Message from Sarah Palin

From her Facebook.

On this Independence Day, I am so very proud of all those who have chosen to serve our great nation and I honor their selflessness and the sacrifices of their families, too.

If I may, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the last 24 hours and share my thoughts with you.

First, I want to thank you for your support and hard work on the values we share. Those values led me to the decision my family and I made. Yesterday, my family and I announced a decision that is in Alaska’s best interest and it always feels good to do what is right. We have accomplished more during this one term than most governors do in two – and I am proud of the great team that helped to build these wonderful successes. Energy independence and national security, fiscal restraint, smaller government, and local control have been my priorities and will remain my priorities.

For months now, I have consulted with friends and family, and with the Lieutenant Governor, about what is best for our wonderful state. I even made a few administrative changes over that course in time in preparation for yesterday. We have accomplished so much and there’s much more to do, but my family and I determined after prayerful consideration that sacrificing my title helps Alaska most. And once I decided not to run for re-election, my decision was that much easier – I’ve never been one to waste time or resources. Those who know me know this is the right decision and obvious decision at that, including Senator John McCain. I thank him for his kind, insightful comments.

The response in the main stream media has been most predictable, ironic, and as always, detached from the lives of ordinary Americans who are sick of the “politics of personal destruction”. How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country. And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make. But every American understands what it takes to make a decision because it’s right for all, including your family.

I shared with you yesterday my heartfelt and candid reasons for this change; I’ve never thought I needed a title before one’s name to forge progress in America. I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint. I hope you will join me. Now is the time to rebuild and help our nation achieve greatness!

God bless you! And I look forward to making a difference – with you!

Sarah

Yeah, it TOTALLY sounds like she’s leaving politics, you guys.

  2. OHIO JOE Says:

Thank you Kristofer for that great post. While this is a sad time for us Palinites, I am proud of Mrs. Palin for what she accomplished and for what has done for her state and our country.

  3. Tommy Boy Says:

    Kristofer,

Did you get my reply to your e-mail? It’s probably worth putting it up as an addendum to this post.

  4. Kristofer Lorelli Says:

    #2, sad?

Dude, she is now freelance and can go after Obama.

  5. bob Says:

I am 98% sure now Sarah will run for POTUS. Before the resignation, I was only 95% convinced.

  6. OHIO JOE Says:

True Kristofer, as a private citizen, there is a lot that she can do to go after Mr. Obama so there is a silver lining in this, but it is still a little sad that she is out of politics or at least it appears this way.

  7. OHIO JOE Says:

How do you figure so, bob?

  8. bob Says:

#8 Think of Reagan and his 6 years in the wilderness before he became POTUS in 1980. Sarah is following the same path of the Gipper and will spend 40 months in the wilderness with the power of the Internet and the blogosphere bridging the difference in the ability to get their message out. Sarah has decided to reinvent the wheel to a landslide victory in 2012.

  9. bob Says:

#9 read the last paragraph carefully and digest its contents.

“I am looking AHEAD and how we can ADVANCE this country…”

  10. bob Says:

#10 NOT TO REINVENT THE WHEEL

  11. bob Says:

By the way Sarah’ Twitter account has gone up by 10000 members, Pam Pryor reports an uptick in SarahPAC contributions, and Team Sarah is reporting an increase in its membership, all happening after the resignation.

We have accomplished more during this one term than most governors do in two.

If that were actually true, Sarah, the clear consensus across the political spectrum wouldn’t be that you’re DOA for 2012.

I’d also be curious to know the names of the majority of two-term governors’ records of 8 years you assert are less impressive than your accomplishments over just 2.5 years in office.

She would not have dismissed Bill McAlister and replaced him with a spokesman who she felt was better able to handle the national media if she was through with politics.

This explains the timing of the recent hiring of David Murrow as communications director for the governor of Alaska.

For months now, I have consulted with friends and family, and with the Lieutenant Governor, about what is best for our wonderful state. I even made a few administrative changes over that course in time in preparation for yesterday.

