BREAKING: Palin Smears and Cover-up

I have been on the phone all day.  Mr. Frum, your assumptions are correct.

Nicolle Wallace – Behind the Smears

It has now been made public that Nicolle Wallace is one of the sources behind the Palin smears.  Wallace, a former Bush aid has been receiving protection and direction throughout this smear campaign from Rick Davis, John McCain 2008 Campaign Manager.  On November 4th, Nicolle Wallace contacted Fox News and Newsweek and falsely accused Governor Palin of purchasing additional wardrobe accessories, even after the $150,000 shopping spree revelation was made public.  Ms. Wallace has also been quoted on the record as saying, ”this campaign may do me in,”.  No wonder.

It has also been confirmed that the Palin smear campaign began before November 4th.  At least two weeks prior to election day, Wallace and close friend Rick Davis, decided that John McCain would not become elected President of the United States.  Fearful that the poorly managed campaign would prohibit them from obtaining any future high paying lobbyist or political positions (Davis resigned from his firm earlier this year at the request of Senator McCain), Wallace and Davis created an elaborate scheme to direct blame for the failed campaign towards Governor Palin, hoping to take attention away from their strategic errors.  Davis and Wallace were behind the decisions to hide Palin from the press, Palin’s make-over, the ”you can see Russia from Alaska” foreign policy argument and the over coaching Palin received prior to interviews.  The clothing purchases and coaching Palin received from Wallace and other campaign staff had all been approved by Mr. Davis.

Wallace and Davis are currently unemployed, although it has been reported that Davis has been receiving payments from Fannie and Freddie, acting as his single source of income.  Earlier this year John McCain demanded that Davis resign from his position as one of DC’s top lobbyists.  Many political observers believe that Davis permanently damaged his political career through his inability to successfully run a national campaign, which then forced Senator McCain to re-assign most of Mr. Davis’s duties as Campaign Manager to Steve Schmidt.  Davis was left with one single responsibility, support and direct the Vice Presidential nominee.

I late October, the Palin smear campaign was discovered by senior foreign policy adviser to John McCain, Randy Scheunemann.  Clearly troubled by this scheme and the unwillingness by Rick Davis to defend Governor Palin from the false attacks and rumors that had been circulating about her conduct during the campaign, Scheunemann decided to leak information on the Palin smear campaign to Bill Kristol.  Kristol accurately reported that it was in fact Nicolle Wallace (authorized by Rick Davis) who had purchased the $150,000 of clothing for Governor Palin.

Less interested in focusing on the campaign and defending Governor Palin, Davis and Wallace pulled staffers from their campaign duties and began a Gestapo-like operation to discover who had been leaking the Palin smear campaign to the media.  After searching through the email and phone records of most of the senior and HQ campaign staff, Davis discovered that Scheunemann was behind the leaks.  Scheunemann was immediately fired by Davis.

It was not until the final days of the campaign that Governor Palin discovered the scheme to direct blame for the loss of the campaign at her direction.  Up until that point, Governor Palin had continued to place her trust with Wallace and Davis, as per the direction she had received from Senator McCain and Steve Schmidt.

Palin and McCain remain on good terms and in fact spoke on the phone today.

Update:

On October 29th, I wrote an article regarding a Palin smear campaign.  All of the content I posted included word-for-word quotes, directly from Romney supporters and the American Spectator.

It appears as if the American Spectator was incorrect to point the finger at the Romney camp, although the details of the smear campaign were accurate.  On October 30th, Jason Bonham provided me with information that countered the claims of the American Spectator.  At this point I began an investigation, which resulted in this post.

  1. Greg Says:

Wait! Everyone on here said that Romney was behind the anti-Palin whispers. Something doesn’t add up…

  2. Brian Says:

And Davis hated Romney! All those who attempted to attribute the smear to Romney owe an apology.

  3. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

#1, #2, Those documented smears, were by Romney friends.

  4. ogrepete Says:

Not sure how true this is. Have Rick and Nicolle “fessed up?”

  5. WiseGuy Says:

May they live in infamy for helping to put a socialist in the White House!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Bags Says:

As I said before, the McCain campaign staffers were not nice people and not beyond false allegations and misdirections. McCain himself is a very tempermental guy who was known to attack others — usually fellow republicans! How in the world did we ever end up with this guy.

