  4. MWS Says:

Decent ad, except for 2 things::

    1. The still of Whitman looks horrible at 0:42.

    2. The opening refers to Romney as Whitman’s “mentor” which kind of diminishes her. Probably not the thing to do when she is running for governor of California.

  5. Doug Forrester Says:

#4, They should have said Romney was her “minder”, I think Scientology is more PC in California than Mormonism.

  6. Flip Dixon Says:

Shouldn’t McCain do an ad for Whitman? After all, he was the Republican who actually won California in 2008, crushing Romney by 42-34%.

  7. Heath Says:

That’s only because the race was over after Florida. If Mitt had won Florida he would have won the nomination. Mac won it fair and fair but that’s why he won California. And 42-34% is NOT a thrashing in a primary.

  8. DanL Says:

Flip, McCain lost the general. Everyone wants to forget about his lackluster campaign. McCain endorsement=kiss of death.

  9. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

#8, actually McCain has strong approval ratings, still today.

  10. Flip Dixon Says:

I don’t remember Romney giving up after Florida. He campaigned hard in California, and McCain beat him pretty easily.

McCain seems to think highly of Whitman, so he will probably end up endorsing her too. And that endorsement, combined with smaller effect of Romney’s, will probably propel her to the nomination.

  11. Jerald Says:

They say Romney mentored Meg because he was her mentor at Bain & Co.

Flip Dixon….got your Romney voodoo doll yet?

  12. Knickers in a twist. Says:

Hey flipper! MItt’s endorsement carrys more weight than that of Mac and cheese wiz’s. Too bad I’ve relocated from CA to UT. I’d vote for Meg in a microsecond.

  13. Knickers in a twist. Says:

So, how many votes did Huckabee get in CA?

    Thought so.

  14. marK Says:

    Flip,

Mitt is trying to help out his fellow party member, and all you can do is grouse?

  16. Knickers in a twist. Says:

Mark, yeup. Flipper is not thrilled that Mitt is emerging as the front runner and the de facto leader of the GOP. It’s hard for many to admit it. They hate him. Successful, great family, walking the walk he talks, and a well educated business man. I doubt they hate him because he’s (gasp!!) Mormon. That reason is so…yesterday.

I wish Meg well, and hope she can get CA under control in a short time. Arnold has ruined the state. The DNC controlled house and senate in CA have ruined it. It’s not a very good place to live anymore. It’s still our home, but we can’t afford to live there anymore. So we just ‘visit’ when we can.

  20. Flip Dixon Says:

#14, Mitt is obviously trying to help himself. If Whitman gets elected as governor of California, she can help deliver the state to him in 2012.

It is not a coincidence that Mitt is now “living” in a beachfront mansion in San Diego. Why, he’s virtually a Californian now!

He sees California as the state that will put him over the top, but he’s not fooling anybody. California saw through the flip-flopper in 2008, and they will see through him again.

  21. Dave Says:

Meg used to work for Mitt before she became CEO of EBay. She learned from the best. Last year she worked hard for Mitt and now he’s returning the favor. That’s what friends do.

  22. Brian Says:

Flip you are just spouting mindless drivel–sure sign of a hucknut. While Florida oobviously was the turning point for McCain, McCain got 42% of the vote to Romney’s 35%. Huckster got what, 11 or 12%?? But hey, Huck often got 10% or less of the vote so he did better in CA. than in many other states. Romney, if he runs, will easily take CA in the primary.

  23. Bags Says:

Lets see, Californians gave Romney 35% of the vote despite the fact that McCain was just about to wrap up the nomination. And they gave the Huckster 12! What does that tell you about their view of the Huckster??

Answer: that the Huckster is a big government tax increaser who was also incredibly corrupt (TOP 10 MOST CORRUPT POLITICIANS list by the independent Judicial Watch)and who wants to blur the disinction between religion and politicis by “amending the constitution to follow God’s law” (as announced by preacher Huckabee) and who has said he would refuse to enforce decisions by the SCOTUS if he fundamentally disagreed with it. Huckabee was shown to be mostly a regional candidate who the dems could tear apart with all of the stupid nonsense that comes out of that whole in his face.

  24. Martha Says:

    23. Bags, the Huck folks don’t want to be reminded of Huck’s Clinton tendencies.

  25. Flip Dixon Says:

Gee, I wasn’t aware that McCain had “wrapped up” the nomination after Florida. I guess that explains why Romney stayed in the race, actively campaigned in California, and predicted he would win the state.