And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.

While we patiently await you telling us the name of a governor who quit 2.5 years into their first term and proceeded to the presidency, perhaps you’d like some cheese with your whine, ma’am.

  14. SM Says:

Sarah is dissing the MSM but she is probably going to be a high paid correspondent for them pretty soon.

  15. mike Says:

She is done as a contender for 2012 – it will be Romney or Huckabee imo Pawlenty wont get the early win to keep him there until the end.

  16. JA Pruce Says:

Honest, bold, resolute, brave, authoritative, leadership. Reminiscent of when Ike resigned his command post at NATO to advance his vision in the Presidency. Sarah stepping down as Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard to go to bat for America in 2012 and passing the ball in Alaska.

  17. JA Pruce Says:

    Passing the ball to victory!

Palin keeps low-profile after surprise news
    http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hAw8YPlfCFbIfCZqqfGJO4t3g9xgD997SSR80

    Where is Sarah Palin?

A day after surprising even her closest friends by announcing she would step down as Alaska governor more than a year before her term was up, the controversial hockey mom was keeping a low profile. Her spokesman, David Murrow, said Palin told him she was flying to Juneau, the state capital, for the Fourth of July weekend, but he wasn’t sure what activities she planned to attend.

The governor didn’t show up at a 50th anniversary statehood celebration. She wasn’t in the Capitol’s office. And no one answered the door at the governor’s mansion.

The only sign of Palin came on the social networking site Twitter, where she indicated she was watching the Juneau Fourth of July parade: “Lots of celebration of Independence & Alaska’s 50th Anniversary of Statehood.” But not even the parade director knew she had attended, and only a few people spotted her on the sidelines.

That left mounting questions about her plans for the future shrouded in mystery. Will she lay the groundwork for a 2012 presidential bid? Will she find a high-profile place in the private sector, maybe on the speech circuit? Will she drop out of the limelight and focus on her five children?

Her constituents, for one, wanted to know, especially in Juneau, where she has struggled to win over residents.

“I think she owes it to Alaskans to tell us why,” said state Sen. Dennis Egan, D-Juneau, the son of Alaska’s first governor, Bill Egan.

In fact, the only peep out of Palin on Saturday came on the social networking site Twitter, where she told military families: “Most special July 4 shout-out to you! Spouses, kids, parents, families of troops – THANKS for supporting our true heroes.”

  19. lkv Says:

#13; Aron Goldman: Politico article says that she will probably earn a lot of money on speaking gigs if that’s the course she wants to take, saying she would never have to worry about money again.

That would make since she fired Bill Mcalister and hired David Murrow as press aide.

If this turns out to be true, how could people forgive her and accept her back as a serious Candidate for President. It would mean that money is more important that public service.

her supporters will be very disappointed and betrayed if this happened.

  20. Ray in KY Says:

JA Pruce- WTF is with you? “Stepping down as CIC of the Alaska National Guard” rivals Ike. Please, come one now. You are so far over the top.

I do see SP running after this announcement. I don’t see her chances improving after this move, but I see the likelihood of her running getting a lot larger now.

  21. Yeechang Lee Says:

Honest, bold, resolute, brave, authoritative, leadership. Reminiscent of when Ike resigned his command post at NATO to advance his vision in the Presidency.

This is a very, very, very wrong description of what Eisenhower did (and did not do). He fought a very active movement to draft him every step of the way. Eisenhower refused to enter the race until he’d won the New Hampshire primary as a write-in candidate (without his permission) in March 1952!

Aron Goldman, I LIKE YOU…a lot. You are a really good cause for conservative values without allthe right-wing nutjob crap. But PLEASE….lighten up on Sarah. She is the real deal.

Real deal what? What has she accomplished? Now, I am not trying to pile on Sarah, but my gosh, the way she is followed, you would think she walks on water. She is a 2 1/2 year Governor of a small population state with few accomplishments.

