This should be fun.
Think of McCain’s potential VPs. Create attack ads for potential candidates that the Democrats could use.
This is something that we have to be prepared for.
For instance, if McCain picked Joe Lieberman, imagine a “Kisses and Hugs for George Bush” ad. “The kiss” from Lieberman coupled with that awkward McCain hug, while quotes of their support for Bush’s policies flash over the screen. There would also be weirdly sexual overtones to it, of course, making the viewer feel uncomfortable.
Let’s say McCain picked Romney. “Foreign policy experience doesn’t matter” coupled with “economics isn’t something that I understand as well as I should”? And that doesn’t even begin to touch upon their criticisms of each other during the primary — both on a personal and substantive level.
What about Palin? Doesn’t that totally destroy the “Ready to Lead” mantra? If McCain picks a VP with less experience than Barack Obama in high office, then that gives a wide opening for Obama aides to float the idea that since McCain is so old, his VP is of special concern.
Hutchison? The Democrats wouldn’t do this on their own, but the new liberal mantra would become “Grandpa and Grandma ‘08″. Talk about a future vs. past narrative.
Now go at it.
This should be interesting…
August 27th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Mehhh… Biden kind of throws a wrench in the young vs. old meme.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
But Obama’s going to be the president.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Democrats couldn’t run much against Pawlenty. They could try to blame him for the bridge collapse but that would hurt them in Minnesota.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
#2, don’t be a snot.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
4 - I mean if Obama/Biden wins. There’s no danger of Obama dying. So no one cares.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Excellent focal point Alex, it does clarify whom The McCain Camp should be chosing. I think he’s known for some time who it was going to be, thus the line of attack they have continued to pursue against Obama/Biden.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

August 27th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Pawlenty or Palin
actually, I will be happy with anyone but Lieberman at this point, and hopefully thats why McCain keeps dropping his name
August 27th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Sorry for the double post, it’s getting late in Texas!
August 27th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
“What about Palin? Doesn’t that totally destroy the “Ready to Lead” mantra?”
She is a Governor! There is a reason Governor’s almost always win the Presidency. The “TITLE” carries so much weight (experience).
Palin, Pawlenty, Sanford, etc…..they all are immune.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
I’m sure they’d show Rudy in a few of his dresses, lipstick, and high heels.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
why is there no danger of Obama dying? He’s a long time smoker who’s mother died young of cancer and whos father died young as well. I cant imagine Kenyan males have high longevity rates.
and it’s not like being the 1st black president would have extra security risks
August 27th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
Palin:
1.) Sarah Palin fired a officer in Alaska because he wouldn’t fire her ex-brother-in-law after a family fight, and replaced him with a friend who will do her bidding. After years of Bush Administration abuse of power and cronyism (show pictures of Valerie Plame, Alberto Gonzalez, and Michael Brown) do you really want to vote for more of the same?
2.) Sarah Palin thinks that abortion should be illegal even in the case of rape or incest (show pictures of convicted child rapists). Do you really want her making that decision for you?
August 27th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Post 10
THANK YOU!!!!!!
I hate it how people keep saying this about governors. Frankly, any governor is more experienced than any senator in my book- the presidency is an EXECUTIVE position, and people who haven’t held an executive position aren’t qualified. I would add though that McCain has been a leader (in both a good and bad way) in the Senate, as opposed to Obama, who is so inexperienced that it’s comical, and Biden, who just holds committee meetings to hear himself talk. ARGH!!!
August 27th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Alex #2, 4 - If only the top of the ticket’s age matters, then your reasoning against Hutchison is flawed.
TexasTim #9 - Agreed!
August 27th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
They can’t run anything against Huckabee either.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
15 - “If only…”
No, because McCain is already old. Adding another elderly person to the ticket doubles down on the weakness.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
jim #12 - I couldn’t agree more. Obama is not immune to death. Already there have been some reports of assassination plots. It’s utterly tragic and abhorrent that such racism exists, but that doesn’t wish it away. It really is horribly sad but also horrible real.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Illinois…what do you have against a joke…it was SNL.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
#17, Alex is correct and McCain admitted it, BUT…….
Women in their 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s are the one’s luke-warm to Obama.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Romney…He spent millions of dollars to lose an election, then he spent millions more to buy a house in California…that was his money…what do you think he’ll do with yours?
August 27th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
anyone but pawlenty, he is already being laughed at and joked about
hutchison would have a real chance to capitalize on clinton anger, women’s issues, and the media would hesitate to attack because they have been labeled sexist already.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
#11. — “I’m sure they’d show Rudy in a few of his dresses, lipstick, and high heels.”
That crap works on FreeRepublic, not with the general electorate.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
#11, Rudy looked way better than Donna Hannover!
August 27th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Romney ran against Senator Edward M. Kennedy in 1994. During a debate, Romney declared: “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a US Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.”
- Boston Globe, March 2, 2006
August 27th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
“Romney has decided to support experimentation on surplus frozen embryos from in-vitro fertilization procedures.”
- National Review Online, February 11, 2005
“At a campaign appearance at Brandeis University in June 2002, Romney strongly endorsed stem cell research.”
- Boston Globe, December 17, 2006
August 27th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
I think I’ll avoid this thread — it’s going to get really ugly.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
“When he ran for governor in 2002, Romney said he supported expanding access to the emergency contraception pill, a high dose of hormones that women can take to prevent pregnancy up to five days after sex . . . On a questionnaire Planned Parenthood gave to the gubernatorial candidates in 2002, Romney answered ‘yes’ to the question, ‘Do you support efforts to increase access to emergency contraception?’ ”