The Rom-bots are entering the realm of pure fantasy here.

  26. Thunder Says:

Flip Dixon: When it comes to fantasy Land, you should know, your the top dog there.

  27. marK Says:

I am reminded of when the company I was working for gave each and every employee ten shares of stock worth $10 a share. That day at lunch I overheard another employee say, “They’re not fooling anybody. All they want to do is make people happy about working here.”

It was Abraham Lincoln who said, “If you look for the bad in people expecting to find it, you surely will.” If you are determined to find evil in someone, you will succeed.

One can choose either to look for the good in others, or one can choose to look for the bad. Your choice.

  28. MWS Says:

“One can choose either to look for the good in others, or one can choose to look for the bad. Your choice.”

Did you hear that, Martha? Knickers? Brian? Thunder?

McCain is the nominee unless he drops dead.

    Shattering but congrats to him.

It was over after Florida. Intrade had McCain at 80.

    ps RIP Jack Kemp.

  30. Martha Says:

MWS, yes, I heard it. I do tend to look for the bad in Palin and Huck – I freely admit my faults.

Now, what about you? You seem to have a lot to say about me, and I’m not running for anything.

  31. marK Says:

    MWS

It is good advice for us all. We often congratulate ourselves on our powers of discernment just because we have taken a dislike to someone. Elizabeth Bennet, in Pride and Prejudice said the following:

“And yet I meant to be uncommonly clever in taking so decided a dislike to him, without any reason. It is such a spur to one’s genius, such an opening for wit to have a dislike of that kind. One may be continually abusive without saying any thing just;”

  32. MWS Says:

    Martha,

“Now, what about you? You seem to have a lot to say about me, and I’m not running for anything.”

I think your admission in #30 showed courage and discernment.

  33. MWS Says:

    marK,

Good point. For my part, I just thought it fun to turn the admonition of a Rombot on the Rombots. But your point is well taken. (although I still wouldn’t trust Romney any further than I could throw him)

  34. Mitt's comb Says:

Damn, does that man have hair or what? I am one lucky comb.

  35. Martha Says:

    MWS,

Romney has never had ethical issues or questions, but both Palin and Huck have.

    Just sayin.

Operation K-9 sends patriotic packages to overseas troops
    http://www.blueridgenow.com/article/20090502/NEWS/905019945/1023?Title=A-patriotic-Operation-K-9-shipment-Flags-Across-America

Beth White, 46, a chemistry and earth environmental science teacher at West Henderson High School, started the ministry for service dogs last May to provide support for the 600 to 800 military dog teams on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, White and other supporters of American soldiers and the war dogs that protect them have sent 305 care packages to 128 military service dogs and 131 canine handlers.

A Memorial Day shipment to 14 K-9 teams is scheduled to leave May 11 for the Middle East. Boxes will be filled with snack food and other items soldiers appreciate. Boxes for their dogs: will include rope pulls, dog toys and bones, and canine cooling bandanas made by Tammy Shook, a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church, which sponsors Operation K-9.

A special addition to the May shipment will be 10 brightly colored American flags, hand-traced on poster board. Sophie Christiano, a senior at WHHS, helped color the flags. Office Max made the seals and the state flags that adorn each poster.

Each flag is filled with signatures from friends and family from across America who support Operation K-9.

Of special note, the flags include a message from Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, whose son recently left for active duty: “God Bless,” Palin wrote boldly on each flag. She was thankful to be included in this opportunity to express her gratitude and prayer for the military men and women, White says.

  38. Jerald Says:

#20…Flip buddy, you are gradually becoming the Race4 2012 clown.

It’s still America, we can live where we want, how long we want to in this country.

Obviously, Mitt’s not trying to “fool” anybody by spending part of his time in his house in California. But I’ll just make you mad by saying, “It’s his time and money, so what?” LOL

What, is Huckabee upset about it or something?

Anyway, wouldn’t it be just horrible if Meg were elected and she, Romney, and a bunch of other well-meaning people turned around the state of California?

But then again, Meg is not a “pure” social conservative (she has some positions that Huckabee & Friends don’t like), so you folks are ready to use that as a weapon against Mitt, am I right?

Go ahead ye ol’ pure social crusaders you, keep knocking that evil Mitt Romney…

Oh by the way, are you enjoying the Obama Administration?
It must be real fun looking forward to his Supreme Court Justice pick, aye?

  39. Alex Knepper Says:

    I love Meg Whitman!!