  25. MWS Says:

“We have accomplished more during this one term than most governors do in two – and I am proud of the great team that helped to build these wonderful successes. Energy independence and national security, fiscal restraint, smaller government, and local control have been my priorities and will remain my priorities.”

What do governors have to do with national security?

  26. MWS Says:

“Sarah stepping down as Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard to go to bat for America in 2012 and passing the ball in Alaska.”

I counted a mix of three metaphors in that one sentence. She “stepped down” so she could “go to bat” which involves “passing the ball.”

  27. MWS Says:

30 or so hours later, my sense is that Palin is going the celebrity route. If she thinks this sets her up in 2012, she badly miscalculated, and I can’t imagine she’d be that dumb. My initial thought that a scandal will be forthcoming is fading. I think she wants to be in charge of her own schedule, make as much money as she wants, and do the whole book tour lecture circuit gig. That would also be consistent with her coy references to the future.

  28. MWS Says:

    Alex,

“Yeah, it TOTALLY sounds like she’s leaving politics, you guys.”

If she’s staying in politics, she’s going the celebrity route. If this was meant to enhance her electoral prospects, she’s grossly miscalculated.

  29. TC Robinson Says:

Aron, you asked for the name of a 2.5 year Governor who later ascended to the Presidency….I give you one name, Theodore Roosevelt.

Did some research, and found that Teddy was only Governor for 729 days (prior to which he was Asst. Secretray of the Navy), then VP for 6 months before becoming President. And last time I checked, he’s on Mt. Rushmore.

Sarah Palin will have been Governor for 964 days when her term is up. Just sayin’.

  30. MVRed.com Says:

I love Palin, but this decision has eliminated any shot for her at winning the 2012 nomination. Maybe if she runs for Senate and does good work there, maybe just MAYBE she will have a chance 10-15 years out.

    Romney 2012.

  31. Aron Goldman Says:

Aron, you asked for the name of a 2.5 year Governor who later ascended to the Presidency

No, I did not. I asked for the name of a governor who quit 2.5 years into their first term and proceeded to the presidency. NY Gov TR was put on the ticket as McKinley’s VP in 1900 and only ascended to the presidency after McKinley’s assassination.

  32. MWS Says:

    TC,

The Vice Presidency was really a do nothing job then, except in Roosevelt’s case, when McKinley was assassinated. That’s the only reason he become President.

  33. Tommy Boy Says:

Sarah Palin not under FBI investigation, agency spokesman says
The former GOP vice presidential candidate’s surprise resignation as Alaska governor had set off speculation, including rumors of a pending federal corruption probe or charges.
    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-palin5-2009jul05,0,7018263.story

Despite rumors of a looming controversy after Palin’s surprise announcement Friday that she will leave office this month, some of them published in the blogosphere, the FBI’s Alaska spokesman said the bureau had no investigation into Palin for her activities as governor, as mayor or in any other capacity.

“There is absolutely no truth to those rumors, that we’re investigating her or getting ready to indict her,” Special Agent Eric Gonzalez said in a phone interview Saturday. “It’s just not true.”

Gonzalez added that there was “no wiggle room” in his comments that could exclude any kind of probe.

  34. Martha Says:

Is Romney a breath of fresh air, or what?

    Enough of all the drama.

  35. Liz Says:

Great, I knew her family was still a priority for her, she is a quality lady. God bless her for all the crap she went through, and it’s America’s loss, but her family’s gain. I woulda quit way before the Letterman thing. As soon as they started sniper fire in the direction of the kids, I woulda been out of there. Better late than never and I’m sure Todd will have no problem finding a job.

  36. Liz Says:

Martha, you said it and now that the choice for 2012 is down to Obama, Huckabee, Romney, and new faces, you’d think this would gel real nicely for this country. But you wait and see the kind of contorted arguments we’re going to get from a few of the hold-outs here….