So true.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Ads going after VP’s are pretty ineffective, IMO.
Does anyone know of any research on this.
I personally think McCain’s ads going after Biden’s comments on Obama were dumb, most voters realize it was when they were campaigning against each other.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
If Romney didn’t use the drag against Rudy, nobody will.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
lets just be happy romney isnt the nominee for president. he trashed everyone…. EVERYONE he ran against. mccain didnt trash anyone except romney –the one guy who deserved it.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:01 am
sampo, would you vote for McCain/Romney?
August 28th, 2008 at 12:07 am
alex, i can only hope that’s a “what if” question and never a “what now” question.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:10 am
I have a source that’s telling me that OBAMA has convinced McCain to pick him as his running mate, guaranteeing both men the victory. They’ve secretly agreed to determine who gets to be the boss after the election by holding a rock-paper-scissors match.
Seriously people, I can’t believe how much time some of you spend on this endless speculation. Dontcha all have somethin’ better to do?
/me fully realizes the hypocrisy of my statement.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:14 am
If mccain picked romney as vp i’d pull a barack obama and say: this is not the john mccain i’ve known for the past 10 years. maybe i wouldnt support him. a large part of it would be because mccain would be making such a p*ss poor decision that i could never have envisioned him making. if you think about it, all the people pimping a mccain-romney ticket are the same people who went to hell and back to prevent mccain from being the nominee. why would i respect that behavior from the talk radio blow-hards?

hey jason. isnt a “coattail rider” just a euphemism for “bottomfeeder”? we all remember how casually you’d toss that word around.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:31 am
#38, Bark…”the most jewish Jew that ever jewed.” that is the funniest thing i heard today…you should write for SNL.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:31 am

August 28th, 2008 at 12:38 am

No a coatail rider is someone who rides on the successes of another candidate to get into office. Bottom feeders are candidates like Brownback.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:39 am
44,
You forgot one more: Hizzoner.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:41 am
Jason,
I don’t like the bottom feeder reference. Personally, I prefer Switchback Sam or Samnesty Brownback.