  7. DSkinner Says:

    Kris,

You were proven wrong and embarrassed by your anti-Romney thread last week. Don’t keep up with the same tired lies and smears about Romney when it is now plainly obvious that McCain’s people were behind this.

These McCain loyalists hate Romney so don’t try to act like they were somehow helping Romney from inside the campaign.

This was a case of CYA, nothing more, nothing less.

  8. Justin Martin Says:

If this is true, I think their careers in the party are over. This is unacceptable behavior.

  9. JerryO Says:

#6 / we ended up with this guy because the Ind. & Dem. in the early primaries picked this guy; with all the desire for a change in the Rep. Congressional leadership, what is going to be done about these early primaries so that Rep. pick the Rep. primary winner?

  10. The 'Other' One Says:

6- I don’t think that McCain chose his staff because he knew they would help him smear others. He chose them because he thought that they would help him on the path to victory. McCain had no part in this scheme.

  11. Big S Says:

I hope the GOP doesn’t decide to go down with the sinking ship that is Sarah Palin’s political career. It’s over.

  12. bay harbor butcher Says:

i wont be donating any to race42012 unless kristopher admits his earlier romney / palin post was a mistake. look, palin is getting thrown under the bus. thats what happens when people lose, everyone tries to pass the blame around. but the fact remains, mccain nominated palin for VP after having met her twice. none of this would have happened if he picked someone he was more comfortable with. the whole thing just never vibed .

  13. BarkTwiggs Says:

Operation Leper is certainly in full swing now: http://michellemalkin.com/2008/11/05/the-mccain-campaigns-classless-cowards/

  14. nowandlater Says:

#3, can’t deal with the facts? You’ve been proven wrong.

  15. Brian Says:

3: I think thats BS. While I have only recently again starting visiting this site, the only thing I recall was some people simply making the CLAIM that it was from UNNAMED Romney supporters. Hardly “documented.” LOL. Unless I can claim to that it was actually Jindal supporters and now, because you have my name, it is “documented.”

  16. DSkinner Says:

I think before you use this site as a platform to break a story like this, you had better have some sourcing on it.

From what I can tell all you do is re-hash what we already have known, but they you draw the conclusion that this is basis for proof as opposed to speculation. Unless you have new information to offer us, it isn’t good journalism to claim this is a fact.

For the record, I doubt your sources as compared to those of every other conservative journalist in the country who would love to be the ones to nail down with certainty who is behind the leaks.

  17. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

DSkinner, I posted quotes by Romney supporters and friends, that was it. Different post, different issues.

  18. The 'Other' One Says:

15- Actually it was all a plot by Sam Brownback to steal the nomination! See first he smears Palin, then he blames it on Romney, and now Jindal. It’s all part of the plan. *rols eyes*

  19. bay harbor butcher Says:

kristopher, aren’t you trying to do the same thing as all the people in this story? you were party of the draft palin movement. some people see the palin pick as a failure and a drag on the ticket. so isnt it in your interest to always show palin in a positive light, and blame everyone else?

  20. Cincinnati Kid Says:

I feel myself about to hurl right about now. If this is even partially true, Davis and Wallace need to be black listed from anything political….

  21. Brian Says:

This is sick. I definitely think this proves why both Palin AND Romney are good for the GOP. We need new people, not these Washington has-beens. Poor JMac- he really wanted to run a good campaign. Too bad he put his trust in the wrong people.

  22. Big S Says:

It looks like we’re entering the “Palin Truther” phase of the post-election process.

  23. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

    More is coming, just wait.

  24. corep Says:

    Kris
your last post on romney did include the wardrobe smear, and your whole basis for the attack on romney was that 3 people no longer directly associated with Romney said some not flattering things about Palin.
I think for credibility’s sake you ought to look to offer up an apology over the previous post.

I fear you are becoming as blinded in your affection for Palin as Alex was in his disdain for her. Ought the same fate await you?

  25. YoYo Says:

Bill Kristol doesn’t have much credibility left.

  26. Big S Says:

I fear you are becoming as blinded in your affection for Palin as Alex was in his disdain for her. Ought the same fate await you?

Thing is, Alex was more right than he was wrong.

