DRUDGE: Veep Leak to Come at 6pm EST - Confirmation by 8pm

Confirmation of the pick to come at 8pm EST.

As they say, developing…

Hat-tip: Illinoisguy

[UPDATE]: AP’s Liz Sidoti says to expect Lieberman:

“Inside GOP circles Thursday, speculation swirled around Lieberman. It was fueled by reports that McCain’s advisers had asked for additional detailed information from him, by McCain’s close friendship with the 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee, and by word that Republican operatives had been told to prepare for the possibility of an ‘unconventional’ choice.”

  1. KnightHawk Says:

    This is dumb McCain.

  2. KnightHawk Says:

My only guess is the hurricane is pushing up this timeline.

  3. JerryO Says:

McCain denying he has made the VP pick.

  4. Victoria St. Gelais Says:

I really hope this is yet another time that Drudge got it wrong. It would be really tacky to pull this, not to mention extremely stupid. There’s no way McCain can upstage Obamessiah’s speech no matter who he chooses.

  5. Gary Matthew Miller Says:

Dear God. If you think the conservative revolt at the Harriet Miers SCOTUS selection was bad…

  6. TreeMan43 Says:

Talk about giving an election away. This is what we get when
democrats, cross-overs and independents decide the Republican Primary for us.

  7. WiseGuy Says:

    NO LIEBERMAN

  8. Victoria St. Gelais Says:

If he really does pick Lieberman, they might as well just cancel the dang convention. There’s no way he can win.

  9. Joe M Says:

MCCAIN PEOPLE LISTEN UP: LEIBERMAN WOULD BE A DISASTER. DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  10. ilfigo Says:

Could be a nice ploy…have everyone anticipating the leak and have that be some of the talk prior to speech. Then leak during!

  11. Jeff Says:

Can the delegates in Minneapolis pull some obscure GOP rules and get the nominee’s VP pick overturned if McCain is so brazen to pick Lieberman.

Talk about recreate ‘68 GOP style…

  12. KnightHawk Says:

By ‘unconventional’ lets hope that doesn’t mean disastrous, I still think this is all a setup for pick the base can handle.

  13. corep Says:

Is Mccain really that stupid to push a DEM on us? that pick would make the CLinton/Obama feud look like a lovefest compared to what would happen in St. Paul.

someone assure me McCain is not this dumb, please!!!!

  14. Brian H. Says:

Why else would Lieberman be a disaster besides his pro-choice political view?

  15. Brian H. Says:

    and Dem history?

  16. Raj Says:

This has to be a smoke-screen to make Romney or pawlenty look better. No way he is stupid enough to take Lieberman. McCain is not the brightest guy around, but his advisors are smart people. They wouldn’t allow this.

  17. Lucy Says:

If it is Lieberman, blame Rove.

  18. Paul8148 Says:

Maybe that what is going to happened with the huricane anywho.

  19. Gary Matthew Miller Says:

Much like the Reagan campaign’s 11th hour inclination to put Gerald Ford on the ticket as a “co-president” I suspect this Lieberman nonsense will ultimately collapse under its own weight.

  20. KnightHawk Says:

“Can the delegates in Minneapolis pull some obscure GOP rules and get the nominee’s VP pick overturned if McCain is so brazen to pick Lieberman.”

Yeah they could fail to vote for the nomination and throw up any number of other candidates so long as they had the votes, I think it requires like 5 state delegations to nominate an alternative someone correct me if I’m wrong.

  21. Sandy Says:

This would be the oldest looking ticket in history! Maybe they should both leave and join up to run for the President and Vice-President of AARP.

  22. Kavon W. Nikrad Says:

    Lucy #17

You may be on to something there… The fact that Rove has publicly been advocating for Mitt to be Veep my have sealed his fate.

  23. Big S Says:

    #17

I think that’s right, to a certain extent. There are reports that Rove and other Bush associates have been pushing McCain pretty hard to pick Romney. I think if they had lined up behind someone like Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, or one of McCain’s buddies from the Senate, McCain might have been more receptive; instead, they’re promoting the one guy among the major primary competitors who McCain seems to dislike/distrust.

