If I May Take a Moment to Gloat…

…someone called for this path months ago.

So what’s a winning strategy? Well, it’s not to beef up the ticket with the Most Beloved By the Base superlative winners…What John McCain needs is a message of reform and competence, tied to issues of energy, national security, health care, and the economy, bolstered by a co-headliner with a record that shows that the team is serious about changing its path, in order to attract…Hillary supporters…Count me on the list of those that would be more than satisfied with a Palin vice-presidential nomination

This is high-risk, high-reward, yes. But this is the path that he needs to take: advocating reform, not just change. The possible brilliance of this pick, too, is that the Obama camp may be baited into attacking her for her inexperience. Think about that: The Obama camp? Attacking Palin for inexperience? Hah! Clever as hell, if you ask me.

Also, the response to Palin so far has been positive — plus (yes, this is anecdotal evidence, but bear with me), the Hillary supporters I know are all tempted to vote for McCain-Palin. We’ll see…

  1. B Werty Says:

Alex, millions of conservatives were calling for Palin. She was the favorite on sites like Free Republic all along. And if you had to give a superlative award out for “Most Beloved By the Base”, the winner would be…………….Sarah Palin. So I don’t know what you’re talking about. The reform aspect and the female element are important, but don’t think for one second that shoring up the base of the party wasn’t a large part of this pick. The base is now fired up, whether fringe “Republicans” like it or not.

  2. Alex Knepper Says:

Yes, yes, but the message of reform, which he is running with, too.

  3. BarkTwiggs Says:

Obama can keep his pocket change. I want improvement!

  4. Matthew E. Miller Says:

Gosh, as a so-called “youth” I’m really excited. She’s going to add alot of energy to the ticket. Maybe I’ll be able to walk into a room of 20 somethings without being barraged by continual Obama fawning.

  5. dotan Says:

Yes, yes, but the message of reform, which he is running with, too.

I hope they drive this theme home during their convention. And I want to see more of Palin’s family, her ultra-cute kids, and especially her steel-worker joe-sixpack husband. I hope he gets to introduce her. I didn’t think our system was still capable of producing politicians like Palin.

  6. Tex Says:

I remember that post. It got me to do some research on Palin and led me to the same position. I too am more than satisfied with the pick.

  7. Jared Says:

Props Alex for calling it when you did. Great choice for McCain.

  8. SJ Reidhead Says:

Put me in the gloating column!

    SJR
    The Pink Flamingo

  9. BWett Says:

The issue isn’t that Obama can’t attack Palin, it’s that now McCain can’t attack Obama for inexperience. What an unmitigated disaster.

  10. Tom in SoCal Says:

BWett you are wrong. McCain never attacked O’s experience, he attacked his judgement. There is a difference.

  11. sampo Says:

I cant tell you guys how excited i was to learn this news!!! i love it…

    where does this leave ANWR?

  12. BWett Says:

10 - I don’t think that’s entirely true, but at any rate, he should have been nailing Obama and that point, and now he can’t.

  13. Joseph D. Walch Says:

As I’ve said for the 571st time Alex, Rudy isn’t going to be VP.

  14. Joseph D. Walch Says:

    While we’re gloating, that is.

  15. Richard M Says:

BWett, we weren’t going to win the race by beating Sen Obama over the head with being a junior senator, anyway. The doubt has already been placed in people’s minds concerning his inexperience, and now he is incapable of attacking Gov Palin’s short tenure as Gov without looking like a total hypocrite (not that he won’t try, he’ll just look bad doing it).

For all of you out there who are fearful that Gov Palin kills the ticket, here’s an idea. Why don’t you relax, have a great Labor Day weekend, and take a look at the polls on Tuesday. If the ticket tanks going into the Rep Convention, you’ll have a basis for your fears, but when they don’t, we can all tell you to drop the Chicken Little hysteria and get on board. I used to think this was going to be around 300 EV for Sen McCain on election night, but this pick, I believe, puts him with an upside potential we haven’t seen in a long time, such as 350-400 EV (with an accompanying risk of a loss, but from what I have heard of Gov Palin, I don’t see it happening).

  16. Tom in SoCal Says:

    BWett,

So what? That argument was starting to get old anyways. Where McCain should be hitting him is on meat and potato issues. Like taxes and spending.

  17. Glo Says:

This the first time that I saw Gov. Palin and heard her speak. She is genuine, and my
first thought is that perhaps a Margaret Thatcher or a Chancellor Merkel is finally e
emerging from the women politicians of this country. She has the toughness that surely
will excite the Republican party, and get them out of the doldrums and malaise. Also it
will squash some of the Obama high that the MSM is taunting.

  18. rnst_p Says:

Gloating about the worst VP pick in history?

  19. David Says:

Alex, you really are a humble person! Heres a pat on your back…

What else should we do to feed your fat head?
