Bloggers to NRSC: Butt Out

The big guns of the conservative blogosphere have got a message for Senator John Cornyn (R-Tx) and the NRSC:

Dear Senator Cornyn,

We the undersigned believe that the National Republican Senatorial Committee should be committed to serving ALL the members of the Republican Party.

Additionally, the NRSC should be focused on defeating Democrats, not Republicans. Towards that end, we believe it was completely inappropriate for the NRSC to endorse a candidate in the Florida primary race.

Therefore, we request that both you and the NRSC alter your position on the Florida Senate race, maintain neutrality, and promise to spend no money directly or indirectly in that race.

Sincerely yours,

Whatever one thinks of the Florida U.S. Senate race, it shouldn’t be decided by the NRSC and by injecting the NRSC into a primary for an Open Seat, Senator Cornyn has created unnecessary friction within the Republican Party and has shown a disrespect for the Primary process of the people of Florida.

As Morrissey points out, a similar tactic is causing friction among New York Democrats even coming from the far more popular Obama White House.  Already Cornyn is having to dodge questions on Facebook and in blogger conference calls and has a brushfire of anomosity building up. Now would be a good time for a graceful retreat to neutrality.

This is great that the people are standing up to those clowns who are running the show. If Mr. Crist is the best candidate, fine, let him win the primary.

  2. Thunder Says:

Its hard not to disagree with this, what in the world Senator Cornyn thinking. Save the cash for when it really counts.

  3. Aron Goldman Says:

the NRSC should be focused on defeating Democrats

Cornyn and the NRSC, by pragmatically getting behind the strongest horse for the general from the get-go, irrespective of ideology, are demonstrating that they’re solely focused on defeating Democrats, and not necessarily concerned whether the candidate possesses sufficient conservative credentials to satisfy the party’s intolerant base.

  4. marK Says:

    Aron,

If a party doesn’t stand for anything, it stands for nothing.

“Come vote Republican. We don’t stand for anything.”

    You think that will sell?

  5. Jonathan Says:

The fact that this was necessary at all is sad. If Sen. Cornyn wanted to endorse Crist as an individual go ahead. The NRSC needs to get out of business of meddling in primaries. Are they afraid we Florida Republicans are going to make the “wrong” choice? If that is so, then tough s***. We actually have to live with our next Senator for 6 years, John Cornyn doesn’t.

In other Florida primary news, Huckabee and Jeb Jr. endorsed Rubio:

  6. Falz Says:

Aron (#3) that end very well with Lincoln Chaffe and Arlen Specter.

  7. Vincent Harris Says:

    Adam-

Senator Cornyn is not dodging anything, quite the contrary.

He spoke last week to Erick on the phone. He has also made his intentions and reasons known.

I would urge you to not come to judgements about the Senator and his reasoning, as he is in the business of electing Republican Senators. He came to a judgement call on who he supported, and where the above may disagree with his call is one thing, but he is not hiding from his decision.

  9. OHIO JOE Says:

“and not necessarily concerned whether the candidate possesses sufficient conservative credentials to satisfy the party’s intolerant base.” Then the so-called tolerant non-base should start voting in primary elections instead of staying home crying that the base is winning.

  10. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

    satisfy the party’s intolerant base.

    word.

  11. Matthew E. Miller Says:

I’ve been warming up to Huckabee considerably; his anti-establishment kick is right on the money. It puts him on the “right” side of disputes, more often than not, while separating himself from the Republican brand. The guy has a perfect political ear.

  12. Matthew E. Miller Says:

Unfortunately, I doubt Romney has the courage to endorse Rubio. He’s an establishment guy through and through and…well, quid pro quo. At least we’re going off the cliff quickly; more exciting that way.

  13. GetReal Says:

11 – Huckabee is often on the right side of disputes now that he’s out of power and the only interests he has to account to are his viewers. His record in office is another matter.

  14. MWS Says:

    Getreal,

“Huckabee is often on the right side of disputes now that he’s out of power and the only interests he has to account to are his viewers. His record in office is another matter.”

That’s an interesting comment- coming from a Romney supporter.

  15. Liz Says:

What are you talking, Romney is going to choose Rubio as his running mate. Especially if Cheney declines. (the young Cheney I mean)

  16. Matthew E. Miller Says:

    Liz,

Could be. But, he’s not going to be Romney’s running mate unless he becomes a Senator and he won’t become a Senator when Romney endorses Crist (or remains neutral). I know a lot of Romney supporters think the guy is infallible, but come on…admit that Romney- whatever his amazing traits as a politician, business, and Governor- is an establishment guy to his very core. Establishment types don’t endorse Rubio’s over Crist’s. I’d love to be surprised though.

  17. C_of_D Says:

    #16, Matthew,

Romney and Jeb Bush have sent their top fundraiser to Rubio. Her name is Ann H(something). Can’t recall the details of where I read this. Plus, given the way Crist helped sabotage Romney at the last minute in the primaries I doubt Mitt would endorse him.

  18. TheParty1984 Says:

Frankly I think we need to get the Hell over ourselves here. How about we worry about getting more than 50 seats in the Senate first then worry about how often those people will vote with us? These people are just stupid at least on this issue, would they rather have a “RINO” (Who oh yeah is voting with us MORE THAN THREE QUARTERS OF THE TIME) or a straight up Dem who will vote with us below 5% of the time? If you believe the latter, please dear God, shut up keep smiling and just push the GOP button on election day and let Cornyn and the people whose jobs it is to run the party actually run the party. Normally I wouldn’t rant like this but I’m sick of the stupidity I’ve been hearing about “RINOs” in our party over the last few months.

  19. marK Says:

I don’t understand, if it is bad for the NRSC to stick their noses into the race, why isn’t bad for Huckabee to stick his nose into the race?

This begs the question. If the NRSC had endorsed Rubio over Crist, would those screaming about “Washington Elites interfering in local politics” still be screaming?

  20. marK Says:

    #18,

Your point sounds good on the surface, logically even. The problem is, what exactly does the Republican Party stand for? You must stand for something, else you stand for nothing.

What would be the point of a party that stands for nothing? Who would want to vote for such a party?

“Vote Republican. Why? No good reason, just vote for us.”

How well do you think that will sell?

  21. Aron Goldman Says:

Want a GOP office in Utah? Best get your glove on Mitt
