Economy rebounds at better-than-expected pace in the spring, mostly spurred by exports

WASHINGTON (AP) — The economy shifted to a higher gear in the spring, growing at its fastest pace in nearly a year as foreign buyers snapped up U.S. exports and tax rebates spurred shoppers at home.

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that gross domestic product, or GDP, increased at a 3.3 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter. The revised reading was much better than the government’s initial estimate of a 1.9 percent pace and exceeded economists’ expectations for a 2.7 percent growth rate.

The rebound comes after two dismal quarters. The economy actually shrank in the final three months of 2007 and limped into the first quarter at a feeble 0.9 percent pace. The 3.3 percent growth in the spring was the best performance since the third quarter of last year, when the economy was chugging along at a brisk 4.8 percent pace.

“Obama’s poll numbers have improved over the past couple of nights and today’s update shows a tie race because it includes a mix of both recent trends. But it seems likely that Obama will end the convention with a modest lead over McCain. Then, of course, it will be time for the Republican Vice Presidential pick and, next week, the GOP convention.”

Frankly, I’m thrilled its still tied. Go McCain!

  4. terry Says:

Aron, how much do you think the Obama Campaign’s official cable news channel will report the nation’s second quarter 3.3% GDP?

Here in Denver, there were audible cheers in the press pavilion from multiple directions when Barack Obama walked on stage. It’s outside the convention center and no regular delegates are here — only press.

    Obama Campaign Turns Thuggish

The Obama campaign has tonight again demonstrated that it will try to silence voices with which it does not agree. This should chill all Americans, for it offers a preview of the tactics to which a President Obama might harness the power of the federal government. The means chosen include harassment of television stations running the 527 group Ayers ad, a demand for a Justice Department investigation, and just last night, disruption of a radio talk show in Chicago that dared have Dr. Stanley Kurtz of National Review, who has been examining the archives of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, in which Bill Ayers and Barack Obama worked as colleagues.

The Obama campaign was given an opportunity to send a representative to discuss the Bill Ayers-Barack Obama-Chicago Annenebrg Challenge on the MIlt Rosenberg show last night, along with Stanley Kurtz. They refused to send anyone to debate the issue.

Instead the Obama campaign initiated an attack the likes of which veteran broadcaster (and University of Chicago professor) Milt Rosenberg has not seen in his 30 years on the air. Constant emails and phone calls — jamming the lines at a minimum and perhaps trying to chill free speech. Would Barack Obamam the “consitutional law professor” (lecturer, actually) approve of this message — that free speech should be harassed into silence?

I thought the left believed that dissent was the highest form of patriotism. I guess that does not hold true if you dissent from the cult of Obama. We live in scary times.

  10. Matthew E. Miller Says:

Have we yet had a ONE quarter of negative growth, let alone the 2 straight that a recession requires? And yet, from hearing the Dems, you’d think the US had become a third world country.

  11. Rick (the first) Says:

Romney above 70, buy bids running 8/1 over sell offers. It’s a running of the bulls.

Just a little fun for all the nervous nelly’s

  12. Richard M Says:

Very slight movement. Sen Clinton’s speech on Tuesday apparently didn’t really do it for the Dems. Tomorrow’s result should be interesting, as it will encompass the roll call vote and Pres Clinton’s speech.

  13. mike Says:

    10. - we had a -.2 % GDP growth in the last quarter of 07 I believe but
no recession can be declared it appears without having 2 over a year at
    least.

  14. TreeMan43 Says:

Rasmussen said this morning on FOX that tomorrow’s poll will show
    a signficant bounce for Obama.

  15. EricB Says:

Obama will probably lead by 4 or 5 tomorrow in Rasmussen.

McCain says he has not yet decided on running mate as contenders playing waiting game

DENVER - John McCain said Thursday he had yet to decide on a running mate.

The Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting was expected to name his vice presidential pick later this week. The hope is to curb any uptick in polling that Democratic nominee Barack Obama could get from his convention wrapping up Thursday in Denver and to create momentum heading into the Republican convention next week in St. Paul, Minn.

McCain and his running mate then are expected to appear together at one or more rallies, including one planned for Saturday in Pennsylvania.

McCain said in an early morning radio interview that he was bringing both former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, two of the leading names on his short list. But he cautioned against assuming that meant either one would be the pick.

“I haven’t decided yet so I can’t tell you,” he told KDKA NewsRadio in Pittsburgh early Thursday.

However, McCain talked glowingly of Ridge, a longtime friend who has been a frequent presence at his side during the campaign.

“He’s a great American and a great and dear friend and I rely on him and I have for many years,” McCain said.

McCain, who spoke with the radio station from his home in Sedona, Ariz., told people that he would make no final decision until after he talks with his wife, Cindy. She has been in the country of Georgia this week and had been expected to return late Wednesday.
