Rasmussen Reports: Cambridge Cop Controversy Survey
Results reveal stark divide along racial lines
    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/july_2009/26_say_obama_response_good_or_excellent_on_cambridge_cop_question

Twenty-six percent (26%) of voters nationwide say President Obama did a good or excellent job answering a press conference question about an incident involving a white Cambridge, Massachusetts policeman and a black Harvard professor. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 46% rate the president’s response as poor.

The president was asked about the arrest of a prominent African-America professor at Harvard and the professor’s subsequent complaint of racial profiling. While admitting he did not know all the details and acknowledging that the professor was a personal friend, the president said the police acted “stupidly” when they arrested Henry Louis Gates.

Beneath the top line numbers is a huge gap between the way that white and black Americans view the situation.

Seventy-one percent (71%) of African-Americans say the president’s response was good or excellent, a view shared by just 22% of white Americans.

At the other extreme, 53% of white voters gave the president’s response a poor grade. Only five percent (5%) of black Americans offered such a negative response.

Seventy-three percent (73%) of African-American voters believe that most blacks receive unfair treatment from the police. Just 21% of white voters share that view.

Thirty-two percent (32%) of black voters say that most policemen are racist, but 52% disagree.

Among white voters, just seven percent (7%) believe that most policemen are racist and 71% say they are not.

On a partisan basis, 50% of Democrats say the president’s response was good or excellent. White Democrats are less supportive than black Democrats. The president’s response earned a poor rating from 77% of Republicans and 52% of those not affiliated with either major party.

Liberals, by a two-to-one margin believe that most African-Americans are treated unfairly by the police. A solid plurality of unaffiliateds and a majority of Republicans disagree.

  2. Aron Goldman Says:

The bill is loaded with contraception funding which many pro-lifers believe adds to the promiscuity problems in America.

Are pro-lifers sincerely interested in reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies or not?

Are they that delusional to think abstinence education is actually effective?

    Rasmussen Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 29% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -11. That’s the first time his ratings have reached double digits in negative territory.

These updates are based upon nightly telephone interviews and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. Today is the first update based entirely upon interviews conducted after the President’s prime time televised press conference. The number who Strongly Approve of the President has remained unchanged since the press conference but the number who Strongly Disapprove has gone up by five percentage points (from 35% on Wednesday morning to 40% today).

The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve.

Overall, 49% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. Fifty percent (50%) disapprove. It is important to remember that the Rasmussen Reports job approval ratings are based upon a sample of likely voters. Some other firms base their approval ratings on samples of all adults. President Obama’s numbers are always several points higher in a poll of adults rather than likely voters. That’s because some of the President’s most enthusiastic supporters, such as young adults, are less likely to turn out to vote.

The President is now seen as politically liberal by 76%. That’s up six points from a month ago, 11 points since he was elected, and the highest total to date. Forty-eight percent (48%) now see him as Very Liberal, up 20 points since he was elected.

Hillary Clinton: Iran’s pursuit of nukes ‘futile’
    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0709/25426.html

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that Iran will never achieve its goal of obtaining a nuclear weapon, declaring to Tehran: “Your pursuit is futile.”

“What we want to do is to send a message to whoever is making these decisions, that if you’re pursuing nuclear weapons for the purpose of intimidating, of projecting your power, we’re not going to let that happen,” Clinton said.

“First, we’re going to do everything we can to prevent you from ever getting a nuclear weapon. But your pursuit is futile, because we will never let Iran — nuclear-armed, not nuclear-armed — it is something that we view with great concern, and that’s why we’re doing everything we can to prevent that from ever happening. … We believe, as a matter of policy, it is unacceptable for Iran to have nuclear weapons.”

“Are pro-lifers sincerely interested in reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies or not?”

Do fiscal conservatives now support using taxpayer dollars to promote social initiatives?

  6. OHIO JOE Says:

“Do fiscal conservatives now support using taxpayer dollars to promote social initiatives?” Yes they do, which is why they are not fiscally Conservative in reality; they just hide behind the banner of fiscal responsibility.