  40. Flip Dixon Says:

#38, I live in CA and plan on voting for Meg Whitman. I don’t judge her by some of her iffy friends like Romney.

  41. Matthew E. Miller Says:

    mark,

I love Pride and Prejudice and Jane Austen in general! I need to get around to reading Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

    Jerald,
Flip slams Huck too, she seems to be leaning toward other candidates like Pawlenty. In another thread this morning she’s written that Huck and Palin have electability issues that she thinks TPaw can exploit, so I think you’re barking up the wrong tree if you think she’s a huckanut like me.

BTW, I think TPaw has electability issues that Huck can exploit. I think Huck would destroy Tpaw in Iowa and elsewhere. IMO, as much as I like Tpaw and respect the guys who like him (Miller, Forrester, MWS and others), I still think Tpaw is dead in the water…I’m open to him though.

  43. Jerald Says:

    #40 Interesting….

  44. Jerald Says:

#42 Must have got confused along the way. Thanks for the heads up.

Huck does seem to own Iowa at this point. TPaw is okay. Do you think Huck would really go after him? Would it be a TPaw in the North vs. Huck in the South kind of thing?

  45. MWS Says:

For TPaw to be viable, he will have to show strength in Iowa. He will probably not be a contender in NH, esp. if Romney and another northeaster are running. Iowa borders MN, TPaw is a strong SoCon evangelical, so if he can’t finish top 2 in Iowa at least, he probably isn’t viable. Even if he finished 2nd in Iowa, he’d probably have to win MI to still be viable, assuming the same calender from ‘08. I don’t give him too much chance in NH and SC, but who knows……

  46. marK Says:

    Matthew,

Northanger Abbey is my second favorite of Austen’s novels. It is a very enjoyable read because it is the most LOL book of them all. She pokes some serious fun at the conventions of the Gothic Novel.

Persuasion is my third favorite. The only reason it isn’t my second is she wrote it while she was dying. She was unable to polish it as much as her other works. It is still a great story, one of her best.

P&P, NA, and P are the only novels of hers that I have read more than once. I wish you well with them.

  47. marK Says:

Flip.#40:“I live in CA and plan on voting for Meg Whitman. I don’t judge her by some of her iffy friends like Romney.”

Well, Flip, since Meg has worked very closely with Mitt Romney, I submit that she has a far better idea about his character than you.

  48. mac Says:

    44
    Jerald
When I wrote destroy, I meant that, IMO, Huck as the political “it” factor and Tpaw doesn’t. In terms of charisma, I put TPaw more in the Brownback or Tommy Thompson category, it just ain’t happening.

When you add to it that Huck now has name ID and organization that he didn’t have in 07-08, Tpaw is DOA in Iowa. I think Iowa is 1 Huck 2 Mitt 3 Palin 4 Tpaw.

IMP Tpaw is a GOP Mondale, MN and that’s all.

  49. mac Says:

    has the political “it” factor.

  50. MWS Says:

    mac,

“IMP Tpaw is a GOP Mondale”

Ouch. That’s a little harsh, don’t you think?

  51. Tommy Boy Says:

    Mac,

Mondale did win his party’s nomination in 1984, so I don’t think Pawlenty would really mind such a comparison, heh heh.

  52. mac Says:

    50
    MWS
Yeah, I’m harshin’ on Matthew’s boy.

    51
    Tommy Boy,
Yep, Mondale was like the Bill Buckner of politics, but at least he made the big leagues.

  53. Tommy Boy Says:

    Governor Signs House Bill
    Certificates for Stillborn Babies

Governor Sarah Palin today signed legislation authorizing birth certificates for stillbirths. House Bill 2, sponsored by Representative Carl Gatto, allows the Bureau of Vital Statistics to issue certificates for stillborn babies at the request of the parents. HB 2 passed the House 29-1, Senate 18-1.

“This is beautiful because this can surely help a grieving family after losing a child,” Governor Palin said. “I’m thankful that Alaska’s legislature recognizes how important a step like this is as Alaska embraces a culture of life and respects precious babies, including babies stillborn, but still loved by their families. Alaskans respect this sanctity of life and I appreciate Representative Gatto’s efforts.”

  54. OHIO JOE Says:

    Great news Tommy Boy!

  55. JayPe Says:

If Pawlenty was the nominee, I’d predict he’d win states like Texas & Oklahoma ahead of Minnesota.

