In case you missed it, here is U.S. News and World Report’s list of the ten things you may not know about The ‘Marshall’ of Government:

1. Marshall Clement Sanford Jr., the eldest son of Marshall and Peggy Sanford, was born May 28,1960, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was given the nickname Mark so he wouldn’t be confused with his father.2. As children, Mark and his siblings—John, Bill, and Sarah—spent their summers and holidays with their parents on the family farm in Beaufort County, S.C.
3. The summer after Mark’s junior year of high school, his father, a cardiologist, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Later that summer, his father moved Mark, his mother, and siblings permanently to their South Carolina farm.
4. Sanford studied at Furman University, where he earned a B.A. in business. He went on to get an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia. After graduation, he worked at the New York office of Goldman Sachs. While in New York, he went by his birth name, Marshall. Upon returning to South Carolina, he switched back to using Mark.
5. Mark married Illinois native and Georgetown alumni Jenny Sullivan in 1989. The couple met in the Hamptons while they both were working in New York.
6. In 1994, with no previous political experience, Sanford was elected to Congress. One promise he made during his campaign was to serve only three terms. Sanford kept his promise and left Congress in 2001.
7. While in the House, he didn’t accept his allowance for housing; he slept in his office instead.
8. Sanford was elected governor of South Carolina in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. As governor, he holds “Open Door After Four” sessions at his office. These sessions allow citizens a five-minute appointment to speak with him.
9. Governor Sanford celebrated his election and re-election with barbecues. He preferred a casual celebration to the traditional inaugural ball. Both barbecues were held at the Watermelon Shed at the state farmers’ market in Columbia.
10. The governor’s hobbies include windsurfing, working on his family farm, and running.
Just how committed is Governor Sanford to protecting the taxpayers from government waste? Well, aside from refusing to turn the air conditioning on in the Governors mansion during the summer, Sanford successfully balanced the SC budget by defeating the Dixiecrats and liberal Democrats in the state house on the day of the budget vote, by doing this:

I don’t know a thing about this guy, but I loved that shtick!
Gags like that definitely pique my interest.

Kristofer,
What about social issues. I know that has become a topic to be avoided on this forum and some have suggested dumping traditional values from the platform, but do you know where Sanford’s at on those issues?
I’m sure I could find them on my own, but who wants to do the work?

Pro-life, Episcopalian.

Ah! That list should be in blockquotes to indicate that you got it all from the US News article. Don’t want you to be accused of plagiarism or anything.

#6, click on “The ‘Marshall’ of Government”. I sourced their article through the link.

Generally speaking, an extensive quote needs to be blocked, rather than just sourced or quoted, but it’s not really a big deal. Just nit-picking.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:37 am
#8 – Do you mean nitpicking?
no hyphen, but I’m just nitpicking!

The pig gag was lame, and stuff like this (below) will get Sanford a reputation as a bit of a nut. Otherwise, he’s OK.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:49 am
He seems OK, time will tell if he can put a camp together.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:49 am
#12, I know you understand very little about Republican politics, but Sanford is very well respected. That is why he was voted RGA Chairman.
He is considered a ‘living God’ in ficon circles.

Interesting.
As a Romney supporter (who has real doubts that Romney is running in 2012) who lives in the west, I must admit I know very little about MS. I was not impressed with his much played interview when he was not able to answer a quesion about McCain but will have to check him out. It was hard to see him in that interview after listening to guys like Mitt, Fred and Rudy do such great jobs surrogating for McCain. But I’ll have to give MS a look.

Just exactly how do you put a quote in blocks?
November 20th, 2008 at 11:19 am
And Mark Sanford seems a pretty standup guy, but I know even less about him than I do about Sarah Palin.

btw, if anyone is interested, you can order your 2009 Sarah Palin calendar here.

It wasn’t seen here in Kentucky.

Thanks for the calendar link Kristofer, it was not too difficult to convince my wife to vote for Mrs. Palin. However, perhaps I should not dare asking her to give me a Sarah Palin Calendar for Christmas.

Sanford is one in a million.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Windsurfing? The guy is a windsurfer???
Thats an automatic disqualifier, itsn’t it?
November 20th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Thanks, Big S.
November 20th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Better to be a windsurfer than a windbag. I’ll take him over Huckabee any day.
November 20th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
How well can he communicate? I probably agree with most of his positions, but when I have seen him on TV he has not been very articulate.

Jason Chaffetz plans to sleep in his congressional office as an estimated 40 other congressmen already do. My respect goes to those lawmakers who don’t accept all the entitled perks of the job.

That is a really good article. I was reading the comments below, and there are some real idiots that think if you sleep in your congressional office, you must be racist. They also remarked that the people who do are all republicans. Gee, it couldn’t be simply because republicans want to save us, the taxpayers money could it? What morons. Someone did have a good idea however. They suggested congress build a dorm and illiminate the housing allowance for congressman. I thought it was a great idea.
Someone correct me if i’m wrong, but the number of congressman does NOT change with the census right? They only move districts around based on population. The only time there is an addition to the amount of congressman is if a new state is added, and with congressional approval?
November 20th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
#35, yes, sort of, but states must yhave at least 1 congressman. As well, there are congressman without voting rights, etc….