  27. bay harbor butcher Says:

#24 – couldnt say it better myself. i come to this site because its usually objective and fair. the exception is kristofer.

  28. YoYo Says:

Does any of this refute that she refused preparation for the Couric interview, didn’t know Africa was a continent, or that she started mouthing off about Ayers before the campaign had settled on a strategy?

  29. The 'Other' One Says:

22- Let the Palin truth squad do what they want. Sometimes it gets annoying, but it’s mostly harmles. Personally I don’t see the need to explain the truth behind the smears to Republicans on a Republica blog. We already know that many of us have an unbridled passion for anything Palin. We understand that now. The truth telling needs to stop now.

  30. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

    #24, start a petition.

  31. DSkinner Says:

    Kris,

You posted a quote by Madden who doesn’t work for Romney. He has been on the news many times defending Palin and at the time rightly criticized the handling of the wardrobe.

You posted a quote from an article in an anti-Romney online magazine from an unnamed source.

You posted a quote from a lawyer who supported Romney.

Get real you couldn’t defend your attack then and you can’t today.

  32. Big S Says:

Bill Kristol doesn’t have much credibility left.

Yeah, those damned elitist New York Times columnists really took it on the chin this time around.

    /sarc

  33. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

#31, yes I re-posted an article from a well respected conservative mag. and???

  34. YoYo Says:

32, I’m referring to Kristol’s rampant support for a brazenly incurious buffoon who represents everything wrong with Republicans today. He championed her selection before she was picked, and defended it stridently after it was clear she didn’t have the chops.

I used to really respect him as a smart, insightful guy. Now I just see sycophant.

  35. The 'Other' One Says:

28- I don’t buy into any of that “Africa iis not a continent” crap. Seriously, any child with a second grade education knows that Africa is a continent. Heck lots of first graders and kindergarten kids know that too. Palin has a college degree. I’m pretty sure you need to pass second grade to get one.

  36. Sean P Says:

If you folks want to keep on arguing about this, I can’t stop you, nor would I try. Nothing good can come out of a circular firing squad, but I’m not about to get in the middle of one.

  37. Big S Says:

    #34

I know. And I’m referring to the attacks on columnists like David Brooks who have been derided around here as elitists and non-conservative because they though Palin was a bad choice for VP nominee. Both Brooks and Kristol are New York Times columnists.

  38. YoYo Says:

35, she went to SIX colleges. She wasn’t grade-A material.

Further, it doesn’t refute any charges that she lacked a basic understanding of government relationships, and obviously had no ****ing clue what the VP duties were, constitutionally.

    She was a moron.

  39. YoYo Says:

37, ahaaa, on the nose. Gotcha, totally agree.

They play guilt by association, unless one who shares the same association adheres to their talking points.

So, it’s more that any disagreement = disloyal, or fake.

  40. DSkinner Says:

Does anyone not see the irony that Palin has become our Obama?

    - She can do no wrong.
    - Attacks on her can never be legitimate, though instead of racism the motive for attacking Palin is future ambition.
    - She can do no wrong.
    - She is all about personality and nothing about platform or policy. (I concede that Palin has not yet had the chance to define her vision for the country, but that doesn’t mean she should be as popular as she is)

It is interesting that the MSM and the Dems created Palin’s popularity among the base by viciously attacking her before the convention. (Their goal was to hurt her among independents so in that sense they succeeded)

By far the largest reason Palin became so popular was because she became a symbolic figure for the base. She attacked for us at the convention so we defended her. It is the same reason Obama was so popular he became a vessel for everyone’s hopes.

  41. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

#40, does that make Romney, our Clinton? I’ll take those odds.

  42. The 'Other' One Says:

38- You don’t have to be grade A material to pass second grade. If she lacked even a basic understanding of governemnt relationships then how was she able to manage as govenor? Mayor? One must have some degree of intlligence in order to serve effectively in those offices.

I agree that the media made her look like a moron. Is she a moron? No. If she’s the moron then how come she was the only one with the guts to vigorously attack Obama?

  43. Big S Says:

Does anyone not see the irony that Palin has become our Obama?

I guess that means that I’m the Republican equivalent of a PUMA. Good grief.