  37. Liz Says:

At the rate of some half a million jobs lost per month, I think it will all become clear pretty shortly for much of America. That’s my best guess. Because my pain threshold is so low, I am already crystal clear on what needs to be done for this country. Matter-of-fact I am just finishing my first draft on a letter to A. Schwarzeneggar tenderly suggesting that he hire one of his newest, most talented residents to fix the California mess, and offer to pay off his La Jolla mortgage or maybe give him San Quentin in return for putting California back in service. And I’m suggesting he consider it real good before the recall petition fully takes flight there…

Besides her book deal, she could well make millions going back to where she started — on TV — and provide conservative women with a counterbalance to Oprah.

A Low Profile, Except Online, for a Governor as She Gets Ready to Leave Office
    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/05/us/05alaska.html?ref=politics&pagewanted=print

Last fall, The Hollywood Reporter reported that several television executives were preparing to approach Ms. Palin about a TV career and whether, for instance, she would be interested in a syndicated, and lucrative, talk show job. Ms. Palin has not had time to entertain any such offers, a close associate said, though she has retained the Washington lawyer Robert B. Barnett, who handled her book contract with HarperCollins Publishers.

John Coale, a Washington lawyer who helped set up Ms. Palin’s political action committee after the election, said she had spoken fondly about her stint in the late 1980s as a sports anchor at KTUU, the NBC affiliate in Anchorage. Asked if Ms. Palin would be reluctant about a high-profile national television spot, given the scrutiny that would come with it, he said, “Being in the media is different,” emphasizing the “in.”

“She might still get whacked, but nothing like she gets whacked now.”

“People have very mixed emotions about her decision. But they support her,” Sally Heath said. Asked if she thinks her daughter made the right choice by stepping down, Heath said: “I think she made the right decision. I do.”

Palin’s father said he was not surprised that speculation about his daughter’s resignation had turned dark and that rumors were swirling on the Internet that she is facing a possible criminal investigation.

“It’s new to me if that is true,” Chuck Heath said when asked about the assertions. “People are always saying something.”

  40. Liz Says:

You know, I’m glad Rush has a thing for Palin. It kind of knocks at his credibility and keeps him a bit subdued right now, and additionally keeps the lefties off the real trail for a while, since Rush and Palin in the same sentence drives them in to a rabid lather.

The real objective is getting competence and the right skill set in the White House ASAP. I’m all about that. Would love to see my country start to regain some color and strength. Don’t want to get ahead of actual events, now, I know. And I still don’t think USA is in the hemorrhage induced coma yet that appears to be heading our way, right down the DC pike. But I’m getting a deep yet faint possibility bubbling up inside, that the USA may get emergency treatment before the final death rattle if the stars can just align…..and by this medical analogy I am NOT alluding to the honorable Ron Paul….!…

  41. bob Says:

should could be leading people on, pretend she’s running to drive up book sales, and then after the book drops say shes not running.

  42. Heath Says:

It’s very easy for all the Palinites to make these wild claims that this is a great move and she is running for president.

If you have any honour you will declare now that if come July 4 2011 Sarah hasn’t announced her run for President or if she has abandoned any run or is at 5% or less you will PUBLICLY ADMIT YOU WERE WRONG AND APOLOGIZE.

I’ll do the same for Mittens.

Fair is fair, put up or shit up.

  43. lkv Says:

Palin is probably quiting politics all together and have something to do with Evangelical and Religious work. She just hired David Murrow who does PR work, writes books for Evangelical men ,makes Evangelical Movies, and gives Motivational lectures to Evangelicals.

She was talking about a higher source, and that she loves Alaska that is why she is resigning. It might be a business deal she’s going into with him, who knows.

David Murrow is the clue. Just hired him in the past 2 weeks, she said the decission to resign had been a long time in the making.

  44. American Ideals Says:

Ah, Sarah. Hypocrite, nutjob, and now quitter. She’s endlessly amusing.

  45. Michael Bindner Says:

The media were all out there yesterday. Today, it will likely be very,
very quiet in Wassilla. Next month she will realize that her 15 minutes
    are up.