  7. Jack Says:

Isn’t the fact that ObamaCare is basically a national version of Mitt’s Massachusetts RomneyCare, a fiscal and provider debacle within MA, mean Mitt really can’t frontally attack Obama on the issue, as can Sarah Palin?

(It seems in looking back, Mitt made a bad bet on inaugurating his statewide health program in MA as a basis for his ‘08 POTUS run — which now, in view of the demise of ObamaCare, would seem to keep Mitt out of the running for ‘12 — or at the least seriously injure his prospects; especially compared to Palin who now must be seen as far ahead, despite the biased MSM polls coinciding with, and trying to damper, Palin’s breaking out party this weekend)

  9. GetReal Says:

7 – One big difference between Obama’s plan and Romney’s is that Obama’s includes a government or “public option” while Romney’s dealt exclusively with private insurance companies. Since private companies won’t be able to compete against a program for which profit is not a concern, in fact operating at a loss is not a concern, they will likely be driven out of business leaving us with only government health care. Pretty big difference from Romney’s plan, but I doubt they go into such detail on Conservatives4Palin. After all, it wouldn’t fit the one-sided, well-sheltered “echo-chamber” theme.

  10. Adam Graham Says:

    #2:

As I’ve stated before, more than balf of abortions are from women who’ve been using birth control before getting the abortion. I got news for you, if you think people can’t control themselves enough to avoid having sex before marriage, it’s folly to bet on them remembering to take a pill everyday or putting a piece of rubber over their private parts.

In addition, the bill includes funding for Planned Parenthood, the “lens crafters” of abortion.

  11. Aron Goldman Says:

“Do fiscal conservatives now support using taxpayer dollars to promote social initiatives?” Yes they do, which is why they are not fiscally Conservative in reality; they just hide behind the banner of fiscal responsibility.

Promoting safe sex and helping to prevent unwanted pregnancies significantly reduces the financial burden on American taxpayers and limits the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases.

To see it otherwise would be penny wise, pound foolish.

    From the proposed bill:

Almost half of all pregnancies are unintended and four-in-ten unintended pregnancies end in abortion. Policies in the bill that help prevent unintended pregnancy include:

    • Grants for Teen Pregnancy Prevention Comprehensive Education (encouraging teens to delay sexual activity and providing age appropriate, factually and medically accurate and complete contraceptive information for teens)

    • Grants for Home Visits by Trained Home Visitors for Low-Income Families (to include contraceptive counseling)

  12. Aron Goldman Says:

I got news for you, if you think people can’t control themselves enough to avoid having sex before marriage, it’s folly to bet on them remembering to take a pill everyday or putting a piece of rubber over their private parts.

I’ve got news for you. By age 44, NINETY-FIVE PERCENT (95%) of all Americans have had pre-marital sex.

    http://www.publichealthreports.org/userfiles/122_1/12_PHR122-1_73-78.pdf

    WHO USES CONTRACEPTIVES?

Virtually all women (98%) aged 15–44 who have ever had intercourse have used at least one contraceptive method.

Overall, 62% of the 62 million women aged 15–44 are currently using one.

Only 7% of women aged 15–44 are at risk of unwanted pregnancy but are not using contraceptives.

Among the 42 million fertile, sexually active women who do not want to become pregnant, 89% are practicing contraception.

    WHICH METHODS DO WOMEN USE?

    • 64% of reproductive-age women who practice contraception use reversible methods, such as oral contraceptives or condoms. The remaining women rely on female or male sterilization.

    • Contraceptive choices vary markedly with age. For women younger than 30, the pill is the leading method. By age 35, more women rely on sterilization.

    • The pill and female sterilization have been the two leading contraceptive methods overall in the United States since 1982. However, sterilization is the leading method among black women and Hispanic women, while the pill is the leading method for white women.

    • The pill is the method most widely used by women who are in their teens and 20s, never-married women and women with at least a college degree.

    • Poor and low-income women are more than twice as likely as higher income women to use the 3-month injectable.