  44. bay harbor butcher Says:

most people on this site could answer the interview questions better then palin did. plus, she was never really tested. she did like 4 cupcake interviews, and read scripted lines at a debate? but if you attack her, the palin army will just say “why do you hate women so much? ” same as the barry supporters that cry racism.

  45. YoYo Says:

    43, hahaha, same.

  46. Evil Conservative Says:

Why did we give women the right to vote???

And men had to vote on that!
How did we lose that one guys?!?!?!

  47. YoYo Says:

44, right!?? I asked mom, a virulent Palin defender, if I, her 24-year-old law student son, would have been so flustered or annoyed.

She was silent. She knows the answer.

  48. nowandlater Says:

KL is a kook. His evidence that Romney was leaking inside information is baseless. He only quotes Kevin Madden and Kirk Jower, but neither of them shared inside information. It was all in the public domain.

So where is the evidence of damaging inside information that was leaked by Romney aides?

    Buzzz…

There isn’t any. And KL is a tool

  49. DSkinner Says:

    #33,

The fact that they are anti-Romney immediately calls into question their credibility on a Romney story. The fact that they didn’t source the quote calls it into question even more. The fact that we now know McCain people were behind the leaks eliminates Romney from suspicion for any reasoned observer.

You need to get over yourself and learn that the way to build Palin’s future is not by attacking Romney. It is by persuading Romney supporters to come to your side.

I understand why the two polls showing Palin in 3rd place for 2012 must be very frustrating given the fact that at no time in the next two years will she be more popular or more well-known with GOP voters. Romney will enter 2012 as the favorite which means he will win. If you doubt the last line, see 1952 through 2008 as a history lesson. We nominate the frontrunner evertime and they are either the sitting/former President or VP, a former primary runner-up or the son of a previous President. Palin is none of those, sorry.

  50. Big S Says:

Bonus Question: What happens when you let Dan Quayle’s Chief of Staff pick your VP nominee?

  51. DSkinner Says:

    #41,

See #49. Romney will be the next nominee if he runs. The only thing that could prevent that is a national security crisis coinciding with a challenge from someone like Petraeus.

  52. Dan Says:

    Kristofer,

Get over your little boy crush, this is just embarrasing. Palin’s done on the national scene.

  53. Shawnie Says:

Kavon must be desperate for writers on this site. Another anti-Romney using smoke and mirrors? Good Grief. Not this, not again. This is a perfect example of why the SoCons come across as wackos, and have become a weakness for the Republican Party.

  54. OHIO JOE Says:

The fact that members of the McCain camp are now trashing Mrs. Palin actually makes Mr. Romney look good. While some members of the Romney camp were responsible for originally trashing Mrs. Palin, many in the Romney camp have actually came to Mrs. Palin’s defense. I realize that Mrs. Palin is not a perfect person, but she is one of the best Republicans we have had in some time. I am disgusted with people who trash her regardless of who’s camp they come from. I will try to keep an open mind for 2012 and vote for the best person, but ironically, Mr. Romney is looking good today. I was disgusted with many in the Romney camp for their tactics in 2008, but I must say that today I am impressed by thye way some in the Romney camp are defending Mrs. Palin.

  55. Cincinnati Kid Says:

I love Palin, I love Romney, I love Jindal, I love Petraeus. No matter who wins, I am happy… :-)

And what is even better, is that there is at least a 80% chance that our ticket will have 2 of the 4 on it!!!

  56. Nate G. Says:

I’d sign a petition to send KL the way of Alex Knepper (sp?)

I don’t mind pro-Palin posts because I like, and actually thought this post informative. I do mind his baseless attacks on Romney and not fessing up to it. I don’t even mind negative stuff about Romney as long as it is not just hearsay stated as fact. Kristofer is a net minus to this site.

Kavon – My recommendation would be to recruit some more level headed Palin blogger(s) to improve the site.

  57. corep Says:

Kris all I am saying is to temper yourself a little bit and get a little more objective.

Overzealousness even in a good cause is not a positive thing. you risk being marginalized and ignored when you could be an effective voice.

part of winning the war is understanding and knowing when to admit you were wrong in the battle.

leadership is accomplishing great tasks through many people, management is thinking you can do it on your own. Dont become a manager

  58. OHIO JOE Says:

    Shawnie:
The wackos in the party are the FiCons who are not satisfied with Mrs. Palin. She is an economic Conservative and a capitalist, but the FiCons are too bloody purest to see it. Many people forget that she ran her state fically responsiblely and kept taxes low, but the Country Club FiCons are too stupid to see it.

