried about.

  9. www.act-blog.co.nr Says:

The economy and healthcare - two huge issues - two issues where Obama is tied or favored - two good reasons for McCain to pick Romney.

  10. Bryan Says:

    Act-blog,

I agree with you on that one my friend, good point!

  11. logcabingop Says:

Are these correct? Do these numbers tell us what the undecided believe?

  12. bethtopaz Says:

#9 - I just got back from getting a new Social Security card at my local office in West Sacramento and got into a conversation with a young guy from Afghanistan. He and wife and 3-month old daughter were waiting for their turn and we started to talk. Kahlil said he had been in Afghanistan for four years as a translator for the Army. I asked him what he thought about Obama. He said he liked Obama and that we needed change. Needless to say we talked for quite a while and I was able to successfully put some doubt in his mind about Obama and get his e-mail address to give him more information about BO.

He did not like McCain, did not like the war.

I told him I had wanted Romney to be the nominee for the Republicans and his whole face lit up. He said he really liked Romney. I asked him if he would vote for McCain if Romney was the VP nominee and he said (very enthusiastically) Yes!

(Planting doubt about Obama - one person at a time!)

  13. logcabingop Says:

Beth, so we need mitt to carry the Afghan American vote? LOL!

  14. terry Says:

This poll shows real movement, not just statistical noise, from Obama to McCain.

  15. bethtopaz Says:

#13 - very funny. The fact is, lcg, that this guy is a citizen and he votes and he has friends and family.

  16. AmericanIdeals Says:

“So who do you trust more on abortion?”

What kind of question is that? Trust to do what? Not a very well-worded question. I think this seems just too good a poll to be anything other than an outlier.

  17. Anne Says:

Why do people think Romney will help? Here is an article written by a townhall author, Gregg Jackson. He is a liberal and in 2005 he was rated the #8 RINO by Human Events. http://rffm.typepad.com/republicans_for_fair_medi/2008/07/what-you-would-get-in-a-vice-president-romney.html This article also tells why social conservatives can’t trust him——1. Romney illegally imposed homosexual marriage as he had secretly promised “Log Cabin Republicans” a homosexual activist group he would, given the pretext of a legally meaningless court opinion. He publicly admitted that the four outlaw judges who belched forth the Goodridge opinion (urging the legislature to make sodomy-based “marriage” legal) had violated the state Constitution and their oaths of office. But bizarrely, he flatly contradicted the state constitution he had sworn to uphold by pretending he was bound by this opinion. He also opposed a citizen-led effort to remove the four judges!

He then authorized illegal changes to, and issuance of, still legally null and void marriage licenses to homosexuals in violation of the marriage laws which the state constitution explicitly says only the legislature can change (the same court has admitted this). But Romney and his hired “conservatives” falsely claimed that “everybody (knew) that the (judges) legalized same-sex ‘marriage’.”

    2. AFTER his stage-managed “pro-life conversion” Romney’s signature healthcare plan established abortion, with a taxpayer-subsidized $50 co-pay, as a “healthcare benefit.” He also created a permanent, official government role for an unelected Planned Parenthood representative on his healthcare board — but no pro-life appointee. (Again, AFTER HIS PURPORTED “PRO-LIFE CONVERSION”).

And the Wash. Times thinks we are bigots because we won’t vote for Romney because of his faith. They have it wrong. It is because of his record stated above. That is why so-cons can not accept Rudy, Ridge, Rice, or Powell as VP also.

  18. Anne Says:

I meant to say in the first sentence that Romney was rated as # 8 RINO in 2005 by Human events, not Gregg Jackson.

  19. Anne Says:

Here is the statement by Human Events in 2005 why is was a RINO 8. Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.) Has said, “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country.” Supports civil unions and stringent gun laws. After visiting Houston, he criticized the city’s aesthetics, saying, “This is what happens when you don’t have zoning.”

  20. matt Says:

OK: How come this poll goes against almost every other poll as far as “trust” on issues is concerned? Rasmussen has always been in it for McCain…

  21. craig Says:

    Dear Anne,
    What a colossal crock.

  22. JB Says:

Mac Leading on Social Security and tied on the economy? that really makes me wonder about the rest of the numbers. I hope it’s true, but doesn’t really pass the smell test for me.

  23. ogrepete Says:

Well, I for one don’t trust McCain as much as I used to. I still trust him more than Obama, though, which isn’t saying much.

    Dear Senator McCain,

Please stop the “headfakes,” “the hints,” “the insinuations” about who you might pick as Veep. Make your choice and announce it when you feel it is appropriate. Half-way announcing it and sort of announcing through your staff, hinting here and there is really pissing me off.

    Sincerely,

Ogrepete - Republican voter for years

  24. MWS Says:

If this poll is accurate (and I agree with the others who are stunned) then Obama truly is running on a Cult of Personality.

This would help explain how McCain can run even with the media’s anointed one, in a very bad year for Republicans.

  25. Anne Says:

I think the media is promoting Obama and it makes it seem like he is leading and liked all over America, but I think in reality–he is not.

  26. Illinoisguy Says:

Anne is displaying her ignorance again, and I don’t have the patience to counter it right now.

  27. Illinoisguy Says:

Not her #25, but her other one.

  28. Gery Says:

This is quite excellent. Has anyone seen this:

    http://adage.com/campaigntrail/post?article_id=130119

Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign is buying into NBC Universal’s Olympics coverage.

The McCain campaign made a last-minute $6 million ad buy, which tops the $5 million Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign announced last month it was buying during the Olympic Games, which begin Aug. 8.

Like the Obama team’s ad buy, the McCain campaign’s purchase includes network and cable spots. NBC Universal is airing 3,600 hours of Olympics coverage on its broadcast network and cable networks including NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network, Oxygen and Telemundo.

Also find the vid and comments of him @ the famous Sturgis Motercycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota if you can. The crowd of 50k loved hime and he was quite funny and Cindy comments were quite moving.

    #21 and #26

Anne is correct. On 12/27/2005 Human Events listed their top ten RINO’s. Romney was number eight

    http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=11129

  32. Brian Says:

    WOW.

  33. BobH Says:

The fact that Mitt Romney was listed among the top ten by a major conservative publication is yet another reason he should be the VP nominee.

  34. FrankS Says:

Rasmussen polls are always suspect, but national polls are foolish at any time. Presidents are elected by electors mostly based on winner take all based on states, not national vote. Obama is so far ahead there it would take Carl Rove, the swift boaters, and Alexander Hamilton to make most Americans forget it was the Republican Party that lied us into an unnecessary war, spent us into unbelievable deficits, and engaged in so many corrupt practices - need I name them? - that they will be lucky to only lose 5 senate seats, and a dozen house seats.

  35. Dave Says:

    Texas,
So, who was the article actually written by at Human Events? Anybody can claim that someone else is a RINO, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not a cheap shot. Ann Coulter isn’t the only voice at Human Events that has been pro-Romney. Others there have opposed him throughout. BTW, was McCain on the list? And if he wasn’t, what does that say about the credibility of the list?

  36. craig Says:

I thought McCain;s claim to fame was that he could reach across the aisle and work with the Dems? I think that’s one of the reasons he is the nominee. Does Anne really think you can get elected Governor in Massachusetts and actually accomplish anything by being a down the line, 100% conservative? Be serious. One of Mitt’s strengths is flexibility. It is also a necessary strength in the White House and it is one of McCain’s strengths. I don’t really get the viewpoint of Anne and her ilk

  37. Falz Says:

Texas (31) any top-10 of Rinos that not include John McCain in the top-3 is wrong.

  38. Joe M Says:

    Exellent post, Aron