There once was a man named McCain
The Democrats called him McSame
He chose a VP
And we all prayed that he
Had Mitt as his very first name.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:44 am
so bottom feeders strive to be winners (like brownback) and coattail riders are people who settle for first loser. got it. a vp romney will be so amazingly castrated i’d almost be embarrassed for him. how will romney be able to promise 300 billion in farmer subsidies or a few billion to stifle free trade?
anyhoo, how does it feel being a tool for the mccain administration by saying romney would be the vp? i know it must have stung to have been used by a candidate you hated so much.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:45 am

Hmmm, an attack ad against Romney? I’ll have to ponder that a bit.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:03 am

An ad along the lines of the one Ted Kennedy ran against him in ‘94 - the Ampad layoffs - is tough enough.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:09 am
70. No, that’s not what I had in mind. I’m thinking about something that people would eternally remember . . .
And when I think of Pawlenty, I think of Wonder Bread. How about a shot of Pawlenty up to his neck in white bread?
August 28th, 2008 at 2:20 am
McCain is a maverick
For sure, he’ll pick Lieberman
And there’ll be a brawl
In the halls of St. Paul
And the winner will be Huckabee
August 28th, 2008 at 2:35 am
Mike Huckabee lost lots of weight,
And thought he would win in ‘08.
The race he would master
Afterall, he was a pastor!
But lost in a great stroke of fate

We couldn’t decide on ‘The Mayor’
And Romney had “too many layers”.
Ron Paul, no, he’s crazy,
Fred Thompson? Just lazy,
And Huckabee ran on a prayer.

His selection was odd.
But he’ll lose. Not enough of a hawk.
August 28th, 2008 at 5:04 am

August 28th, 2008 at 5:40 am
Too much info IG!
Mate don’t be too upset if it’s not Mitt. If he picks Pawlenty he loses. Period.
In which case it might be best not to be tainted with a McCain loss. Seriously I know we all pretty much want McCain to win but it he doesn’t who has a chance of beating Mitt in 2012?
NO-ONE!
August 28th, 2008 at 6:02 am
#85 - I know, but its not about Mitt, its about the country. The country needs him now, not four years fromnow.
We have huge problems and no one else with the skill set to solve them.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:02 am
Yes of course. It doesn’t matter if we win or lose. All that matters is if Mitt is still viable in 2012.
The truth is that if Mitt is not the VP nominee he is done in politics. You have to go all the way back to 1968 to find a time where the Republican nominee wasn’t already in public office when nominated. And if you look back at the Democrats, Mondale seemed a little rusty in 1984.
If it’s not Mitt (and it’s not Mitt) then Mitt is not going to ever be president.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:04 am
Adam, why are you so sure its not Mitt. The gamblers still have him over 2 to 1 ahead of the next placed person.. What are you going by?