  59. Nate G. Says:

#55 Ah, come on Cincinatti….no love for Huckabee?

  60. Nate G. Says:

corep – You nailed it. OBJECTIVITY… that is what Kristofer lacks.

  61. Cincinnati Kid Says:

    58 – Nate… Ok, I love Huckabee too… I just don’t think he will end up on the ticket…

  62. Shawnie Says:

    Ohio Joe:

You have correctly guess that I am a Fiscal Conservative first, but other issues run a very close second and third. Namely foreign policy and Judge selection.

What I also have noticed is FiCons tend to be more balanced and consider several issues close to the heart. While I agree Palin had some of those same qualities that are important to me, it does not change the fact that she is not a National leader, nor is she adequately informed of National issues, not well-versed.

I am socially conservative myself, so I personally do not reject Palin because she was strong on those issues. I reject her because SHE is too stupid to see “it”.

  63. Nate G. Says:

bah – you don’t have to love Huckabee because I mentioned it. I think you were right in leaving him out. I’m happy with Palin, Romney, Jindal as well, but Huckabee. Nuh-uh. Thank goodness he won’t on the ticket. The prospects for 2012 are looking very good.

  64. nate Says:

Kris, last week it was Romney that did the clothes smear, this weeks it’s Wallace. Just make up your damn mind. And once you do make it up, apologize to 1 of the 2 it cant be both.

  65. OHIO JOE Says:

    Shawnie:
Again with respect, if Mrs. Palin was that bloody stupid, howcome she is such a great govenor?

    Nate:
Mr. Romney himself was not responsible for trashing her close, but people from both the Romney and McCain camp are responsible for trashing the Hockey Mom. The Romney camp looks good today because at least some members of the Romney camp have the decentcy to defend her.

  66. Joel Says:

I’ve seen Rick Davis on TV, the guy just oozes sleaziness and untrustworthiness.

  67. corep Says:

    OJ
are you basing that statement on the romney people on what you are reading here or has someone officially made a comment?

  68. Shawnie Says:

    Ohio Joe,

Because it is within her capacity. It is small potatoes by comparison, it is sparsely populated and the issues are fewer.

  69. OHIO JOE Says:

    Corep:

On the one hand, I know of no person who said “Hi, I am from the Romney camp, and I hereby trash Mrs. Palin.” However, last week, there were a number of people from the Romney Camp (not all from this site) who did trash Mrs. Palin and I was not very happy at all. However, today, my opinion of the Romney camp has improved, people that I personally know as well as radio people from the Romney camp have come to the defense of Mrs. Palin and I am grateful for this and I am happy. Look, I respect the fact that not everybody loves Mrs. Palin, but this trashing of her by any camp is terrible.

  70. OHIO JOE Says:

I realise that Alaska is not the most populated jurisdiction in North America, but many underpopulated places are not as well run as Alaska.

  71. DSkinner Says:

    Ohio,

There is nobody with any connection to Romney that comments on this site. I am 100% certain that of the 4.5 million people who voted for Romney their are thousands and perhaps hundreds of thousands who are against Palin, some of them on this very site.

That is in no way connected to Romney and does not reflect poorly on him.

  72. Shawnie Says:

    OJ

OK, so Palin, running a smaller entity within her capacity, does a better job than other small entities. How does that argument make her equal to the National stage and a much larger job?

I like Palin personally, in fact, a lot. Is she a National leader? No.

  73. Richard M Says:

Look, I question Gov Palin’s readiness to be Pres. I don’t think it’s a position she ever gave a moment’s consideration before Sen McCain started vetting her, and likely very little up until he chose her. She wasn’t defended very well by the campaign, and the relentless attacks, along with the awkwardness of being thrust into a position she hadn’t prepared for, could make just about anyone look like an idiot. If she’s interested in running for herself, she’ll need to broaden her horizons and prepare herself, starting today (get a second term as Gov, go to the Senate, or do something else noteworthy). I’d think her best plan would be another term as Gov, a term as Senator, then a run in 2016 (or 2020). 2012 is probably too soon, given the impressions (false or not) generated this election.