  24. KnightHawk Says:

“someone assure me McCain is not this dumb, please!!!!”

Haha I would but you know I thought McCain wasn’t stupid enough to champion CIR 2.0 after what happened in 2006 and I was way wrong.

I suggest we all keep our powder dry for now.

  25. Two-pox Says:

worst.. ever ticket… worse than.. dole kemp

  26. Illinoisguy Says:

O don’t buy the Sidoti story for a second.

  27. Lucy Says:

    #26 - I never buy Sidoti stories.

  28. ilfigo Says:

Raj… I think you are correct!

McCain’s camp has been pretty good these past few months re: strategy. Give them a chance.

Everyone is riled up, so I hope that SoCons will recognize that Romney (who has governed pro-life and conservatively) is a much better choice than those out there.

  29. Greg Alterton Says:

Geez, people! He hasn’t done anything yet, and you’re already preparing to jump off the ledge.

  30. corep Says:

Fox is reporting that Romney will be with Ridge and Mccain in PA on saturday. McCain confirmed this himself, but he also cautioned not to read anything into that as to who the VP is. Then he talked glowingly about Ridge.

One thing for sure that puts Romney in 2 of the 3 big stops on the route. If it ends of not being him then no one can say Romney isnt going to do all he can to support McCain!

  31. corep Says:

*sorry that should be “ends up”

  32. ilfigo Says:

    Well said corep!

  33. Brian Says:

I really don’t believe Lieberman. They saw the bounce they got off of Saddleback. Why on God’s green Earth would they pick Lieberman and jeopordize that? SecDef sure, but VP? That would be very very stupid. Lieberman is ONLY conservative on foreign policy, he’s very liberal on everything else and therefore would push a center-right presidency to the center or even a bit center-left. At least that’s what the perception would be. Pick Romney or Palin!!!

  34. John Galt Says:

like i said, its between romney and leibermann. leibermann’s chnces are 40 percent though. i still doubt it will be him.

  35. neorep04 Says:

SUPPORT MCCAIN LIEBERMAN. THIS TICKET ENSURES AN OPEN RACE IN 2012 BECAUSE MCCAIN WON’T RUN FOR TWO TERMS. THESE MEANS WE CAN ALL GO BACK TO TOUTING ROMNEY, HUCKABEE, OR WHOEVER ELSE YOUR HEART DESIRES.

  36. Joel Says:

my new choice for VP is anyone but Joe

  37. Gary Matthew Miller Says:

As I step back from the ledge, this is my analysis: flirting with Lieberman signals to moderates and Jewish Americans that JMac went to the brink with Joe, but ultimately thought his talents could better be used elsewhere. Meanwhile, conservatives rejoice that Joe was not the ultimate pick with will make them infinitely more grateful it is Pawlenty or Romney — even though both have conservative shortcomings.

  38. Illinoisguy Says:

#35 WHAT? McCain has 0 chance of winning with Lieberman. Two terms???

  39. Illinoisguy Says:

#37, I totally agree. He’s not fooling me… This would be suicidal.

  40. staffer Says:

It’s going to be Kwame Kilpatrick. Put it on the board.

  41. Illinoisguy Says:

Lieberman is tanking on intrade.com. He’s down 4.9 on the day and now at 3.0.

  42. ilfigo Says:

Fox News just announced that Bill O’Reilly has been vetted and may be a likely choice. A McCain aide touted his number 1 show and his reputation for being fair and balanced.

  43. nate Says:

it’s a HEADFAKE to the left so he can drive to the right with the ball

  44. Falz Says:

The vp shouldn’t be leak until after Ganymede give his speach in the white temple.

  45. KnightHawk Says:

#40/42 - lol! thanks for the chuckle.

  46. Gery- Says:

Why automatically assume an unconventional pick means Lieberman? Still hoping for a darkhorse/suprise pick. As Kavon wrote on Tuesday, why release the name on BO’s big day if it is not a shocker. No offense to Mitt or TPaw but they will be a ho-hum pick and the dems are ready to go after them.
    -

  47. Kavon W. Nikrad Says:

Intrade knows as much as we do on this choice.