    • 7.3 million women use barrier contraceptives, such as the male condom. Condom use is especially common among teens, 20–24-year-olds, childless women and never-married women.

    • 15% of contraceptive users rely on dual methods (most often the condom combined with another method). The proportions using more than one method are greatest among teenagers and never-married women.

    TEEN CONTRACEPTIVE USE

Teenagers (aged 15–19) who do not use a contraceptive at first sex are twice as likely to become teen mothers as are teenagers who use a method.

27% of teenage women using contraceptives choose condoms as their primary method. Condom use declines as women grow older and marry.

Of the 3.1 million teenage women who use contraceptives, 53% —- more than 1.5 million women -— rely on the pill.

45% of teenage women who practice contraception use condoms, either alone (19%) or with another method (25%).

    WHO PAYS FOR CONTRACEPTION?

    • One-quarter of the more than 20 million American women who obtain contraceptive services from a medical provider receive care from a publicly funded family planning clinic.

    • In 2001, 6.7 million women, including 1.9 million teenagers, received contraceptive services from publicly funded family planning clinics in the United States.

    • Federal employees are guaranteed insurance coverage for contraception.

    • 9 in 10 employer-based insurance plans cover a full range of prescription contraceptives, which is 3 times the proportion just a decade ago.

    • 26 states now have laws in place requiring insurers to provide contraceptive coverage if they cover other prescription drugs.

So you support dictating social policy using taxpayer funding?

  14. Adam Says:

See, the philosphoical disagreements between various stripes of Republicans (as demonstrated in the back and forth between Adam G and Aron) are exactly the reason why sticking with the “Too much, too fast, too uncertain and no way to pay for it” meme may be the preferable one for our side to push than splitting the GOP coalition on questions like abortion.

  15. Aron Goldman Says:

So you support dictating social policy using taxpayer funding?

No. Dictating social policy would be using taxpayer funds to mandate Implanon for all teenage girls.

  20. Doug Forrester Says:

Funding contraception to reduce abortions has a condescending tone to me.

It’s like having the government fund burkas for woman so men won’t rape them.

The problem with rape is that it’s a violation of a woman’s sacred body in a violent way. It’s condescending to suggest she is the source of the problem.

It’s condescending to suggest that an innocent human being is to blame for having a killer as a mother.

The problem is that people can easily justify killing human beings who aren’t like them. It is an offensive and incomplete answer, to just help the killers avoid the natural consequences of their actions so they won’t feel the need to kill.

The full answer is to protect all human beings from murder. As far as compromise goes the answer should be to take what we can and continuing pushing HARDER.

Those of us who respect the sacredness of human life should never let up on those who support killing others for personal convenience.

  21. OHIO JOE Says:

“It’s like having the government fund burkas for woman so men won’t rape them.” Shhhhhhhh, don’t give them any ideas.

  22. MacisBack08 Says:

The minimum wage hike sucks for me, a 20 yr old college student w/o a bachelors degree and only one paid job in my history (the two other “jobs” were unpaid internships).

  23. Liz Says:

I’d like to live in a community where the government is not allowed to talk anything sex to my children, and where the neighbor kids are taught abstinence. If the rest of you want the government dictating acceptable sexual practice, and you allow your children to roam like alley cats, I’m up a creek, ain’t I?
LUCKILY, all my family and close friends are solid believers and practitioners of NO premarital sex, and teachers of abstinence to their children, and examples of respect for the opposite sex. Personally, I really like it. The other 95% of America should give it a try.

  24. Liz Says:

Yea, and like that one poster said, if you can’t control your urges, you’re not likely to be disciplined to put pieces of rubber or little pills or whatever all they said. It’s kind of like the gun control argument, if you’re crazy or criminal like, you’re going to get one whether the government wants you too or not. It’s the decent people who pay when gun rights are restricted. When the government pushes or promotes sex, it’s the decent kids that suffer. The promiscuous kids just mock and ridicule the teachers and government employees standing there with the cucumber or whatever they do, then run out and show everyone how it’s really done.