  74. OHIO JOE Says:

    DSkinner:

I have essentially admitted that I doubt that Mr. Romney is personally behind any trashing, by the same token Mr. McCain himself is also not trashing Mr. Palin, but I am still a little upset that both camp have memberthat are too extreme in their anti-Palinism. I am pleased that elements in the Romney camp have today come to her defense.

  75. MarkG Says:

Hey, I’ve been variously an anti-Romney ankle-biter and a Romney skeptic. But I have to say that bashing Romney over this is as unfair as the transparent, patently manufactured anti-Palin smearage.

There is no evidence to support the wisp of a hint of a suggestion that Romney has anything to do with the anti-Palin bilge being dumped on the good governor.

Mitt deserves credit for joining the campaign, obvious lost cause that it was.

  76. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

    Update Above.

  77. Aron Goldman Says:

Does the Hindustan Times know something about Jindal that we Americans do not?

    Golden chance for Indian-born Jindal

  78. corep Says:

    Kristofer
thanks for the update. pretty fair on your part. definitely not manager-like.

  79. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

#77, I an unable to share with you what Bonham shared with me, but the fact that he went through that effort and did what he did, made me look in to the AS article further.

  80. Shawnie Says:

    #75

But it’s all irrelevant anyway. I don’t dislike Palin herself, and I’m not against her because of some supposed clothing spree, or any of those other “smears” you so diligently “uncovered”. I’m against her being VP because she isn’t ready enough for the job. Whether she can become that National Leader kind of person is up to her at this point. But she isn’t one now.

  81. DSkinner Says:

    Thanks Kris.

It means a lot and I think we both agree on the main point that these smears are way out of line and the exact way to ensure that the GOP stays in the minority for a long, long time.

I think we also agree that we need to be united going forward, both to stop Obama for the next 4 years, and to defeat him in 2012.

On Palin, you are already convinced and some of us aren’t. Most of the party likes Palin but we want to see more before we pin our future hopes on her, especially when we already have candidates who we know we like who will probably run in 2012. Keep us updated on Palin’s continued conservative successes over the next two years and we will all keep our minds open and hope that she ends up being the leader you hope she is.

  82. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

#79, when Palin runs in either 2012 or 2016, it is up to her to win you over. She must prove herself.

  83. marK Says:

    Kristofer,

Your first mistake was taking something you read in the American Spectator at face value. Take what you read there with a grain or two of salt from now on, okay? It will save you a great deal of grief in the future.

  84. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

#82, Aside from polls, most posts on this site highlight articles from news outlets and other blogs. We re-post information from the HuffPost to NRO to the NYtimes.

I made NO mistake! But I did do what most bloggers and members of the MSM do not do, investigate further when additional information is provided.

  85. Sarah Palin is a Naked Airhead Shopaholic - According to Nicolle Wallace | FullosseousFlap's Dental Blog Says:

[...] Posted by: Flap in Nicolle Wallace, Sarah Palin The McCain staffer whose fingerprints and DNA have been found on the knife in Sarah Palin’s back is former CBS political analyst Nicolle [...]

  86. marK Says:

    #83,

Fine by me, Kris. It’s your choice. I suspect, however, that after getting burned a few more times for posting things from the American Spectator without doing due diligence, you will begin to take what they say with a grain of salt. That is, unless you relish looking like a fool.

  87. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

    #85,

Take a nap, because if you believe I was unfair to Mitt, wait until you see what I (and my friends) toss at him in 2 years.

  88. marK Says:

Oh, what are you going to toss at him in two years? And why would you want to?

  89. ObamaTurned9blue Says:

Everyone knew the backstabbing and finger-pointing would begin after the election, but who knew it would start before? The problem is Palin is bearing the brunt of the attacks in the media. If she is going to have any future she needs to send someone out to defend her before the smears stick.

  90. Shawnie Says:

    #86 Kristofer,

That remark is wholly unprofessional. I’m not sure a public forum writer should carry that kind of bias. It leads me to conclude that Kavon must have that kind of bias, is smarter than to reveal it publicly, but harbors writers who do exhibit it plenty…? Something doesn’t jive.
