Last Minute Decisions

All of the rumors swirling around Tim Pawlenty and Mitt Romney seem strikingly similar to those surrounding Evan Bayh and Tim Kaine prior to Obama’s announcement of Joe Biden.

Pawlenty clearing his schedule a day ahead of McCain’s pick? Only a week ago Kaine hosted Obama for an overnight stay in Virginia. Speculation hit a fever pitch. Nothing happened.

How about the reported sweeps of Romney’s sister’s house by the Secret Service? Sounds serious. That’s what many thought when word came that Obama-Bayh signs and stickers were under production. Nothing happened.

Hey, I could be completely wrong. Pawlenty may have just received the call from McCain and he is now huddling with the campaign to plan out his first appearance.

My gut, however, believes that McCain will want to counter Biden’s power and stature. He will want a certified leader and plausible Commander-in-Chief. Someone the American people will instantly trust….

His choices come down to Rudy and Powell…Yes, a boy can dream.

pawlenty is as bad for us and kaine would have been for them

obama and a super majority because the old man picked quayle 2

  2. Dan Says:

I hope you’re right! I’d be thrilled with either Rudy or General Powell. They would be game-changers, or at the very least, major headline-grabbers. Not to mention both would be phenomenal VPs. But best of all, we won’t have to hear from the Rombots until 2011, lol.

  3. Illinoisguy Says:

    No thank you…I’ll pass.

  4. Illinoisguy Says:

Mitt just totally tanked on intrade…..10 :( a very sad day indeed.

  5. Sam Says:

    Dan:

Don’t worry… the Rombots will be blasting off to their home planets now that their conquest of earth has been foiled.

    Matt:

Can you point to why Pawlenty is supposedly so bad? I like him.

  6. matt Says:

mccain picking tpaw shows he doesnt believe he has any shot to win, and he is just helping a loyal friend and we have barry hussein and a supermajority

  7. ogrepete Says:

    #5 Sam

Pawlenty is not bad. He is unknown. Many people on this board have said he is boring, an accusation I can not judge, never having seen him.

  8. matt Says:

1 1/2 terms as the governor of a state that elects wresters and nominates comedians is not a serious choice.

if mccain dies in feb. 2009, can anyone picture tpaw as commander in chief. nope

the bush/quayle ads comparisons are being written as we speak

  9. Sam Says:

Ummm… if McCain though he couldn’t win, we would have thrown a long ball. Pawlenty is a good and safe running game pick.

  10. Kristofer Says:

matt, stop being a fool! You are making yourself look like a idiot.

  11. Dan Says:

matt - quite the contrary; McCain picking TPaw proves he thinks he can very well win and doesn’t need make a risky choice that would alienate one group or another. TPaw is quintessential safe choice.

  12. matt Says:

    its over if its pawlenty

  13. Ben Says:

Shouldn’t we limited Veep speculation to who has been vetted?

  14. jim Says:

no one knows who’s been vetted. no one knew Quayle or Cheney were vetted

  15. dimview Says:

The silver lining is this will leave it totally open for 2012. Quayle couldn’t get out of IA even after being VP. I see Pawlenty and Huck fighting over the same folks.

  16. Martha for M&M Says:

Someone said McCain wants to prove he can do this himself - hence Pawlenty. He probably can, a brick can beat Obama.

I was hoping that McCain really meant what he said when he vowed to choose a man who can be president if necessary. Pawlenty cannot fill that requirement and will get creamed in the debate. He has not been a good spokesman for McCain.

I thought McCain was smarter than that. The GOP delegates prefer Romney at 38% over Pawlenty at 7%. It would have been an exciting convention if Romney was VP.

The other obvious is that McCain doesn’t want to be overshadowed.

  17. KnightHawk Says:

    “Pawlenty cannot fill that requirement”

Oh Hogwash - I’ll certainly agree Pawlenty doesn’t help McCain in anyway other then as a good guy to have stay out of the way, but he’s not unqualified for the VP slot, hell he’s more qualified for the top slot then Obama, let alone veep.

  18. Opinionated Says:

Pawlenty will be a non issue the day after he is picked and will not be noticed again until the VP debate.

If he’s the pick, McCain is making a super safe choice. Either because he is confident that he can beat Obama on his own or because he is so cautious that he can’t take a chance that his VP choice could possibility be controversial.

  19. Jamison Says:

My sources very close to McCain are saying it’s not Pawlenty; it’s Ron Paul.

You heard it from me first…
