Why it Won’t Be Lieberman

The major thing standing in the way of a Lieberman Vice-Presidential pick for McCain is a seemingly small thing – an RNC rule that states that a Vice Presidential nominee must have been a Republican for at least 60 days prior to nomination.

There are only two ways around that rule as far as I know – the first being that Lieberman has already switched his party affiliation a couple months ago secretly without letting anybody know (highly, highly, highly unlikely). The other option would be for the delegates to vote to waive that rule at the RNC — and it’s not hard to imagine how that would go.

Color me skeptical, but I just don’t think John McCain would put the party through that kind of turmoil just to get a liberal Democratic candidate who already failed twice in running for the White House on a Republican ticket.

It wont be Lieberman. 50/50 Romney or Pawlenty but all this misdirection
leads me to think it may be Romney after all.

  2. Gary Matthew Miller Says:

Nice catch on the party rules, Matt.

  3. RayinRI Says:

    I think it’s more like 60/40 Romney over T-Paw

  4. RayinRI Says:

By the way, great catch Matt!

    # 1 & 2… I surely do hope you are right. I would definitely be for the good of the country since Zogby reported the other day that any other ticket seems to lose. I don’t really want that.

    # 1 & 3… I surely do hope you are right. I would definitely be for the good of the country since Zogby reported the other day that any other ticket seems to lose. I don’t really want that.

  7. David A B Says:

Isn’t it obvious that “the most exciting ad ever” that’ll run after Obama’s speech will announce the choice – that’s what makes it so “exciting?”

  8. Alex Knepper Says:

This Lieberman stuff is to make the base relieved about Rudy! :)

  9. Joel Says:

the dark horse is Paris Hilton

  10. matt Says:

pawlenty would be the biggest let down in history, romney would be holding serve, and KBH would shock the world

  11. Paul8148 Says:

they can vote to can the rules.

Romeny people are saying he is out.

  12. ilfigo Says:

Who is saying Mitt is out?

  13. Bullmoose Says:

I have a funny feeling its Meg Whitman. Still hoping for KBH.

  14. JerryO Says:

the question is … how soon will the Secret Service has arrived at ‘insert name” be reported to let everybody know who the pick is?

  15. marK Says:

If it is Lieberman, I will seriously consider voting for Obama — but not out of frustration or bitterness, nor any particular dislike of Lieberman. I have great respect for the guy, liberal though he maybe.

It has been made excruciatingly clear to McCain that Lieberman would not be welcomed by the majority of the party. If McCain decides to go with Lieberman anyway, it would prove that he is an arrogant hardhead.

Given the choice between an arrogant lightweight and an arrogant hardhead for the most powerful job in the world, I will go with the arrogant lightweight every time. The lighthead can be quickly marginalized and any damage contained. It is much harder to contain damage caused by an arrogant hardhead.

  16. AZVet Says:

I really think its 60/40 Paw over Mitt…. Even though I’ve wanted Mitt from day one.
I’ll admit that Paw is a safer pick in many respects, but Mitt has the edge on ability.

  17. bethtopaz Says:

With all of McCain’s ads emphasizing BO’s lack of experience, do you really think he would put someone there who had a small amount of experience? I don’t think so.

  18. RayinNH Says:

The “Shocking” ad after the Obama speech will be JMac speaking face to face, so to speak, in an ad directed straight at Obama. The shock will be what he says to the man.

  19. Richard M Says:

“With all of McCain’s ads emphasizing BO’s lack of experience, do you really think he would put someone there who had a small amount of experience? I don’t think so.”

Bethtopaz, I think Sen McCain may be considering more than just gov’t experience. That being the case, an intelligent CEO with international business relations (and who’s also female) isn’t out of the picture…

  20. John Galt Says:

I don’t think its t-paw. It is really looking like mitt with a possibility of kbh.

leibermann seems to be out. because if it reuqired waiving rules the mccain campaign would haev had to for sure had enough assurances from enough people to know he had the votes to make that happen. He woudl never do it without that assurance and to get that assurance, there is no way the media would know about it.

so, thanks to matt’s post, i think leibermann is out. t hat leaves kbh and romney in my opinion with the ods leaning heavily towards romney. i really think romney and mccain can win.

i would put my money on romney about now.

  21. ilfigo Says:

The ad will be a direct request to be a man and do townhalls. Now that you are the candidate, lets face America together and talk about the issues that are affecting the people. I challenge you!

  22. Seth Says:

Meg Whitman would be perfectly capable of being President as far as I’m concerned, so a VP pick wouldn’t be at all bad. I really hope it is Whitman, but I doubt it.

  23. Raj Says:

Pawlenty people don’t think it is him any longer, though he coould be given a huge role in the next administration.

  24. Tom in SoCal Says:

Don’t count Fiorina out! I saw her a couple of weeks ago on Fox and she was pretty good.

  25. TarheelRepublican Says:

Raj-are you making a generalization based on your observation of Pawlenty supporters on this forum? If not you’d better put a source next to that kind of comment.

  26. corep Says:

Whitman takes the “not ready to lead” mantra off the table. That is too huge and effective a counterpoint to Obama for it to be whitman.

  27. Greg Says:

The Pawlenty speculation is really dwindling. Maybe it’s a ploy by McCain. From what I have heard, McCain’s organization is really trying to play up the suspense and is really trying to make thios selection as surprising as possible.

  28. ilfigo Says:

An inside source says that McCain’s surprise will not be WHO is but WHO are….

  29. corep Says:

    ilfigo-
    huh?