    It’s worthless…

  48. ilfigo Says:

    Knight…it is not a joke!

  49. Jason Says:

LEts NYT says Romney and Pawlenty. York says Pawlenty, no leiberman or ROmney, US news says Hutchison, and Now this saying Leiberman. I don’t buy any of this.

  50. Jason Says:

Lets see…NYT says Romney and Pawlenty. York/NRO says Pawlenty- no leiberman or Romney. US news says Hutchison, and now this saying Leiberman. I don’t buy any of this.

  51. KnightHawk Says:

LOL - double chuckle cause you me to fall for clicking the link! Thanks again champ.

  52. DaveG Says:

Expect someone no one is thinking of. Or at least someone that no one has taken seriously as a veep selection, like Colin Powell or Rudy.

  53. KnightHawk Says:

It’s Chelsie bank on it. ;)

  54. ilfigo Says:

No problem…day is a bit hectic and I don’t want to start working!

  55. Illinoisguy Says:

    #42 lol

  56. ilfigo Says:

Or…could be McCain’s mom: She has seen a lot in her time.

Or…Michelle Obama, I think that is a wild card and she has a better chance of becoming Pres.

Or…Sarkozy, outdo the Dems by going with Europe.

Or…Michael Phelps, more accomplishments in 2 weeks that Obama in his entire life.

Or…Huck, he has attempted to split the party since Feb.

    Or…Al Gore.

    Or…

  57. Gery- Says:

    #42 Thanks for the laugh!!

  58. TarheelRepublican Says:

McCain says he hasn’t picked yet? That’s a lie…I guess even the “Maverick” politicians still play the game.

  59. TarheelRepublican Says:

McCain says he hasn’t picked yet? That’s a lie…I guess even the “Maverick” politicians still play the game.

  60. Big S Says:

Expect someone no one is thinking of. Or at least someone that no one has taken seriously as a veep selection, like Colin Powell or Rudy.

I think it’s either Pawlenty (the ultimate “don’t alter the race” pick) or someone from the “field” as the online political futures traders would put it.

  61. mary Says:

We will find out tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 29) who will be McCain’s VP.

  62. ilfigo Says:

Illinois check ou thte link above to see the story.

  63. Illinoisguy Says:

It seems to me that a major player like Pawlenty would have known, one way or another buy this morning, and he said it would be a pro-life candidate. Wouldn’t McCain have told him it was, or was not him by 8 this morning? Or not?

  64. OHIO JOE Says:

    Test

  65. AmericanIdeals Says:

Gotta be a smokescreen. No way McCain’s that dumb.

  66. Adam Says:

I am just overjoyed that all of this Veep speculation will be over within a day or so. Let’s find out who McCain’s selects, deal with it, whether enthusiastic or not, and hope for the best.

  67. bethtopaz Says:

Two old guys - and Lieberman has the worst, whiney voice ever. He’s a dem, for Pete’s Sake!!
    Please, don’t do it, McCain!!!

  68. Alex Knepper Says:

This Lieberman stuff is totally a bait-and-switch.

    It’s Rudy!

  69. dotan Says:

    It’s Rudy!

I would give my eye teeth for it to be Rudy. Too good to be true, alas.

  70. Seth Says:

Wow, am I the only person that thinks Lieberman would be a good choice? I feel so alone.

  71. David D Says:

If all of this is a head fake, I think McCain is only losing credibility.

  72. RealConservative Says:

At this point, I only ask…

    ANYONE BUT ROMNEY!

  73. J. Martin Says:

    NO ONE BUT ROMNEY!

  74. voter Says:

#32 - for many of us — off this board, of course — Lieberman and Romney are no different — except Lieberman sticks to his principals. Between the two, I could live with Lieberman

  75. johnnyG Says:

74 - Yeah. I remember when Romney was a liberal democrat, before changing to liberal independent.