  56. Tommy Boy Says:

    OJ,

Apparently 20 states had such laws prior to Palin signing it into the law in AK. These are the kind of incrementalist measures that pro-lifers can push to put the heat on liberals to oppose what would likely be extremely popular pieces of legislation and help redefine in the minds of moderate non-pro-lifers what it is that the movement stands for.

Stillborn laws entangled in abortion debate
    http://www.stateline.org/live/details/story?contentId=208701

Every year, some 35,000 women deliver babies who die just before or during birth. A number of parents say their grief over the tragic loss is made worse because most states simply issue death certificates, never recognizing the birth of their stillborn offspring….

In 2001, Arizona became the first state to enact a law giving parents the option of receiving a certificate of birth for a stillborn baby.

Largely through the efforts of Cacciatore’s grassroots organization — the MISS Foundation — 20 states now offer parents of stillborn babies the option of an official birth certificate — 19 by law and one, Georgia, by administrative policy. Of those states, Arizona, Indiana and Missouri also provide state income-tax deductions for the year of the stillbirth to help defray burial expenses. In the laws, the gestation period at which a fetal death is considered a stillbirth rather than a miscarriage varies among states, with some starting as early as 20 weeks.

This year, seven more states — Alaska, California, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island — are considering similar measures. Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) signed a stillbirth law May 8.

  57. Paulee Says:

And was the rumor true that Robocalls blanketed all of California stating Mitt did not believe in Christ? And Muscleman Gov. S…was all about John MCcain…I sure wish people would do their homework..Gov. Romney came in second to JM. He won’t claim the dirty tricks, Mitt that is, he is too much of a gentleman, but he still did the right thing and bowed out and backed JM, knowing the math did not work for him to win.You see he is a private sector businessman, been there done that. Knows how to balance red to black…With his money, with his risk…Never been there , then you are not aware of what it takes…P. Obama never did any risk taking, either…He has always had a job. It is easy to talk big when your private money is not on the line. The saying, “Put your money where your mouth is,” speaks volumes for the private sector…You think Mitt started out rich? His Dad was a good man and did a good job providing his son good education, religious values, good moral examples. So I say, Mitt was fortunate and became a great steward of his examples set by family. He has raised with Ann, a lovely family, and been a great provider…Let’s see, so far seems to me, Mitt has shown America how one can appreciate the American Dreams. Great parents, good education, marriage and family, great provider, great brains, a doer, turnaround skills, morally sound, and LOVES this AMERICA!!!

  58. Flip Dixon Says:

#57, I live in California and that rumor you’re trying to spread about the robocalls is 100% false.

Another example of a Rom-bot spreading lies to try to explain away their candidate’s loss.

  59. Knickers in a twist Says:

Yea flipper. It’s odd that someone with Mitt’s money might want to live somewhere warm, where his wife would have less of a physical hardship with MS. Or heaven forbid, he might want to live near some of his children. If I had the bucks, I’d be living in the same hood as he is. And it is really a BAD thing that Mitt actually paid for the building/remodeling of his house himself, and did not rely on shady folks who somehow got no bid contracts to build sports centers? Oh…. never mind. And if you want to talk self serving. Let’s not mention the Indiana speech your fav sparkly spoke at. That was NOT self serving? EVERY speech ANY candidate gives, every endorsement (Palin endorsed Perry), is for their own self serving good. And ifyou want to know why Mitt spends most of his time in SD, why not ask him. I’m quite sure he’d give you a good answers. For me? I could care less where he lives. And if he bought a home in every state in the Union, God bless him. He worked for it, and it’s HIS money.

  60. Knickers in a twist Says:

    MWS
I’ve found some good in Palin. She has nice hair. And Huck? He talks real good on that box in my house that I don’t watch much. (and don’t waste my valuable time watching him). Does not mean I would ever cast a vote for them. And I won’t. I find their political lives in stark contract with what they are trying to hide behind the curtains. I want the total package, not just a made in religionwood package.

    \

  61. Knickers in a twist Says:

You mean Palin was actually areound to sign something? Amazaing. And that was a no brainer. ANY gov would have signed it. Even the most liberal of liberals.

  62. GetReal Says:

I don’t know about any religion related robo-calls, but as a California voter I recieved a pair of robo-calls from the McCain campaign featuring former governor Pete Wilson claiming McCain was the only Republican candidate opposed to illegal immigration. I guess if you mean opposed to it being illegal that might have been true in a sense…but I think they probably successfully pulled the wool over some voters’ eyes.