August 28th, 2008 at 6:19 am
I don’t understand what’s going on. I’m trying to reply and the system keeps deleting my comments. I’m getting annoyed.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:23 am
This is the third and last time I am going to try this.
McCain is basing a strategy on using Dems’ words against Barry. This wasn’t one or two ads. It’s been a sustained effort for twoweeks. The only candidate on our side that could undercut that is Mitt Romney. The Dems will trot out everything they can and try to beat us at our own game if Mitt is picked. Also, you don’t run a campaign with the slogan “Country First” and then pick the candidate that Democrats will easily tag as being a political opportunist. It just doesn’t make sense.
As for In-trade, the volume of traders is quite low. It could be easily influenced by a small army of Mitt supporters, since it seems like only Mitt’s supporters are really die hard about the pick. Everyone else will just shrug their shoulders, accept the choice and move on.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Adam,
For the record, Reagan wasn’t holding public office in 80′. He left the Governor’s mansion in 74′. Which is, coincidentally the same gap Mitt would be attempting to leapfrog.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:31 am
You’re right. I forgot that Reagan wasn’t still governor. But Romney’s support now is nothing like Reagan’s was after he very narrowly lost the nomination in 1976.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:32 am
Adam, I don’t think the things that were said are on issues that would hurt McCain. They would show that he was more like the Dems on immigration. They would show he was against the Bush tax cuts, as the Dems are. Even though neither of them really supported a timelined withdrawel, even if they tried to use that it only shows that one of them supposedly thought like they did. Neither was ever attempting to say the other wasn’t qualified to be President. That’s what we are trotting out before the public about them. Which issues would be effective for the Dems. I just don’t see any.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:33 am
I think we should poll Russia, North Korea, and Iran, if we have to base our decision on what the Dems will do the there will be one thing that won’t be on our list that they’ll use.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:43 am
Is anyone else having problems with this site not posting comments?
August 28th, 2008 at 6:44 am
A few things have made me think it’s not going to be Romney. The ads are one thing. The narrative of “country first” is another. The unfortunate “seven houses” comment is a third. Barry’s selection of Joe Biden in order to make a play for blue-collar white men is the fourth. Number five is that Karl Rove appears to be trying to strong-arm McCain to do what he wants. Rove and the Bushies tried to do everything they could to deny McCain the nomination. Why would McCain want to pick Rove’s chosen candidate? Number six is that McCain is doing reasonably well in the West. He leads the RCP average of NV and he is only -0.4 in Colorado. Why would McCain want to pick Mitt and risk losing VA and OH now that the western states have broken his way in the past few weeks.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:45 am
Adam - Others were last night. I think I lost one last night.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:51 am
Adam, Mitt out polled everyone in the last Virginia VEEPS poll, including Huckabee. He showed a very positive ‘ore likely’ to vote for McCain amongst evangelicals, and beat all others badly amongst Protestants and Catholics in Virginia. The same thing that will help him in Michigan will help in Ohio, except not a familial tie to Ohio, but I certainly don’t think he hurts at all.
Colorado may show almost even now, but in a few days it will be pretty bad in favor of Obama. the 75,000 watching tonight will all be given personal info, and the GOTV for Dems will be high. We must be able to offset that. several states that Mitt helps in are too close to assume we have them won.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:59 am
It doesn’t make any sense that Mitt would do well in VA. I wouldn’t hange my hat on one veepstakes poll any more than I believe that Pawlenty will help in MN 13 points. History shows that Romney fared poorly in the south. A case might be made that Romney won’t hurt the ticket much in VA but he isn’t going to help when push comes to shove. He’s most valuable in the west, but now that McCain’s campaign has taken the Dem against Dem approach, Biden is going to make a play for the blue-collar white men that Obama can’t reach I don’t see how Romney is a worthwhile pick anymore.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:06 am
My posts are getting eaten too!
August 28th, 2008 at 7:14 am
I am still hoping my Mr. Pawlenty, but I am preparing myself for Mr. Romney. There are few other viable choices left.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:16 am
The press was already swarming Biden’s house by this time last week. I find it curious that although it’s being reported that
it’s essentially down to KBH and Pawlenty, they’re not even being asked about it.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:19 am
Taylor,
” I find it curious that although it’s being reported that
it’s essentially down to KBH and Pawlenty, they’re not even being asked about it.”
That’s because they are not being Chosen by The One.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:24 am
Adam,
Just a brief correction
Romney got 30 % of the vote in Georgia. Mccain got 31 % and Huckabee got 33 %. If Romney faired poorly , how did Mccain and Huckabee fair in Georgia?
Romney destroyed both Huckabee and McCain in Metro Atlanta.
Mccain barely edged Romney in Florida with Huckabee a distant third. Without Dade and Broward counties, Romney probably wins Florida. How is this fairing poorly in the south, that everyone knows.?
August 28th, 2008 at 7:27 am
Craig,
And the only reason he did even that well is because of Northern transplants. Set Georgia aside. how did he do in TN, MO, OK, SC?
August 28th, 2008 at 7:27 am
Adam - Thirty-four percent (34%) of Minnesota voters say they are less likely to vote for the GOP candidate if Pawlenty is the vice presidential nominee, while 28% say it makes them more likely to vote for McCain.
The poll you cite with the 13% was erroneously reported. The table explicitly showed only a 1% help.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:28 am
My first paragraph was rasmussen August 14th.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:29 am
I forgot Alabama. He got crushed there too. Citing only GA is a flimsy argument. And the difference between VA and GA is that the urban professionals in NoVA are Democrats. Romney will fare in Appalcahian VA about as well as he did everywhere else in the “old south”.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:30 am
IL Guy,
I still contend those veepstakes polls are based largely on name recognition. How else can you explain Bloomberg helping the ticket in Ohio?
August 28th, 2008 at 7:34 am
I’d say they know Charlie Crist pretty well in Florida, and know Pawlenty pretty well in Mn.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:35 am
He nearly tied in MO Adam
August 28th, 2008 at 7:36 am
He would have won W. Virginia except for the cheating.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:40 am
WV was a caucus state.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:40 am
Pawlenty just said on MSNBC that McCain will pick a pro-life candidate.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:41 am
Sigh. I can’t wait until this whole thing is over. I can’t stand the constant shilling for one candidate or another. Hopefully the folks who can’t handle McCain’s pick leave, and we don’t have to deal with “he should have picked X” all the way to November.

I don’t think that needs amplification. We all know what happened. In a game of backetball, if a guy from the other team steps aside to help the opponent score, we would think of that as cheating.

This is Democracy, not basketball, if you cannot get 50% plus one, perhaps you do not deserve to win. You had players on your Basketball team, turn around is fair play.

This line pretty much sums up all the weaknesses in the arguments of the die-hard Rombots: If we don’t win, we woz robbed!

“if you cannot get 50% plus one, perhaps you do not deserve to win”
Does anyone recall how long it took McCain to reach this threshold in the primaries? Honestly, I don’t remember. He cobbled together his win due to the number of candidates. Must have been one of the contests in March?

If you ran ten players in against 5 in basketball, I think we would call that cheating. In politics, its just business as usual, but still pretty rotten stuff.

That is true Jeff, but those are not the rule agreed upon in West Virginia. Those West Virginians were VOTRES, not basketball players. I guess perhaps it is not fair if voters perfer one candidate over another, but that is democracy.

>> He cobbled together his win due to the number of candidates
And what does that say about his popularity? All of the other candidates and their banded together by choosing the “ehh” candidate McCain simply to deny Mitt.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve come around to viewing Romney as acceptable. But some of you die-hards make it awfully tough.

Hope McCain does pick a pro-life Vice President.

Adam, it was their only way to beat him, not that they didn’t like him.
If you think about Pawlenty’s statement, it tells us more than you may first think.
1)He either knows, and know it is a pro-life candidate
2)He is lieing, or
3)He hasn’t been told yet, and is giving his personal opinion.
I would lean to it being the first.

it sounds from sampo and knepper’s tones of voices that they are feeling like its going to be romney.
I saw t-paw this morning on morning joe, wow that guy is bland. he looked so awkward in an informal context. it didn’t even seem like he could relate with anybody. he is really boring. i don’t haven’t seen him much but watchign him this morning made me think that there is no way he is the pick??
i am tired of this. he needs to pick already.

I think its pretty sickening when a front page poster on this site indicates that he will not vote for McCain if he puts a full coalition candidate of Romney or Pawlenty. That affirms what many have known all alone. Alex is a RINO.

full coalition=three legged stool
I know, Pawlenty may not quite qualify, but the’s pro-life and pro-traditional marriage, and thats too much for Alex.

Um, Mitt played the caucus in WV with the largest expenditure of any rival campaign. All the others joined their non-Mitt votes in a coalition and handed him a defeat. You can only claim this to be unfair if you invent arbitrary rules.

It doesn’t matter. Its ancient history now.
The good news is that Romney will be the VP. If I were a betting man, I would take him against the field right now even money. I’d almost do it even though I’m not a gambler, because in my mind, its almost a sure thing.
